Lawsuit Challenging Walker's Anti-Union Law Could Be Revived

MADISON, Wis. ? A prosecutor asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Friday to reopen his lawsuit challenging Gov. Scott Walker's contentious collective bargaining law, contending a justice who voted to dismiss the suit earlier this year got free legal help from the firm defending the law.

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne argued in filings with the court that it should vacate its decision because Justice Michael Gableman never disclosed his arrangement with the Michael Best and Friedrich law firm. Wisconsin's ethics code prohibits state officials from accepting free gifts, and the judicial ethics code bars judges from accepting gifts from anyone likely to appear before them.

Ozanne asked the court to reinstate a circuit judge's earlier ruling declaring the law void and disqualify Gableman from participating in further proceedings if he won't recuse himself.

"Reasonable, well-informed people would reasonably question Justice Gableman's ability to be impartial under the facts presented here," he wrote. "Respectfully, any litigant in any case deserves to have his case heard by a judge who has not secretly received a valuable gift from the other side's lawyer."

Gableman's attorney, Viet Dinh, didn't immediately return a message late Friday afternoon. He told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this week that he doesn't believe the free legal services amounted to a gift. A message left at Michael Best and Friedrich's Madison office wasn't immediately returned.

Ozanne filed his lawsuit in March, alleging Republican lawmakers violated open meetings laws when they convened a committee to revise the collective bargaining measure without proper public notice. The meeting came during the height of massive around-the-clock protests at the state Capitol against the legislation, which eliminated most public workers' union rights. Walker, a Republican, said the legislation was needed to help local governments absorb deep cuts in state aid, but Democrats saw it as a blatant assault on unions, one of their key constituencies.

A Dane County judge declared the law void in May. But the state Supreme Court's conservative four-justice majority upheld the law in June, finding legislative rules trumped the open meetings law. The decision allowed the law to take effect.

Walker's spokesman, Cullen Werwie, issued a one-sentence response to Ozanne's action by email Friday, saying "we are confident the Supreme Court got it right the first time."

Michael Best and Friedrich helped the state Justice Department defend the law.

Gableman had hired the firm to defend him in a 2008 ethics case stemming from one of his campaign ads. The ad accused his opponent, then-incumbent Justice Louis Butler, of finding a loophole for a sex offender who went on to molest another child. The ad didn't mention that Butler failed to get the offender out of prison early and that the offender committed the new crime after he had served his sentence.

Word broke earlier this month that Gableman signed a contingency agreement with the law firm that called for him to pay attorneys' fees only if he prevailed in the case, a deal similar to promises personal injury lawyers make to clients not to collect payment unless they win.

The Supreme Court ultimately deadlocked 3-3 on whether the ad violated the ethics code. That meant Gableman didn't win or lose and didn't have to pay Michael Best and Friedrich for services some legal experts have estimated may have been worth thousands of dollars.

Dinh told the Journal Sentinel the services weren't a gift because the arrangement included the possibility of McLeod getting paid.

A court order forcing Gableman off the union case is highly unlikely. The court said in a 4-3 decision in July that justices can't force each other off cases; only a justice can decide for himself or herself whether he or she should stand down.

Ozanne wrote in his filings that if Gableman doesn't recuse himself, the rest of the court should reconsider that stance as well.

But even if Gableman steps aside, there's no guarantee the court will reopen the case. If no other justice changed his or her position on the lawsuit, a 3-3 deadlock would result.

Public sector unions have filed three other lawsuits challenging the collective bargaining law. Two cases are pending in federal court. The third is pending in Dane County Circuit Court.

Community Bank to acquire The Palm Bank

BBR Staff Writer Published 27 December 2011

Community Bank & Company has agreed to acquire Florida-based The Palm Bank, a subsidiary of Palm Bancorp.

The Palm Bank, established in 2003, provides banking and financial products and services to businesses and individuals.

The acquisition brings three additional banking centers, all located in Tampa, to the Community Bank network and grows the bank to over $850m in assets.

CBM Florida Holding Company chairman Marcelo Lima said that this acquisition creates an institution with 20 banking centers spanning the entire Tampa Bay region. It expands their presence from two to five branches in Tampa alone, fosters loans to businesses and individuals, and helps to drive economic recovery.

