GOP Governors Resist Implementing Obama's Health Care Law Despite Supreme Court Ruling

WASHINGTON -- Just because the Supreme Court affirmed that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land, doesn't mean that Republican governors are rushing to follow it.

"We're not going to start implementing Obamacare. We're committed to working to elect Governor Romney to repeal Obamacare," said Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) Friday morning on a call with reporters hosted by the Republican National Committee.

The Affordable Care Act requires states to set up health care benefits exchanges to help Americans buy insurance. If a state fails to act, the federal government will operate that state's exchange program.

States have until Jan. 1, 2013, to demonstrate to the Department of Health and Human Services that it has a plan in place for the exchanges, which are required to be up and running by Jan. 1, 2014.

"On the exchanges, we've continued not to implement the exchanges in Louisiana. We're going to work very hard to get Governor Romney elected so this law will be repealed long before the effective dates," Jindal added.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) did not go as far as Jindal on the call, although he made clear that his state is not jumping to comply just yet.

"We don't even know exactly what that federal exchange would look like," he said. "So there's still some uncertainty at this point as to what the right course is. And over the next days and weeks we're going to be evaluating the case as well as the options for Virginia."

On Thursday, another leading Republican governor -- Wisconsin's Scott Walker -- similarly said, "Wisconsin will not take any action to implement Obamacare. I am hopeful that political changes in Washington, D.C., later this year ultimately end the implementation of this law at the federal level."

While Obama's health care mandate was upheld by the Supreme Court, there was a bit of good news for anti-Obama Republican governors in the ruling. Part of the Affordable Care Act sought to dramatically expand Medicaid to cover more uninsured Americans. On Thursday, the Supreme Court decided that states that refuse to comply will not lose all existing Medicaid funds. Instead, they simply will not receive new funds going forward.

The federal government has promised to pick up the full cost of the Medicaid expansion for the first three years, and reimburse 90 percent of the cost for states after that.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) held a call with reporters and bloggers on Thursday afternoon and said she believes that states will find the Medicaid funds hard to resist.

"A big expansion of Medicaid is part of this bill, as you know, and in order to make it saleable and tactical, we have 300 percent of the benefits described in this bill paid for in Medicaid to the states those first three years of the bill. I don't think the governors will turn that down," she said. "First of all, the people will have the need; the urgency is there. They don't have to have any matching funds."

"I believe that once this bill is rolling and states experience the benefits of it, it will be very hard for a state to say, 'I'm not taking 100 percent of the coverage that Medicaid would provide for these people.' That's our thinking on the subject," she added.

Neither Jindal nor McDonnell said whether they would accept the Medicaid funds.

"Here in Louisiana, we've not applied for the grants, we've not accepted many of these dollars," Jindal said. "We're not implementing the exchanges. We don't think it makes any sense to implement Obamacare in Lousiana. The next opportunity we have to get rid of this law is to get Governor Romney elected, and I absolutely believe that he will be elected in November, and one of his first actions will be to repeal and replace this law."

NYC family in Israel: US remains land of 'freedom'

JERUSALEM ? It was in August 2011 when the Goldstein family decided it was time to give up what America had to offer and move their life more than 5,500 miles away to Israel.

Aviva and Seth Goldstein left their families and a fantastic life in the Bronx for what is perceived by many as a country torn by war and conflict.

One year after their move you couldn't find a happier and more enthusiastic family in Jerusalem. Aviva's huge and warm smile doesn?t vanish from her face as she juggles a move to a new apartment and raising three girls: Aliana, 7, Tahila, 5, and Liba, 3.

For Aviva and Seth coming to Israel wasn?t about finding a greener pasture somewhere else? ?? but as Jews they felt like not coming to the Holy Land was like standing on the sidelines of history. It was always a place that just called to them, where they dreamed of living.

As the Goldstein family lay down a nice picnic spread near the old Jerusalem railway tracks, an area dubbed as the Israeli version of New York City's High Line, I asked Aviva and Seth what America represents for them and what role America has in the world today.

"The first thing that would come to mind when you think of America is liberty and freedom," Seth said. "I don?t think the U.S. has retreated from that identity and I don't think it lost a piece of that identity. I think it stands for freedom and democracy [now] as much as ever.?

NBC News

Aviva and Seth Goldstein with their three daughters in Jerusalem.

"For me," Aviva said, "America is also freedom and liberty. But I think that there is a big piece of America that?s comfort, with liberty and security, and that there is mobility within that.?

'Economic opportunity'
Both Aviva and Seth have had careers in education, but at this point Aviva described herself as a "full time mom," while Seth works at the Shalem Center, a research institute in Jerusalem. ?

"I think America stands for economic opportunity as well,? Seth said. "Also for all sorts of religious opportunities, that go hand-in- hand with freedom. It really is a place that you can grow in all sorts of uninhibited ways and be successful in all sorts of remarkable ways.?

How did they think the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan changed America?

"I think it stretched America's finances and it reminded the world that America stands for something more than just isolating itself in a bubble, but that it has a responsibility to the rest of the world," Seth said. "The extent that America was involved in it is a reflection of its sense of responsibility to other nations, to other people, to humanity."

