Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center say new research could offer hope for people with advanced prostate cancer.

They are not ready to call it a major breakthrough, but researchers say it is a possible new route for tackling treatment resistant prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in men.

Essentially, nearly all prostate cancers treated with hormone therapy become resistant over a period of months or years and the cancer makes what researchers call an ?unwelcome comeback.? The new data seems to show a way to target the substance that?s causing those cancer cells to grow.

Dr. Stephen Hammes says this is not a major breakthrough.

Dr. Hammes said, ?We?ll, it?s an important starting point for trying to understand how to treat prostate cancer.?

Dr. Stephen Hammes is both a medical doctor and has a Ph.D. in the field of endocrinology. He?s on the hunt for a way to attack those cancer cells that are resistant to hormone therapy.

Dr. Hammes said, ?Hormone therapy where you try to eliminate those hormones that allow prostate cancer cells to grow. And that works for a while but eventually that stops working. And then the cells grow even though there are no hormones around, they figure out a way to do it anyway.?

Dr. Hammes and fellow researcher Aritro Sen have discovered a possible culprit and a way to attack it. A protein in every cell that holds the cell together and allows it to interact with other cells, but when it invades the cell nucleus, it can play havoc with genes and DNA.

Dr. Hammes said, ?It goes into the nucleus of normal cells as well but it?s controlled. It goes in a controlled way. But in cancer, what happens is it happens in an uncontrolled way. So signals that are normally just enough to make cells grow but not out of control, in cancer they go out of control.?

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and can be cured with radiation or surgery. The hope is finding a new treatment to target cancers that are more aggressive.

Dr. Hammes said, ?We started looking at this molecule in a frog. And now we found out that it might be important in a cancer cell. And it just shows you how even the smallest project in the laboratory can have some meaning.?

They stress there?s a lot of things about cancer that they don?t understand, so they think they?ve found one small piece and can build on it. Researchers say this is a promising step forward, but don?t expect any new drug available in a clinical setting anytime soon.

tam-sense: exhaustion

For the past three days I have been trying to work myself into a state of exhausted numbness. I'm not sure if this is healthy, but I fear the alternative. If I sit, I think. When I think, I cry. I cry many times throughout the day anyway, and right now idleness feels like a dangerous way to sink into a deep self-pitying depression. I am hurting, and the exhaustion of constant physical activity feels good.

My sister and brother-in-law will be moving in with us in a couple of weeks (for about a year, while they go back to school), and I have been busy turning my basement craft room into a bedroom for them, and turning the main floor guest room into a combination office/guest/craft room. I am taking advantage of this transition to finally unpack some boxes that have been sitting in the basement, untouched, since we moved in three years ago. Kevin was a little dismayed to realize that I didn't intend to simply move boxes from one area of the house to another, but that instead I was embarking on a grief-fueled total re-organization of our house. I have sifted through dozens of boxes of old school notebooks, photographs, craft supplies, papers (oh, the paper!), and random miscellany. I have gathered about a carload's worth of stuff to either sell or donate, and I have collected at least six paper bags worth of paper to be recycled.

Between all of Kevin's business school papers that he decided he no longer needs (after having never looked at them in the five years since graduating), and all of the papers I've saved from my ten years of on-and-off undergraduate work, there was a lot of paper to sift through. One of the funnier moments of the night came when Kevin realized that I had an entire box full of half-used notebooks that I have been saving (and carting around with me from home to home) since my first round of college at UC Davis in the early 2000's. I was raised by a man who saved every scrap of scratch paper, used every pencil until it was an ungraspable nub, and was known to unwrap gifts very slowly in an effort to save the wrapping paper for later re-use. Throwing away notebooks with clean pages feels wrong. So, Kevin and I spent a not insignificant amount of time tonight going through each notebook, tearing out the clean pages, and transferring them to binders. Our efforts were fruitful - we ended up with nine 1-inch binders full of clean notebook paper! That should last us the next ten years at least.

A few noteworthy things I came across during the basement unpacking and organization:

1. Endless note cards, greeting cards, handwritten notes, and little scraps of paper with sweet notes from Kevin and friends and family, that I have saved in the years between high school and the present. 2. Many old journals of mine that are written in such a melodramatic way that I couldn't read most of it without cringing. There was one lovely entry, however, from December of 2003, when we had been dating for four months, in which I wrote about falling in love with Kevin. 3. A few "things to do before I am (enter an age here)" lists. It was satisfying to see that I'd accomplished a number of the items on these lists. There were also items that I no longer have any intention of every accomplishing, and items which are now on my "Before 30" and "Before 35" lists. 4. Many love notes written to Kevin, or from Kevin, from our early dating days, our engagement years, and the early marriage years. I'm so glad I've saved these notes. A particular favorite is a note from Kevin with an Einstein quote that reads, "Exhausted from a silence long/This is to show you clear how strong/The thoughts of you will always sit/Up in my brains little attic," with a funny little drawing of Einstein. The most difficult note to read was a rough draft of my wedding vows to Kevin. Most of it was fine, but when I got to the line, "I promise you summertime baseball games, fall walks, and babies," it felt like I'd had the wind knocked out of me. I've delivered on the first two parts of that vow (many summertime days have been spent rooting for the Giants, A's, and Twins, and there have been lots of fall walks), but the last part - ouch. What a promise.