The transaction, is subject to certain customary conditions, is expected to close in the first half of 2012.

UN Urges Guinea Bissau Military to Respect Rule of Law

The United Nations Integrated Peace-Building Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS) is calling on the government to follow ?due process? after the West African nation launched an investigation into a suspected coup attempt.

Dozens of military officers and civilians have been arrested.

UNIOGBIS spokesman Vladimir Monteiro said the world body is also calling on the military to respect the rule of and civilian leadership. Military factions battled each other in the capital, Bissau, Monday after rebel soldiers raided an armory and stormed the armed forces headquarters in the city.

While briefing members of the international community, Monteiro said Guinea Bissau?s foreign minister, ?Adelino Mano Queta, did not name those arrested in connection with the army unrest.

?The minister informed us that some military people have been arrested and some civilians [but] didn?t provide their identities saying that investigation will be carried out,? said Monteiro.

Many observers described the incident as an attempted coup after Prime Minister Carlos Gomes sought refuge at a foreign embassy following the confrontation.

The government denies the coup attempt after launching an investigation into the incident. Monteiro says the acting president and speaker of the parliament, Raimundo Pereira, requested the investigation into Monday?s incident following a meeting with senior administration officials.

The U.N., Monteiro says, emphasized the need for the official inquiry to ensure the respect for human rights.

?All investigations should respect due process at the same time calling for the military to abide by civilian control and to respect the rule of law,? continued Monteiro. ?This was stressed last week by the Security Council while adopting the resolution standing the UN office mandate here in the country.?

He also said the U.N. is cautioning the military to refrain from using force to resolve differences. The world body is also calling for reforms within the security agencies.

?Without these reforms,? said Monteiro, ?it will be very difficult to have a professional armed force, which is essential for stability.?

Company sues former employee over right to Twitter followers

How much are Twitter followers worth? That's the question that will be asked by a Californian court after a former employee of news and reviews site PhoneDog took his followers with him when he changed jobs.

MadDog didn't take too kindly to this, especially as he changed the name of his account from @Phonedog_Noah to @noahkravitz when he left in October 2010. He had over 17,000 followers at the time, a number that has now risen to over 23,000.

PhoneDog wants damages of $2.50 a month per follower over a period of eight months - a total of $340,000.

The argument is over whether the followers actually constitute a customer database.

PhoneDog Media told the New York Times that "the costs and resources invested by PhoneDog Media into growing its followers, fans and general brand awareness through social media are substantial and are considered property of PhoneDog Media L.L.C."

Issues like these can only become more common. The BBC was criticised for letting nearly 60,000Twitter followers go when political correspondentLaura Kuenssberg joined ITV.

Laywers have warned that such issues need to be written into employment contracts.

GOP primary is family affair

Mitt Romney's wife gushes about his silly side and devotion to their five sons and 16 grandchildren.

Rick Santorum's college-age daughter opines online about missing the campus coffee shop and chats with friends about their Friday night plans.

Jon Huntsman's daughters generate much-needed buzz for him with a joint Twitter account and online videos, including at least one that went viral.

Days away from voting in the Republican presidential race, the path to the nomination quickly is becoming a crowded family affair with spouses and offspring pitching in and doing far more than just smiling from the sidelines.

Ann Romney, Anita Perry and Callista Gingrich are starring in new TV ads for their husbands. Romney extols her husband's character and says, "To me, that makes a huge difference" in a candidate. Perry tells the "old-fashioned American story" of how she and her husband were high school sweethearts who had to wait until he was done flying airplanes around the world for the Air Force before they could marry.

Callista Gingrich wishes the nation a Merry Christmas "from our family to yours" in husband Newt Gingrich's new holiday-themed TV ad.

Candidate kids are helping, too, acting as surrogates, strategists and, in some cases, sounding boards for parents competing for the right to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

"There are times when I wonder why I'm not sitting in the coffee shop on campus with my friends, lightheartedly discussing ('Saturday Night Live') videos, how bad the cafeteria is, what our plans are for Friday night or how absolutely swamped we are with schoolwork," Santorum's daughter, Elizabeth, lamented in a recent blog post. "But this is where God wanted me."

