Bad Weather Leads to Chats with Family, Close Friends

When the weather outside is frightful, we spend more time shooting the breeze with people close to us, a new study finds.

The study, published Wednesday (Oct. 10) in the journal PLoS ONE, found that during what the study authors called "uncomfortable" weather ? be it hot, humid, wet or cold ? people tend to have longer phone conversations, but with a smaller circle of people than usual, including close friends and family.

"We found that during uncomfortable weather, our 'ringing anyone' behavior declined, talking on the phone for longer to our close friends and family more than our wider network," co-author Santi Phithakkitnukoon, a researcher at England's Newcastle University, said in a statement.

The researchers analyzed anonymous records of 1.3 million mobile phone users in Portugal, gauging the length of phone calls and how often people called each other back. This allowed them to distinguish between "weak" and "strong" social ties.

A second study by Phithakkitnukoon and colleagues published in PLoS ONE on June 28 found that people tend to travel to places relatively close to their friends and family; about 80 percent of locations people visit are within 12 miles (20 kilometers) of these strong ties. In densely populated areas, this distance fell to just 4 miles (7 km).

"If we can use this information to build up a picture of people's movements ? the places they visit, their daily travel patterns ? then we can use this information to help shape our cities and transport systems of the future," Phithakkitnukoon said in a statement.

It's unclear why bad weather leads to longer chats with close friends and family. Perhaps the uncomfortable weather leads to feelings of isolation, which people try to overcome by talking to those close to them, the researchers suggest. Or, they said, maybe bad weather makes real-world interaction more difficult or less desirable, leaving more time and desire to talk on the phone.

Jordan king swears in government to prepare elections

AMMAN (Reuters) - King Abdullah swore in a new government on Thursday charged with preparing for Jordan's first parliamentary election since the Arab Spring.

The new prime minister, Abdullah Ensour, said his main task was to restore public confidence in an election process long marred by accusations of meddling by the authorities and the powerful security forces.

"The main challenge is holding free and fair elections," said Ensour, 73, who has held a string of senior ministerial posts in more than two decades in public office.

However, Jordan's only effective political opposition, the Islamic Action Front (IAF), have already said they will boycott the poll because nothing has been done to rectify an electoral system that is skewed against them.

Ensour was appointed by the king on Wednesday to replace Fayez al-Tarawneh, a week after parliament was dissolved halfway through its four-year term. An election must be held within four months.

Foreign Minister Nasser Joudeh and Finance Minister Suleiman al-Hafez, who negotiated a $2 billion loan from the IMF, kept their posts in a smaller, 21-member cabinet dominated by conservative politicians who held sway in previous governments.

Most of the cabinet are drawn from tribal areas inhabited by the native Jordanians who are the backbone of the army and security forces, and could lose out from any wider democratic reforms.

Only three ministers including Joudeh come from the Palestinian community making up the majority of Jordan's 7 million population, who are under-represented in government and parliament but dominate the business elite.

ISLAMIST HOPES THWARTED

Ensour's pledge of transparent voting appears designed to reassure members of less influential Jordanian tribes that they will get fair representation, unimpeded by official meddling.

Officials say they hope the election will pave the way for a prime minister to emerge from a majority bloc in parliament, rather than be handpicked by the king.

But it will do nothing to fulfill Islamist hopes that the pro-democracy groundswell of the Arab Spring would prompt Jordan to rebalance its electoral system and give fairer representation to its citizens of Palestinian origin.

Sparsely populated rural constituencies where pro-government tribes are strong get a bigger weighting in parliament than the Palestinian-dominated poor urban constituencies where the Islamists find their support. Wealthier Palestinians with economic power tend not to vote at all.

Some analysts say a parliament without the Islamists could make life easier for the government in the short term, but risks storing up more resentment among citizens of Palestinian origin.

Ensour urged the IAF, the political arm of Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood, to drop their boycott, saying their opposition would be more effective inside the assembly and denying that the authorities were bent on undermining them.

"We don't want to exclude the Islamist movement and we are extending our hands to them. They are an important element of democratic life in Jordan."

He said voter registration could be extended beyond Monday's deadline if the Islamists indicated they were prepared to take part.

Giant panda cub died of liver necrosis, Washington zoo says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The giant panda cub that died at the National Zoo in Washington last month succumbed to liver disease caused by inadequately formed lungs, officials said on Thursday, releasing findings they hope will help them learn more about breeding the endangered black and white bears.

The cub, born on September 16, died when it was six days old in an agonizing blow to wildlife conservation efforts.

Veterinarian Suzan Murray of the National Zoo said officials were unsure why the cub's lungs failed to form properly, but said the scientific community hopes to learn more about the causes of death in giant panda cubs.