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

Aviva also believed the U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan was a positive thing.? "I think that as Jews, who always had an interest in Israeli world politics, I think it was easier for us to see the evil," said Aviva.? "I think we?re used to being stuck with really bad neighbors,? so on some level it was good that America was involved."

As for their three girls, Aviva said the move has just caused them all to flourish,? even though they miss their grandparents. "Thank god for iPads," Aviva said. She was referring to the fact they can see and talk to their family back in the U.S. almost for free using the device and the Internet.

"Coming here is the fulfillment of a dream," Aviva explained. "I remember when we were dating 10 years ago, walking the streets of Manhattan fantasying about raising our unborn children in Jerusalem and now it's our reality. It's nothing short of a miracle."

Are creative business cards counter-productive? | Webdesigner Depot

Being a business owner,?entrepreneur?or even just a freelancer can sometimes have its slower moments. When things get a little dry or you want to really increase your business, you?ve got to do some networking.

Networking often leads to creating relationships. Making relationships with the right people almost always guarantees increases in business. See, even if you are just a freelance designer, I?m sure you can attest to the fact that the majority of your business has come from previous relationships or relationships that you cultivated.

Networking can be tough. If you?re anything like me, networking can be a little out of your comfort zone. But meeting someone face to face and explaining to them your benefits is something that cannot be avoided. Quite frankly, no one wants to work with someone they don?t know, let alone someone who they just looked up.

Creating relationships is?dependent?on first impressions. First impressions in networking often end up trickling down to a very important piece of the puzzle: the business card.

The purpose of business cards

The most important purpose of the business card is to inform. We?re talking about networking here: when you and the person you just met, leave each other, you?ve got to be able to give that person something to let them know how to contact you. It also has to let them know who you are. Your business card has to give them all your essential professional information as well as your contact information.

The business card is not and was never meant to be an alternative for those that lack the ability to network or those who just don?t ? dropping business cards somewhere is rarely effective. There are some business cards that have way too much information on them ? business cards are not resumes, portfolios or product catalogs. There are some business cards that don?t have enough information on them in an attempt to bait people into trying to find out more about them ? but if I have no clue who or what you are, I probably have no interest in you.

You want to have a business card that references who you are. All the extra stuff is completely secondary and should be added sparingly. Don?t try to fit all your recent work on your card, maybe just a couple. Don?t be too salesy on it, perhaps just have a coupon code or a special link to your web-shop. But never ever take away the essentials.

Heavy on the creativity?

Yes, everyone has a business card. Yes, there are a bunch of them that look alike and it?s hard knowing you?re handing your business card to a person that receives tons weekly or even daily. Yes, you want yours to stand out amongst them all.

The problem here is it might be getting out of hand. Piling creative ideas on top of creative ideas on a 3.5 x 2 inch card is a bit much?even if you do change the dimensions. I mean, let?s keep in mind we?ve got to have the essentials. But it?s no longer uncommon for folks to want to make their business card useful or use some other sort of material or just make it super decorative. Should we really be doing this?

The super-creative business card is fun to see. We in the design community eat up these business card inspiration posts. But are we really thinking about if it?s performing its purpose? There are many business cards out there transform into something people can use. That?s a really neat idea, but if it?s too useful, then it could lose its informing abilities. If I?m too busy using it, I might not be all that interested in what?s on it, especially if the two have nothing to do with each other. Sometimes we use different materials and different shapes and do all round different (yet creative) things to our business cards, but if it?s too creative and not even useful, will people hold on to, or even remember it?

Some examples

It?s tough as a designer to want to say something that may be way too creative. The business card has been in use for as long as I can remember ? why try to reinvent the wheel on something that?s not even broken? Why not just make something in between great creativity and usefulness? I understand many designers want to be remembered and leave an impression, but if we overdo things then it can be seen as counterproductive. Here, take a look at what I mean:

Asthma Allergy Centre

While this idea is extremely clever (without good lung health, you can?t blow the balloon), it just feels like a gimmick, it isn?t really all that useful. People like to store cards in their wallet; that?s a little hard here. Wouldn?t those with weaker lungs need this information more? Clever and cute idea, the longevity is in question however.

Choko La

Mmmm?chocolate. But when I unwrap my chocolate, I typically dispose of my wrapper. Not a bad idea, but the real gem here is the chocolate, the contact information happens to be secondary.

Gitam BBDO

Another great idea, but again, after usage the package just becomes trash. Not to mention this company has nothing to do with spices ? that can get a bit confusing.

Murmure Communication and Design

This is a concrete business card. While there is a much deeper meaning here (I believe hidden in the embossing and typography) I think this is one of those ideas that is a bit too deep and too novel. It?s made out of concrete.

Department of Energy

Beforehand, I will go ahead and concede that the target market for this business card is probably not graphic designers. If it were, it?d totally go over our heads. It?s clever, because it?s the Department of Energy, so they took what looks like some wire and stamped their info on it. It?s not that great because it?s extremely small and relatively useless.

Dog coach

So, after the dog eats the treat, what?s the best way to contact him (especially if you are extremely forgetful)?