5. Of course, old photographs dating back to my seventh-grade trip to Washington DC and New York City. A trip where I spent an entire roll of film on headstones in Arlington Cemetery, and during which I got lost in Manhattan and had to be rescued at a Sbarro's by one of the teachers on the trip. Majorly embarrassing, and I think it took a couple of weeks off my mother's life to get that phone call.

6. The worst photograph ever taken of me. It's so bad that I don't have the guts to show it to you on this blog. Some day. Maybe. If you were a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis about four years ago, you might have seen said photograph. Please know that is not what I really look like.

I am so thankful to have a reason to stay busy, though I know that exhaustion and lack of sleep will eventually catch up with me. Also, I am running out of boxes to sort through. Anyone have a basement that needs organizing?

Fruit Tea Smoothie Recipe (with Pure Leaf Tea) ~ Lille Punkin'

I drink lots of iced tea during the summer, but I often don't have time to brew it myself. ?I also like to keep some packaged tea cold and ready to drink in the fridge. ?I don't, however, like tea that tastes too processed or that has compromised genuine flavor for sugar. ?I recently sampled Lipton's Pure Leaf tea; it was the first time trying this new variety. ?I really enjoyed the unsweetened variety, and I was able to use the sweetened varieties in some fun new recipes.

Here is my fave, a version of the fruit smoothie!

FRUIT-TEA SMOOTHIES?
Servings: 4?
Prep Time: 10 minutes?

• 16 ounces Pure Leaf Iced Tea with Lemon or Pure Leaf Unsweetened Iced Tea
• Chilled 2 cups frozen strawberries?
• 1 cup fat free vanilla ice cream?
• 1 tablespoon sugar?

In blender, process all ingredients until smooth. Serve immediately in tall glasses and garnish, if desired, with fresh strawberries.

My store didn't carry the fat-free ice cream, so I used light. ?We also did this recipe with the Lemon sweetened tea. ?It came out deliciously, and the kids could taste the tea, but didn't know exactly what it was. ?They gobbled it up!

This 11-minute animation depicts key events of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, which will launch in late 2011 and land a rover, Curiosity, on Mars in August 2012.

The?Curiosity rover, also called the Mars Science Laboratory, was launched in late November 2011, and is expected to land on Mars on the night of Aug. 5 PDT (early Aug. 6 EDT). The $2.5 billion rover will touch down at Gale Crater, and is designed to search for clues that Mars could be now, or in the ancient past, a habitable planet for microbial life.

NASA first set its sights on landing on the Red Planet in the 1970s. The agency achieved its first Mars landing in 1976 with the Viking 1 lander. Since then, the agency has had six spacecraft successfully?touch down on the Martian surface. But with the impending arrival of Curiosity, NASA will showcase the most sophisticated Martian rover yet.

"The Curiosity landing is the hardest NASA robotic mission ever attempted in the history of?exploration of Mars, or any of our robot exploration," John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said in a news briefing Monday (July 16) at the agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Bigger and better

For starters, the way Curiosity will lower itself to the surface of Mars in less than 20 days is unprecedented. The rover will use a new and complex sky crane system to slow its descent.

According to Doug McCuistion, director of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters, Curiosity's landing "could arguably be the most important event ? most significant event ? in the history of planetary exploration." [How Curiosity's Nail-Biting Landing Works (Pictures)]

Previous Mars rovers, such as the twin Spirit and Opportunity rovers (collectively known as the?Mars Exploration Rovers), used airbags to cushion their landing. Spirit and Opportunity arrived at the Red Planet about three weeks apart in January 2004. Each rover weighs about 384 pounds (174 kilograms), but since Curiosity tips the scales at 1 ton, it was deemed too heavy and too large for an airbag-assisted landing.

"The mass of Spirit and Opportunity was just about at the limit for what that airbag design could handle," McCuistion said.

Spirit and Opportunity were designed for three-month missions on Mars, but both far outlived their warranties. After getting stuck in Martian sand and losing contact with Earth, Spirit was officially declared dead in May 2011. But,?Opportunity is still alive and well, and is currently exploring a massive crater, called Endeavour. Since it landed on the Red Planet, Opportunity has logged an impressive 21.4 miles (34.4 km).

Qualcomm axes its own Mirasol production, will only bring some devices to market itself

Talk about flying under the radar. While everyone's focus on Qualcomm's results last week centered on the mobile chip business going gangbusters, the company quietly revealed during its fiscal results call that it's backing out of producing Mirasol displays itself. CEO Paul Jacobs instead wants the company licensing out the butterfly-inspired screens to interested companies and will limit its direct commercialization to "certain" devices. The company isn't explaining why beyond the plan more closely matching "addressable opportunities," although the absence of any widescale launches (and unconfirmed but repeated talk of low yields at The Digital Reader) suggests that factory output never quite reached critical mass. We're hoping that someone picks up the color e-reader torch before too long and delivers more than just the reference model derivatives we've seen to date.