Murray said the cub's mother, Mei Xiang, who gave birth after years of failed efforts at conception, at age 14 could be nearing the end of her cub-bearing years. But Murray did not write off the possibility Mei Xiang could again give birth.

"We're hopeful that she would be able to again in the future," she said at a news conference.

The cub was never given a name, in line with a Chinese tradition that pandas are not named for 100 days. The arrival was cause for celebration among zoo officials and wildlife conservationists around the world given the daunting odds for the endangered species reproducing in captivity.

Fewer than 1,600 giant pandas are known to exist in the wild in China, and about 300 live in zoos and wildlife centers around the world. Breeding is a critical challenge. One in five cubs born in captivity die in their first year of life, the National Zoo said on its website.

The cub's death on September 23 was discovered after panda keepers and zoo volunteers heard a distress sound from Mei Xiang. The zoo's staff failed to revive the cub with lifesaving measures, including CPR.

Since then, zoo officials have been closely monitoring Mei Xiang, who spent a couple of weeks cradling a rubber toy as if it were a cub.

Don Moore, an animal behaviorist at the National Zoo, said the mother had recently set aside the toy and her behavior was slowly returning to normal. He said she was still down about 20 pounds (9 kilograms) from her usual 240 pound (109 kg) weight.

He said the zoo had received a flood of support for Mei Xiang.

"We did get a lot of cards and letters and even stuffed animals," he said.

(AP) ? Turkish jets on Wednesday forced a Syrian passenger plane to land at Ankara airport on suspicion that it may be carrying weapons, Turkey's foreign minister said, amid heightened tensions between Turkey and Syria that have sparked fears of a wider regional conflict.

A Syrian Air Airbus A320 coming from Moscow was intercepted by F16 jets as it entered Turkish airspace and escorted to the capital's Esenboga Airport, the state-run TRT television reported.

"There are civil aviation rules, planes are required to make clear statements (concerning their cargo)," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in an interview with Turkey's TGRT television from Athens. The interview was also shown on TRT. "We received information that it was carrying certain equipment in breach of civil aviation rules."

"Should the information (received by authorities) turns out to be true, then whatever is required by international law will be done," he added.

The head of Turkey's civil aviation agency Bilal Eksi said there were 37 passengers and crew on board the plane. According to Moscow's Vnukovo airport, flight RB442 left for Damascus at 3:26 p.m. Moscow time (1126 GMT). It wasn't immediately clear whether this was the plane that was intercepted.

Davutoglu said the passengers were being treated "hospitably" and given meals while the plane's cargo was being inspected.

Officials in the Syrian information and foreign ministries could not immediately be reached for comment.

Davutoglu also said Turkish authorities had declared Syria's airspace to be unsafe and were stopping Turkish aircraft from flying over the civil war-torn country.

The move comes as tensions Turkey and Syria are running high. The countries, which were once close allies, have been exchanging artillery fire across the volatile border for days.

Earlier Wednesday, Turkey's military chief vowed to respond with more force to any further shelling from Syria, keeping up the pressure on its southern neighbor a day after NATO said it stood ready to defend Turkey.

Gen. Necdet Ozel was inspecting troops who have been put on alert along the 910-kilometer (566-mile) border after shelling from Syria killed five civilians in a Turkish border town last week. Turkey has reinforced the border with artillery guns and also deployed more fighter jets to an air base close to the border region.

"We responded and if (the shelling) continues, we will respond with more force," the private Dogan news agency quoted Ozel as saying during a visit to the town of Akcakale.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday that Washington has sent military troops to the Jordan-Syria border to help build a headquarters in Jordan and bolster that country's military capabilities in the event that violence escalates along its border with Syria.

The revelation raises the possibility of an escalation in the U.S. military involvement in the conflict, even as Washington pushes back on any suggestion of a direct intervention in Syria.

In Syria's largest city, Aleppo, regime troops and rebel fighters exchanged fire for several hours in and near the historic 13th century Ummayyad Mosque, said local activist Mohammed Saeed.

Saeed said rebels were trying to drive out regime troops holed up in the downtown place of worship. He said that by nightfall the shooting had stopped. The mosque is one of the landmarks of Aleppo, along with its medieval covered market, or souk, which was largely gutted last month in a huge fire sparked by the fighting.

Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said local activists told him fighting was restricted to the area near the mosque, but that no fighters entered the site itself. The Observatory relies on reports from a network of activists in Syria.

Aleppo has been the scene of intense fighting, particularly since rebels launched a new offensive two weeks ago to try to dislodge regime troops. The fighting has devastated large areas of the city of 3 million, Syria's former business capital.