Environmental consultant

Recycling is something everyone should do ? being eco-friendly helps all of us in the long run. Stamping your information on what seems to be trash just doesn?t seem like the best way to do things. I get that the person is being eco-friendly and taking it to the extreme, but many printers have 100% recycled paper. Maybe it?s just me, but I don?t keep a ton of my receipts?or spare cardboard.

Head 2 Head shop

Some of us may not understand the usability of this business card, but I?m not afraid to say I do. This is an example of making your business card usable without having to sacrifice anything, as just half the card can be used as a filter. Next you just have to remember what you did with the card?

Electronic business card

Unfortunately, I am unsure of what happens when you push the button, but that does not change my skepticism. What happens when it just flat out doesn?t work?

Mr. Lube

This is clever because it reminds you of the oil light on your car?s dashboard. This is another creative business card that doesn?t have to sacrifice a lot in order to get its point across.

Ninja BTL

The unusual shape makes this an extremely creative and standout business card, and it also makes a bunch of sense. My only issue and concern here, again is storage. I can?t fit this into a wallet and it won?t fare to well in a purse. Cool, nonetheless.

Paint & CIA

These magnetic business cards can attach to your car and help a lil? nick in your paint job. This is probably one of the most genuinely useful business cards I?ve ever seen. It?s not stellar that you have to turn the card around to use the useful part, but this is extremely clever nonetheless.

Personal trainer

Folks really have great ideas when it comes to designing and creating business cards. This is another clever idea for a personal trainer, you have to stretch it open to use it. But much like the previous balloon business card, it seems counter productive and targeting the wrong group.

Mondo do Condominio

They sell cleaning products, so of course, it makes sense to put their information on a sponge. It?s cute and they are small enough to fit in a wallet. I just hope the information stays on if someone decides to actually use them.

Tamiya Shop Direct

Basically, you?re supposed to pop off the contact information and use it to make little figurines. Another, extremely cute idea that ends up sacrificing pretty much everything for the sake of creativity. However, the idea is so cool, I?d probably look them up after building.

Conclusion

Creativity is that thing that makes designers different from one another. It?s a personal perspective that shines differently through each person. Too much creativity does not sound like a problem, but if you have too much of what makes sense to you, it may not make sense to someone else. Keeping things simpler does not mean you have to approach the problem without any creativity, it just means you want to create something that is widely acceptable and understood. On top of that, you don?t want to go around sacrificing your contact information just to have a super creative business card.

Business cards are tough because everyone has one and of course you want yours to stand out. But let?s be honest, if your?personality?and presentation stand out, the need for a business card is sometimes irrelevant. I?ve known designers and business people who can get clients just based on their personality or other work they?ve done. Business cards are nice, but focus on the essentials, on creating relationships and giving out useful information, not just making the most super-creative business card you?ve seen.

Then again, it could all be a trick just to get your business card, and by extension your name, on as many websites as possible. Touch?.

How A Dating Coach Can Help You Build Muscle ... - JCD Fitness

Today?s article is specifically for a group of guys I?ve been conversing with over the last few years through email, internet forums, and in passing at the gym. Today I plan to address some problems many beginners face when it comes to getting big and strong.

Strangely, none of these problems are physical. These guys are all fully capable, and in good health. The issue seems to lie deep within their psyche.

I?ve touched on some of this before in my Former Fat Boy Syndrome article, so if you found that one of value, you?ll surely resonate with today?s message.

WARNING: Some of the material I?m referencing (mainly the RSD video by Owen Cook) may be offensive to some of you. Just because I?m referencing this video doesn?t mean I agree with everything in it.

In saying that, if you?re easily offended, you probably want to refrain from watching the video and just pay attention to my article. I didn?t have to include the video, but the concepts Owen discusses about success and human nature need to be communicated and he does a very good job of that.

Background Info About The Video I?m Referencing Today

The video title is ?The Truth About Success 2 ? Execution, Learning From Failure, Not Being A Lazy Slug ? it?s a 2 hour presentation by Owen Cook, Co-Founder and Producer of Real Social Dynamics, the world?s largest dating coaching company.

Now I want you to know that we?re not talking about dating, picking up women or seduction techniques in this article. My website is not the proper avenue to teach guys how to build confidence and charisma when it comes to approaching women.

However, the reason I?m referencing this video is because many of the topics Owen discusses directly correlate with success in general. Owen Cook is a hard-working entrepreneur, and someone whom I have much respect for when it comes to achieving success in his respective field.

Owen travels the world teaching guys how to be confident in approaching women, and building relationships. Over the years, I?ve watched his talks and lectures evolve from teaching those how to be successful with women to lessons about achieving success, and living an enriched life.

Who Is This Article For?

  • Are you a dude who wants to get big and strong, but doesn?t know where to start?
  • Do you have an irrational fear of gaining body fat that keeps you from making any progress in the gym?
  • Do you keep making excuses about why you can?t build the physique you want?
  • Do you constantly change your mind about building muscle and losing body fat?

If this sounds like you, keep reading.