Sometimes the family members campaign with the candidates, and other times they go it alone.

While Rick Perry spent several days campaigning in Iowa recently, his wife was in New Hampshire emphasizing his small-town upbringing and conservative values at a retirement community chapel. Audience members peppered her with questions about subjects such as taxes, immigration and the death penalty.

"She handled them quite well," said Sid Schoeffler, an independent voter from Concord. "When she knew the answer or knew the campaign's story line, she recited it. And when she didn't know, she said so. I thought that was refreshing.

"But whether it's enough to swing my vote, I don't know yet."

Nelly?ran up a $20,403.64 credit card bill with American Express -- which seems totally reasonable for a big name rap star. Just one problem ... AMEX says he never paid it!

The credit card company filed a lawsuit against Nelly (real name Cornell Iral Haynes, Jr) in Missouri back in October to try and get their money back (plus another $3,000 in attorney's fees). So far though, they claim Nelly has refused to pay what he owes.

A court hearing is scheduled for January 9. Calls to Nelly's camp were not returned.

Groundwater dropping globally

SAN FRANCISCO ? Groundwater levels have dropped in many places across the globe over the past nine years, a pair of gravity-monitoring satellites finds. This trend raises concerns that farmers are pumping too much water out of the ground in dry regions.

Water has been disappearing beneath southern Argentina, western Australia and stretches of the United States. The decline is especially pronounced in parts of California, India, the Middle East and China, where expanding agriculture has increased water demand.

?Groundwater is being depleted at a rapid clip in virtually of all of the major aquifers in the world's arid and semiarid regions,? says Jay Famiglietti, a hydrologist at the University of California Center for Hydrologic Modeling in Irvine, whose team presented the new trends December 6 at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Famiglietti and his colleagues detect water hidden below the surface using the modern equivalent of a dowsing rod: a pair of car-sized satellites, nicknamed Tom and Jerry, that are especially sensitive to the tug of gravity from below.

As the spacecraft chase each other around the planet like their cat and mouse namesakes, they are pulled apart and pushed together by areas of higher or lower gravity. Mountains and other large concentrations of mass have a big, obvious effect that?s consistent from month to month. But water moves around over time, creating small gravity fluctuations that the satellites? orbital motions respond to.

It takes a lot of flow to noticeably change the distance between the satellites. After subtracting the contributions of snowpack, rivers, lakes and soil moisture, scientists can detect changes in groundwater greater than a centimeter over an area about the size of Illinois.

This joint mission between NASA and the German Aerospace Center ? called the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, or GRACE ? has been creating monthly snapshots of global groundwater since 2002. The trends now identified in this data help fill in monitoring gaps and confirm problems in places where official groundwater information is unreliable or nonexistent.

?GRACE is very good for areas of the world where we don?t have good ground observations,? says Marc Bierkens, a hydrologist who studies groundwater at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

China, for example, has been shown to underestimate groundwater use. The country lacks the nationwide network of monitoring wells found in the United States. GRACE?s measurements suggest that water levels have been dropping six or seven centimeters per year beneath plains in the northeast.

In some areas, short-term climate variability may be to blame. For example, the plains of Patagonia in Argentina and areas across the southeastern United States ? areas that have been hit hard by droughts ? store less groundwater today than they did in 2002.

But there?s little doubt as to what?s behind the biggest drops: farming. An agricultural boom in northern India has helped to squeeze nearly 18 cubic kilometers of water from the ground every year (SN: 9/12/09, p. 5). That?s enough water to fill more than seven million Olympic swimming pools. And in California?s Central Valley, which supports about one-sixth of the nation?s irrigated land, the ground has been sinking for decades as landowners drill more wells and pull out almost 4 cubic kilometers of water per year (SN: 1/16/10, p. 14).