Earlier, Syrian activists also said the rebel units of the Free Syrian Army took control of Maaret al-Numan, a strategic city along the main highway in Idlib province that connects the central city of Homs with northern city of Aleppo and the capital Damascus.

Abdul-Rahman said the rebels took control of the city late Tuesday. He said the rebels control the western entry into the city while the military is massing troops along the eastern outskirts for a possible counter offensive.

Fadi Yassin, an activist in Maarat al-Numan, told The Associated Press on Skype that rebels are in control of the town, although fierce fighting continued around the military barracks in the eastern part on Wednesday, three days after the FSA launched a "liberation battle," he added.

"The city has been liberated," Yassin said of Maarat al-Numan in Idlib province. "All liberation battles start with small cities and then moves on to the major cities."??

Holding on to Maaret al-Numan would be a significant achievement for the rebels, enabling them to cut the army's main supply route to two battered cities of Aleppo and Homs, both of which came under bombardment from the regime's helicopters and artillery on Wednesday, according to activists.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported fighting between Syrian rebels and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime around the Syrian town of Azmarin, in Idlib province, across from the Turkish border. It said Syrians were fleeing homes in the Azmarin region, some crossing into Turkey on rowing boats?over the river Orontes, that runs along the border.

Footage from Anadolu showed women, children and elderly men being taken across the river from Syria to Turkey on makeshift rafts and boats.

Private NTV television reported that explosions and automatic weapon fire could be heard in Turkey's Hatay province, coming from Azmarin. It said rebels were clashing with some 500 Syrian government soldiers, and that at least 100 rebels had been injured, some of whom had been brought to Turkey for treatment.

Some 99,000 Syrians, mostly women and children, have sought refuge in Turkey since the start of the conflict.

Also on Wednesday, state-run news agency SANA said President Bashar Assad appointed Sattam Jadaan al-Dandah as Syria's new ambassador to Iraq. The report did not say when al-Dandah will travel to Baghdad. His predecessor, Nawaf Fares, defected in July to become the most senior diplomat to abandon Assad's regime during a bloody 18-month uprising that has gradually become a bloody civil war.

Meanwhile, the U.N. envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday on the first stop of his diplomatic tour of the Middle East. His spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said Brahimi would "hold wide-ranging talks on the prolonged crisis in Syria."

The Top 3 Most Misunderstood and Over Used "Health Foods" in ...

?

I was so excited when Ryan asked that I do a guest post on his blog! After the excitement wore off, the reality hit me???what on Earth are you going to write about, Liz?? I have no shame in saying I pondered over that question for quite some?time. When I finally decided on my topic, the ideas just flowed, but?I was able to condense down the most annoying foods?on the market to me to these three things (broad things.. I do admit). Check it out!

1) Soy based ANYTHING

How soy became a ?health food? is beyond me.. Americans always go to extremes! Bigger houses, bigger cars, ?O,?you say soy is healthy? Let?s add it in EVERYTHING!? Back in the day, Japanese culture used FERMENATED SOY?often and yes it was a healthful food. HOWEVER, most soy found in the USA today is GM (genetically modified?in case you didn?t know- which is a bad thing? think lab with chemicals..) and even MORE is unfermenated?which means it hasn?t had all the anti-nutrients removed from it. Soy has an inherint ability to strip the body?of minerals. It can lead to thyroid dysfunction, hormone?disturbances, cardiovascular problems. But the food ol??USA keeps pumping it out into over 6000 packaged foods and even promoting that it is good for you.

Everyone has heard of Herbalife, Body By Vi, Reliv weight loss sca.., products. ALL soy based. They will tell?you how it is isoflavone free or non-GMO (which are good things)..but just take a second and google ?soy a health?food?? or ?Body by vi side effects?.. and call me in the morning.Do some research people.. don?t just listen to me?and DO NOT just listen to some person on a video telling you why you should take something that you have no?knowledge on..which means don?t just take my word for it either! RESEARCH.

Another point about soy that it is CHEAP. Cheap to grow, cheap to buy? so when you are paying for products that?are soy based..really LOOK at what you are buying. There is a reason that packaged product is 2.00 instead of?the 6.00 WHOLE food that you SHOULD be buying. You put in cheap gas, expect car trouble down the road.It isn?t rocket science?.or maybe I AM a smart blonde.

2) Canola Oil

WHAT IS THIS STUFF? If you can tell me what ?canola oil? is I will give you $5.00 bucks. Do you really know??Let me help you, It?s an oil made out of canola, right? Ha ha? nice answer. In reality, Canola oil is a hybrid of rapeseed oil?which if you don?t know what that is, it?s an oil that contains high levels of erucic acid?which is poisonous to the body. Alter that version and you get canola oil? i.e. Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed Oil. Most?often GM (there?s those initials again..) and chemically treated to actually remove the oil and then treated AGAIN?with more chemicals to make the color ?pretty? and make it NOT smell like big foot?s butt? not to mention the?pesticides used during growth.. Geez?this is making me so hungry?