The primary roadblocks we?ll be discussing today are:

  • Information Overload
  • Irrational Fear of Fat Gain
  • Making Excuses and NOT TAKING ACTION

Free Advice Is Hardly Ever Taken Seriously

A few weeks ago, I got an email from a reader who I?d been conversing with since August 2011. He filled out a consultation request and it read the following:

  • Name is Matt
  • 17 yrs old
  • 5?5?
  • 140lbs (body fat: 14-16%)
  • I squat 230?5, bench 165?5, deadlift 305?5
  • I want to lose body fat and I?m extremely experienced with intermittent fasting

My first response was similar to this:

Hey Matt, First of all, you?re 17 and 140lbs ? you likely have no business dieting and how do you know so much about fasting? When I was your age, I didn?t even know what a calorie was, let alone intermittent fasting.

We went onto discuss exactly why I didn?t feel he should be dieting. And my reasoning was twofold.

  1. He was too young to think about dieting, especially at his body weight of 140lbs.
  2. He?s at a prime time in his life when he can grow rapidly if he?ll just lift heavy stuff and eat his mama?s home cooking.

We went back and forth about working together, but I was adamant he mustn?t diet! Needless to say we lost contact. No way was I going to let this kid do anything other than train heavy and stuff his face under my supervision.

So now we can fast-forward about 9 months. By this time, RogLaw and I?d begun our FitSmart podcast and had been discussing various topics about training, and nutrition.

We got to chatting about free advice and regardless of how great it is, no one ever takes it seriously.

It turns out Matt was listening to this episode.

So I get an email toward the end of May from Matt again. This time it was different ? he mentioned the podcast he listened to and felt obligated to give me an update. I?m sure glad he did.

I then learned after our exchange, he?d contacted my friend and mentor, Alan Aragon, who eventually gave him almost the exact advice I did: eat big, get strong and gain some body weight.

In his email, Matt shared with me that he finally took our advice, decided to get out of his own way, so to speak, begin eating well and training hard.

In about 12 weeks, he went from 140lbs to 160lbs, and added a significant amount of strength during this time frame (all numbers in pounds):

  • Bench: 160X5 ? 205X8
  • Overhead Press: 105X5 ? 135X8
  • Deadlift: 305X5 ? 380X3, 350X5,
  • Weighted Chins: BW ? BW+25X8

Turns out he didn?t gain much body fat in the process, and looks fuller, and thicker than he did before. But the best part of his transformation is not only that of his physique, but of his mind. He was hesitant at first to take our advice, forget about the fat-gain paranoia, and do what it takes.

Here?s how he ended the initial update email ? a thank-you for pushing him to do what we knew was best for him. The bold is my emphasis.

All I know is, for the first time in my life, I?ve built a physique that I?m genuinely proud of, and I can?t tell you just how awesome it feels. I know it?s nothing spectacular compared to most fitness junkies, but just having a respectable physique compared to most of my peers has given me a newfound confidence that has carried over to every area of my life.

Just wanted to say thanks again to people like yourself who helped push me in the right direction, even if it took awhile to get through my thick head.

Now there?s one thing I want you to remember here: THIS GUY IS 17 YEARS OLD. It?s pretty rare for dudes outside of athletic programs to take the advice of those older than them when it comes to strength training, and muscle gain.

Why?

Mainly because there is so much information out there ? much of which is so conflicting when comparing sources. Jason Ferruggia mentioned a few weeks ago that in order to be successful, you should probably get your information from only a few credible sources. The more books, articles, and resources you read, the more likely you are to find contrasting viewpoints.

Now there?s nothing wrong with having a broad knowledge base, but when you?re easily influenced, we must try to minimize the distractions.

Matt and I?s email conversation spanned over many exchanges and we eventually got on the phone for an interview. So, if you?re a young guy who?s ever been worried about fat gain, or afraid that you?re not doing the right things when it comes to training and eating for size, please listen to this interview I did with Matt.

We go over many of the pitfalls not only young guys, but beginners experience in general. Some of the topics discussed are the following:

  • Starting out ? how he used to curl more than he could bench
  • How his irrational fears crippled his efforts
  • Why his obsession with his physique made him smaller and weaker and how it affected other aspects of his life
  • How a few months of making no progress turned into a YEAR of no progress
  • How he finally took action, let go, and flipped the switch to experience success in strength and muscle gains
  • His dealing with the daily mental battles
  • What adding strength and size to his frame did for his confidence
  • Why he recommends to stop focusing on body composition and all the tiny details

Be sure to listen to his short interview (around 25 minutes): You can download the audio file by right clicking here and hitting ?save-as? or you can use the player below.

And now, you?re about to learn how a dating coach can help you experience massive success with your strength and muscle-building efforts.

And get this: he doesn?t even lift!

?Success is about focusing on what you want ? not focusing on what you don?t want.? ? Owen Cook, RSD

This principle applies to anything you want in life ? lots of money, healthy relationships, a significant other, etc. In this case, you probably want to be bigger and stronger than you currently are.

If you?re reading here, I don?t have to tell you that strength and mass is a product of eating well and getting stronger over time.

There?s NO other way around it.

In the video (36:30) Owen is talking about one of the simplest principles of success ? focusing on what you want, and not what you don?t want.

He?s teaching the guys that success is a narrow road, in which you must have a focused set of behaviors. As you walk along this narrow road, you?re going to mess up ? and to be successful, you have to keep course-correcting along the way.

