Dr. Charles Blanke is chairman-elect of one of the National Cancer Institute's five research cooperatives. Formerly known as the Southwest Oncology group, the group now just goes by SWOG; it consists of more than 4,000 physician researchers around the world and typically is conducting about 100 clinical trials at any one time.
The move means OHSU patients will have more access to SWOG clinical trials. Blanke will work to involve more OHSU researchers in SWOG.
"I was drawn to the Knight Cancer Institute because of its leadership in molecularly-driven, personalized cancer medicine, as well as its willingness to make significant investments in research to advance that field," said Blanke.
Blanke is no stranger to OHSU. In fact, he spent more than a decade at what was then known as the OHSU Cancer Institute. In 2008 he left as the institute faced administrative and financial woes; "Morale is lower than a pregnant snake's belly," he said at the time.
Blanke currently serves as vice-president of systemic therapy for the British Columbia Cancer Agency, chief of medical oncology at the University of British Columbia and also heads a task force for the NCI's Gastrointestinal Steering Committee. He will join OHSU in February and take over as chair of SWOG in May.