Does this sound healthy to you? One Chemical process after another? No wonder our bodies are in chaos..

Good bet? Stick to something REAL. So hard to find something real in the world today.. but I am going to say it..?AHA (American Heart Assocation) be damned- Get some real butter, use a touch like intended and go on!

Better Bet?

Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Find one that has no other ingredient than Olive oil i.e. LOOK AT THE LABEL?and expresses that the oil was ?cold-pressed?. Be wary of oils that say ?made from refined olive oil? or?things of the sort? that just equals lesser?quality?oils chemically altered to be something they are not.

3) Sugar free/fat free baked or processed cakes/cookies

?
Talk about wolves in sheeps clothing??Watching your sugars? Check this out! We have this and that, it?s sugar free!?Sound to good to be true? It usually is.

One thing you have to learn to look at is a NUTRITION LABEL? and don?t just focus on calories.?If a product is sugar free? it is usually loaded with fat or sodium OR stomach trouble inducing sugar alcohol.?Sugar alcohol on it?s own isn?t that bad of a thing? but eat large quanities of it and watch out? you will?be running to the restroom too often for comfort.?If a product is fat free? it is usually loaded with sugar or sodium.. or tastes like cardboard.

If you want a treat, there is nothing wrong with it OCCASIONALLY but you will do better to learn to make something?yourself, while reducing the refined sugars in your daily diet through better choices.

The American public needs to stop expecting someone to spoon feed them proper nutrition.?STOP trying to take shortcuts and start taking responsibility for OUR health.?We ALL want an easy road.. we all want everything to be EASY. But LIFE ain?t easy and?if every person doesn?t start taking responsibility for their actions, whether that be not shoving down an entire pizza?OR not letting your children eat processed crap at every meal; the obesity rates could climb just like?Ryan outlined for you in this post:

Netflix CEO to step down from Microsoft's board

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma)

(AP) ? Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is leaving Microsoft's board of directors next month, giving him more time to focus on the myriad of challenges facing Netflix's video subscription service.

The departure announced Tuesday comes 5 1/2 years after Hastings joined Microsoft's board.

Hastings' connection with the world's largest software maker proved fruitful for Netflix Inc.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console became one of the first Internet-connected devices that could be plugged into a television set so selections from Netflix's library of movies and old TV series could be streamed into subscribers' households. Analysts credit the Xbox and other video game consoles for helping Netflix attract millions more subscribers during the past four years.

"Reed has been a terrific board member, and his insights and experience have really helped guide us through a critical period of transformation for both Microsoft and the industry," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement.

When Hastings steps down from the board at Microsoft's annual meeting on Nov. 28, the company will appoint a new lead independent director. Hastings has filled that role since December 2010. The position requires coordinating meetings with other board members with no direct ties to Microsoft and steering communications with major shareholders.

Microsoft Corp. paid Hastings $265,000 in cash and stock during the company's past fiscal year, which ended in June, according to documents filed Tuesday.

Hastings, 51, also owns about 226,000 shares of Microsoft stock currently worth $6.6 million.

The decision to quit Microsoft's board appears to be driven by Hastings' desire to restore Netflix's luster on Wall Street. The Los Gatos, Calif., video company's stock closed Tuesday at $65.53, more than 75 percent below its peak of nearly $305 more than a year ago.

In a statement, Hastings said he wants to devote time to Netflix and his long-running efforts to create better schools in California. He remains on the boards of Netflix and online social networking leader Facebook Inc., which he joined last year.

A backlash followed Hastings' abrupt decision last summer to start charging separately for the company's DVD-by-mail plan and the service that streams video through the Xbox and a variety of other Internet-connected devices. The change resulted in a price increase of as much as 60 percent for Netflix subscribers who wanted to keep getting both DVDs and Internet video from the company.

Hordes of subscribers lambasted Hastings and Netflix, resulting in mass cancellations that alarmed investors. Although the furor over the price increase has diminished, investors remain worried about Netflix's dwindling profits as it shoulders rising costs for online video licensing fees and an international expansion. Intensifying competition from Amazon.com Inc. and other companies offering various ways to stream Internet video also are dragging down Netflix's stock.

Analysts have periodically wondered whether Microsoft might be interested in launching its own video service on the Xbox in an attempt to become a more influential force in living rooms. Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash., also could tie a video service to smartphones and tablets running on its Windows operating system.