Owen makes a great point where he essentially says don?t focus on the short-term results; focus on the behaviors that are conducive to success.

What does this matter? Because those who have been successful at getting big and strong all follow a certain set of proven processes and behaviors.

What are the proven processes and behaviors???

I think this is pretty apparent, but those who are big and strong all have a few things in common. They stuck to a well-designed strength or bodybuilding program for a matter of months (6-12) before making any major changes.

They ate above maintenance (more calories than they burned daily) and pushed their body weight up. They focused on strength gains and performance goals.

If you need a routine, or need to know how this process works, check out the how to build muscle guide for beginners. Also, check out the JCDFitness beginners muscle-building routine (free PDF download).

Let me give you an example of two guys.

The focused guy knows the path to success. He?s following a proven routine, and eating well each day. He?s been keeping record of his intake and his workouts.? Each week he?s getting stronger and noticing that his clothes are fitting tighter.

Despite the fact that his abs are not as pronounced as they were a few weeks ago doesn?t phase him. Why? He knows that his hard work is paying off. Plus, he?s enjoying his newfound confidence as his strength soars.

The scattered guy switches up his routine every other week. He continually changes his mind about dieting and bulking because he feels that he?s gaining fat too rapidly every time he eats over maintenance. He reads every piece of fitness info he can get his hands on and the differing opinions mess with his head.

His emotions control his decisions, which keeps him from sticking to any type of plan long enough to see results. He?ll probably continue this cycle for many months, and possibly years with no results to show for his haphazard efforts.

The difference between these guys is an understanding of the processes and behaviors that govern success.

Jahed Momand, a friend and accomplished weightlifter, who is now starting to coach others, says it best with the following quote:

?The most important thing you can do is keep going, and realize that your results, on any one day, are irrelevant. There will be ups and there will be downs.

Consistently getting under the bar is what we want, so ignore the daily results. Detach your ego from the outcome of any one particular day. The only thing that matters is you showed up.

Daily results are irrelevant in the long run, because it is the accumulation of your efforts and habits over time that determine what you get out of any diet or training program.??

? Jahed Momand

This is Matt?s story. He learned how to control his mind and his behaviors in a way that lead him to success.

Take home point:

Stick to the behaviors and processes that produce results ? discard everything else.

Now that we know there are indeed proven behaviors we must follow, let?s look at some of the pitfalls, along with ways to avoid them.

?Our biology tells us to maximize value and minimize time and effort? ? Owen Cook

At about 29:30, Owen says this phrase above, and every time I hear it I stop and think for a moment. We?ve grown as a species to make things easier. We want the greatest rewards without much effort.

This is not a bad thing entirely because technology has greatly improved our lives. I love writing articles on my iMac, as opposed to using a pencil and paper.

However, our current age also makes us lazy and susceptible to falling for voodoo marketing. Remember when I wrote Fitness Claims and Marketing ? How Our Emotions Control Us? This is a perfect example. Who doesn?t want abs in 7 minutes? Or who doesn?t want the fast track to muscle gain when a supplement ad claims you can add 10lbs of muscle in the next 5 days?

The old mantra is true: nothing worth having ever comes easily. It never works that way, and if it did, no one would appreciate success. Owen even says later in the video that he wouldn?t want to win the lottery because it would take away his drive and vigor to teach and build his business.

Don?t fall into the trap of believing this is an easy road. It?s not and I can tell you from experience. Don?t make this mistake.

Combat Your Irrational Fear of Fat Gain

?Our brains will rationalize almost anything that it thinks is in it?s best interest.? ? Owen Cook

In this segment of the video (about 1:09) Owen is telling the guys how some people get caught in this funk of laziness. In context, many guys are afraid to go out and initiate new friendships or relationships with girls. As a result, they will make excuses and come up with reasons why they can?t go out.

In short, their brains are making these excuses real to them, which causes them to develop an irrational belief that they can?t go out and thus, be successful meeting new women.

The same thing happens to the beginners who were either Former Fat Boys or the skinny-fat guys who have a death-like fear of adding an ounce of body fat. So what happens?

They typically under eat, and train too much in hopes of preventing any fat gain. But what typically happens is they get weaker and their body remains the same. Months and years go by without a single noticeable difference in their physique.

And it?s all based on a very irrational fear of adding slabs of body fat when over eating in the name of strength and size gains.

Here?s something you must realize.

No matter what, if you?re 150lbs and eating 1500 calories daily with the hopes of not adding any body fat, YOU WILL NOT REACH YOUR GOAL of a bigger, stronger physique.

This may sound a drastic approach to many, but I can assure you ? many people succumb to these types of behaviors over the irrational fear of fat gain.

First of all, if you?re eating well (at least 14-15xbody weight in kcals ? much more for some guys) and training 3-4 times per week, you?ll make strength gains and even build some muscle. You may have to eat more depending on how active you are.

But chronically eating much less than maintenance will forever keep you small and weak.

Keep doing this and YOU WILL FAIL.

?Failure is the default of not taking action.? ? Owen Cook

At 34:30, Owen is giving a talk about how you need to have a good mindset, and a hope that things will work out in your favor, but without a plan and actually taking action toward your goals, failure is in your future.

He even goes onto say that we must have a rational paranoia (I love this) of failure.

So what?

It means that you must be so afraid of not making progress that you do everything in your power to avoid looking back a year later to see no changes in your physique.

How will that make you feel knowing you wasted a year or longer because you couldn?t get it together?

It?s going to suck. You?re gonna be pissed that you didn?t listen to others. You?ll be frustrated that you couldn?t shut off the voice in your head telling you that you?re going to get fat if you eat a caloric surplus.

Let me elaborate ? I found this thread I found on Reddit and it?s a classic case.

As you see in the screenshot, he?s freaked out about eating over maintenance due to recently losing a lot of fat. Now, I don?t know this guy, but my hunch tells me he?ll let his irrational fear of gaining back the fat keep him from making any positive changes to his physique with regards to muscle gain.

He?ll probably start out training, and eating well, but as soon as he thinks he sees a hint of fat gain, he?ll cut calories drastically and begin an endless cycle that will result in failure.

Okay, so enough preaching. I hope you get the point. If you don?t take action, and control your thoughts, you?re going to lose at this game. And you will be very, very disappointed.

Plan Of Action

I came across a short post by Ryan Holiday the other night and it fits perfect with this theme. It?s titled Take Little Steps.

And here are your little steps to success.

  • Pick a training routine and stick with it for at least 6 months ? I don?t care what you choose as long as it?s within the realm of being good for a beginner. Think of Starting Strength, Stronglifts, Syatt?s routine or mine.
  • Commit to eating well for the entire time you?re training ? follow the guides Jordan and I laid out in the Muscle Building Guide for Beginners.
  • Cut your fitness reading down significantly ? pick 5-10 sources of your favorite info and read a little from those daily (maybe an article or two per day). This will ensure fitness info doesn?t flood your brain 24/7.
  • Focus on the journey, not the destination ? try to have fun every day and don?t let one or two bad sessions determine how you feel about where you?re headed. Realize that you?ve set a goal for yourself and that you?ll reach this goal by taking small, daily steps to eat and train well.
  • Cut out the thoughts that do not serve you ? Something else Jahed introduced me to was self-talk that can instantly change your state. If you find yourself pondering a thought that is not serving you, stop and say to yourself ?this thought does not serve me,? or ?this thought is not productive.? And then forget about it.
  • Develop a very real and rational paranoia that you will fail ? Don?t dwell on the negative thoughts, but remember this: if you don?t take these steps daily, you will fail ? don?t look back a year from now wishing you?d have taken my advice in this article.

Go forth. Eat, lift and be merry.

(AP) ? Four days before Mexico's presidential election, much of the nation's attention is focused on a man who appears certain to lose.

That man is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the fiery, feisty leftist who shut down the heart of Mexico City after the last election with mass protests against a narrow loss that he blamed on electoral fraud.

Final polls released Wednesday showed Lopez Obrador in second place, with the candidate of Mexico's former ruling party, Enrique Pena Nieto, anywhere from 8 to 17 percentage points in the lead.

As a result, few expect anything other than a Pena Nieto victory that will return the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, to the presidency after 12 years out of the nation's highest office.

What remains in doubt for millions of Mexicans is, will Lopez Obrador quietly accept defeat? Or will he call his followers back to the streets for a repeat of the 2006 allegations of fraud, and protests that shut down the heart of the capital for weeks and shook the faith of many, at home and abroad, in the stability of Mexico's young democracy?

In that last run, Lopez Obrador led until the final days and his backers could not believe the official result showing him less than 1 percentage point short of victor Felipe Calderon, though electoral courts upheld it. Lopez Obrador declared himself the "legitimate president of Mexico," named a Cabinet and toured the country to rally backers.

As his final campaign act this year, Lopez Obrador led thousands of people on a march Wednesday afternoon that many see as an uncomfortable echo of the last electoral battle.

Supporters waving the yellow flags of his party and wearing Lopez Obrador T-shirts shouted, "President! President! You are the President!" as they lined four lanes of Mexico City's central Reforma boulevard and headed to the Zocalo, the centuries-old square in the center of downtown that has served as the base for many of his protests.

Some of his supporters brought their pets, among them a white bull terrier with a message written on its side that read "a dog's life no more."

There were so many followers trying to get near Lopez Obrador that at one point of the march his security team had to take him out of the crowd through a hole they tore in a construction fencing around the Alameda park.

Maria Antonia Bedolla, a 37-year-old housewife at the march, said she is ready to take to the streets if Lopez Obrador loses again.

"He will win if they don't steal (the election) from us like they did six years ago," Bedolla said. If he loses "I will express my discontent about the fraud."

Lopez Obrador softened his rhetoric at the start of this three-month campaign, saying he wants to build a "Republic of Love" marked by reconciliation and peace. In recent days he has been pledging, when pressed, that he will respect the will of the people, though he asserts he is ahead.

But the former Mexico City mayor has also been launching sharp attacks on Pena Nieto and the PRI, and routinely expressing grave doubts about the validity of the electoral process and the potential for fraud.

He called Tuesday for supporters to closely monitor polling stations.

"These days we're preparing ourselves to defend the vote, so another electoral fraud isn't committed," Lopez Obrador told a crowd of backers.

Luis Rubio, president of the Center for Development Research, an independent think tank, said that Lopez Obrador has been "anticipating the alleged fraud for weeks. The notion that there is fraud is alive and well in his rhetoric."

"Lopez Obrador is Lopez Obrador and he will not recognize the result no matter what," Rubio said.

Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute was pressuring the candidates Wednesday to sign a "civility pact" committing them to respect the legitimacy and legality of Sunday's election results, a document that appeared squarely aimed at Lopez Obrador. The leftist has pledged that he or a campaign adviser would sign the pact in coming days.

"We are counting on the maturity and democratic spirit of each of the candidates," Deputy Interior Secretary Obdulio Avila told The Associated Press. "We expect that the free will of the people will be reflected in the vote, and that will be accepted by all the participants."

Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, president of the PRI, told reporters that the pledge "is a guarantee that will avoid a post-electoral conflict. The country doesn't deserve to live through the nightmare of the last six years."

Rubio said any new protests may not grow to anywhere near the size of those in 2006. Many Mexicans will have no tolerance for a repeat, among them the politically ambitious mayor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard, who is widely seen as the future of Lopez Obrador's Democratic Revolution Party.

"If they do what they did six years ago, it'll hurt me," said Humberto Ruiz Gamino, who sells fresh-cut mangos along Reforma. "I have a lot of ripe mangos, and if they organize protests, I'm going to lose a lot of business."

A wide margin of defeat would also sap the energy of any protest.

The polls show Pena Nieto favored by 32.2 percent to 41.2 percent of voters, in polls with margins of error ranging from 2.5 to 3 percent.

Lopez Obrador had support ranging from 23.8 to 25.4 percent. Josefina Vaquez Mota of the conservative National Action Party was third with support ranging from 18.8 to 20.8 percent.

Rubio also said that Lopez Obrador could be bolstered by a recent surge of antipathy toward the PRI, which ruled Mexico with a near total control for seven decades. That hostility has been most vocal among a national student movement that began with a protest against Pena Nieto at a private Mexico City university.

Kitchen Style for the Serious Cook | At Home with Kim Vallee

You see plenty of pretty kitchens in magazines and online. Unfortunately, some kitchens are more beautiful than useful. I am interested by kitchens that are practical and beautiful. I found several ideas when I looked at the portfolio of Deulonder Domestic Architecture. They are?is a Spanish interior design studio that cater to passionate cooks. Their kitchens fill the needs of people who really cook in their kitchen and who love to have guests over while they cook.

One common denominator in their design is how they juxtapose three main areas: the kitchen, the dining room and the butler?s pantry/serving area.

The English Home Restaurant-Style Kitchen

This is unusual kitchen and dining room layout works if you like to entertain or have a large family.?The kitchen itself is a mix between a galley-style kitchen and a L-shaped plan. Deulonder?imagined a kitchen for a large family living on the outskirts of London or Boston.?Let?s look at the ideas to steal in this stunning kitchen and dining area designed by?Deulonder?for?Casa Decor Barcelona 2011.

For one thing, the fact that the kitchen/ prep / serving areas are wrapped around the dining room means that you can hire staff without?jeopardizing?the intimate mood of your dinner.

Secondly, you have to admire the efficiency of this kitchen.?It is equipped for serious cooking. You have one big sink per prep area; which means you are never on someone else toes. There is a?two-oven, four burner Viking stove with a grill and a?teppanyaki. And there are plenty of the storage shelves or holes to store your large platters and baking sheets! I?m jealous!

The third great feature are the glass walls. Without them, the dining room would be very dark. On a bright sunny day, I imagine myself serving brunch in winter and feeling warm. Another advantage is that they cook can see what is happening with the diners. If you need to keep a wall divides your dining room from your kitchen, you could examine how you can?incorporate?a big window inside your wall.

If you are still convinced that it is an amazing space, look at this view from the dining room.

Monitoring Long Term Care in Texas

In Texas, long term care facilities are regularly being monitored by the Texas Long Term Care Ombudsman to ensure that elderly and disabled Texans are receiving the quality of care that they ought to receive.

Texas may not be among the states with the highest long term care (LTC) costs but its population aged 60 and older is growing fast and many of them are expected to live into their 80s; and some could develop chronic health conditions along the way.

For that reason, everyone in the state is encouraged to work out a rational LTC plan otherwise middle-class Texans will end up with Medicaid and this means only one thing -- more assets or properties are going to estate recovery.

To protect whatever it is that they intend to pass on to their loved ones, residents are advised to plan their future wisely.

In-home care is strongly encouraged by the state as it is aware that many Texans prefer to receive care in the comfort of their own homes for as long as possible. Elder care specialists believe that every individual has to go through the LTC journey in a manner that he is most comfortable for this is the best way to ensure his happiness, independence and enthusiasm for life.

However, to be able to receive quality in-home care a person has to be financially ready. It is not right and it is absolutely unfair to think that family members will be around 24 hours to provide all of his needs because they have their own lives to plan and dreams to pursue.

If providing care is not a tough occupation there would be no assisted living facilities, nursing homes, home health care agencies, and other LTC settings.

Everybody would just be so happy to leave their jobs to take turns in providing care or assistance to an infirm, disabled or chronically ill loved one.

How to Plan Texas Long Term Care

Two very important things greatly affect people's LTC plans. The first is their health while the cost of care is the second.

According to LTC specialists, everyone should start planning his future health care needs before he reaches the age of retirement. This is especially true if one intends to purchase a long term care insurance (LTCI) policy because insurance companies are very particular about the health condition of LTCI applicants. The slightest sign of unhealthiness turns them off instantly.

Nobody can easily predict what he will require healthcare-wise unless he was born with a congenital disease. That said, it is everybody's responsibility to monitor his health so that he can easily identify the level of care that he may potentially require in the future.

Aside from his health, he also has to keep up on the cost of care as it never ceases to go up. In fact, it is expected to double 13 years from now so expect a nursing home that currently charges a daily rate of $169 to subject its residents to $338 beginning 2025.

Five years after the doubling of LTC costs, these are expected to quadruple. When that time comes, it would be impossible for average Americans to pay their LTC expenses with their personal money.

Texas long term care is not something to be taken lightly. Many families have been subjected to the unreasonable cost of care which eventually took their homes and other properties. The younger generation can change their fate if they do something worthwhile.

Afghans sing again -- of love and war

In a country where music was silenced in the name of Allah for five years, the beat is back and even rock shares the airwaves with the romantic strains of traditional Afghan songs.

The Islamist Taliban, who banned all music as sinful while they were in power between 1996 and 2001, are now waging an insurgency against the Western-backed government -- but they can't stop the music.

They have even developed an acapella style of their own, chanting religious poems to the glory of suicide bombers and their fighters waging war on government forces and some 130,000 NATO troops.

The Central Asian nation has an ancient tradition of songs built on its rich culture of poetry, ranging from war, heroism and epic tales of life in this harsh land, to delicate love stories.

But there is a vast difference between traditional lyrics and those of the Taliban:

-- Traditional: "Last night I stole a quick glance at your moon-like face through your dark hair," goes a famous Afghan song performed in the 1970s by celebrity Abdul Rahim Sarban.

"Your half-open crimson dress was prettier than a hundred roses in the garden... a narcissus shies away before the beauty of your seducing eyes."

--Taliban: "The youth is out on a fedayee (suicide) mission, his heart filled with passion for his religion.

"The youth is out on fedayee mission, the angels are watching him, the paradise houris (pure companions) are watching when the suicide bomber strikes."

Even in the new forms of pop and rock, imported along with the NATO troops, the war is never far away.

In a makeshift studio in their apartment in west Kabul, four young men have formed a band called Morcha (Ants), which they describe as Afghanistan's first rock band.

Vocalist Shekib Musadeq, drummer Shafiq Najafi and two bass players Hassanzada and Behroz Shujahi gather daily for practice, rocking their building -- and their neighbours -- with Western beats.

"Music has been part of the people's life ever since history remembers," says Hassanzada.

He describes their lyrics as "neither about love, nor Taliban hatred" but about current realities in their war-shattered country: a deadly insurgency, corruption, the illicit drugs trade and natural disasters.

"Fifteen died in Helmand, the drought ended in Herat... NATO conducted a rapid air strike on a wedding party," the band sings against the beat of drum and bass guitar while practising for a big concert in Kabul.

"The Taliban peace plan on the president's desk, the elders of Paktika endorsed it... The headlines from Afghanistan, thanks to the world are all about these."

But love songs accompanied by traditional tabla drums and elegant, lute-like rubab strings, remain a staple of the old style:

"I'm a worshipper of flowers, drunk without drinking (because) tonight I'm with a flower," sings Sarban.

And in a country where many women still wear the all-enveloping blue burqa that was enforced by the Taliban, lyrics are not short of erotic elements.

"I still smell your scent in my bed, feeling your sweet lips all over me," sang the late Ahmad Zahir, who was nicknamed "Afghanistan's Elvis".

The Taliban, who shunned modernity while in power, now use video and the Internet to get their message across.

As a background to a video posted on their website showing dozens of Taliban fighters attacking a US military base in Paktika province, they chant:

"The lion cubs can't be tamed... you'll be crying, lost, unable to find your way home, your child will never see you again... leave our home before it's too late or Afghanistan will become your second Vietnam."

The Taliban chants are sometimes used as mobile phone ring tunes across southern Afghanistan, the heartland of the insurgency -- where they can be a passport through any trouble with the militants.

But the rest of the range of musical styles can be heard on dozens of radio and television channels, and drifting though open car windows as drivers negotiate the chaotic streets of the once silent capital, Kabul.

Abdul Satar Qasimi, a professional rubab player and singer who runs a musical instrument shop in Kabul's "Musician Street", says Western-style music has pushed many classical performers to the sidelines.

Qasimi, 45, fled to Pakistan when the Taliban took Kabul in 1996, and his music store was destroyed by the militants. He returned after the Taliban were toppled in a US-led invasion in late 2001.

"Now music has flourished but not for us. More and more people are listening to the new music, rock, pop and all these new forms of music," he said.