?People are using groundwater faster than it can be naturally recharged,? says Matthew Rodell, a hydrologist and GRACE team member at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Agricultural pressures are particularly worrisome in places like the Middle East, another hotspot on the new GRACE map. Water pumped out of the Arabian aquifer beneath Saudi Arabia and surrounding countries today fell as rain thousands of years ago. Once this fossil water disappears, there?s little new rainfall to replenish it. ?

Climate change will only worsen the problem, says Famiglietti. Precipitation patterns are becoming more extreme, increasing the severity of droughts. Wet areas are also becoming wetter and dry areas drier, which may accelerate declines in groundwater in some places over the coming years.

But even as the researchers sound the alarm, they don?t know how loud to crank up the volume. GRACE reveals only changes in groundwater. It doesn?t divulge how much water is left.

?We don?t really know how stressed the world?s largest aquifers are,? says Richey.

Some reservoirs, like the giant Nubian Aquifer that underlies North Africa, may be large enough to meet demand for centuries. But few reliable estimates exist of the amount of groundwater stored in the world?s aquifers.

Despite the uncertainties, Leonard Konikow, a hydrogeologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va., says that water use has become unsustainable in many places. Better irrigation systems that use less water could help to curb the problem, he says. So could channeling water during especially wet periods into aquifers instead of letting it run off into the ocean.

?There are too many areas in the world where groundwater development far exceeds a sustainable level,? says Konikow. ?Something will have to change.?

Occupy activists stake camp at Obama office (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Occupy Des Moines activists on Saturday vowed to shut down President Barack Obama's campaign offices and set up a camp outside they plan to maintain around the clock.

"We have every intention to keep this place closed down until we are satisfied," said Frank Cordaro, an activist and founder of the Catholic Worker group in Des Moines.

A handful of activists went to Obama's nondescript office in a downtown strip mall after larger rallies to mark the three-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York. They had hoped to read a statement demanding Obama cut military spending by half and "dismantle our U.S. military empire ... so we can create jobs, balance the budget, meet our peoples' needs here and help the human community to heal our dying planet."

When they arrived, they found the doors locked.

"You wouldn't even have known this was a campaign office," said Julie Brown, an activist who recently moved to Des Moines.

To highlight its tenets, the protesters put up a hand-written sign on cardboard: "Obama's Former Headquarters."

Brown backed Obama four years ago ? "he was the lesser of two evils," she said ? but has since soured on the whole political system.

"We need a real leader who will put this country back to work," she said.

That anti-establishment flavor runs through the growing Occupy movement that has sprouted up across the country.

"This is not a Republican or a Democratic issue. This is about the whole system being against us. The corporate elites own all of the politicians and they set the agenda," Cordaro said. "What we are doing here is trying to win back our bought-and-sold political empire. We need to dismantle it because there is no difference between George Bush and Obama."

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt declined to comment.

U.S. proposal links Palestinian aid to halting U.N. push (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Congress would allow American economic aid to the Palestinians to continue next year so long as Palestine is not admitted as a state to any more United Nations organizations, under a proposal released on Thursday.

The measure pending before lawmakers would appear to give the Palestinians a pass on the U.N. organization they have already joined -- the United Nations Educational, Scientific and cultural Organization (UNESCO).

It also says that the Palestinian mission in Washington can remain open so long as Palestine is not admitted to a single additional United Nations entity.

The proposed spending plan was released by congressional Republicans, who say it was agreed between Republican and Democratic appropriators as a spending plan for fiscal 2012. Their agreement has until now been kept secret.

It was unclear how soon a vote would be held, or whether details of the plan would change. Republicans are pushing for a vote as soon as possible.

The plan does not specify any particular amount of aid for the Palestinians for fiscal 2012, apparently leaving it to the Obama administration to set the level in consultation with Congress.

"The bottom line is that U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority can continue, which is good news," said Dylan Williams, director of government affairs at J Street, a liberal advocacy group in Washington that says a two-state solution is essential to Israel's survival.

J Street argues that continuing U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank benefits Israel's security. "That is because the alternative to the Palestinian Authority being able to assist Israel in maintaining order, and provide basic services to the Palestinians, is for extremist groups like Hamas to deliberately destroy that order and take control of the West Bank," Williams told Reuters.

The Anti-Defamation League's national director Abraham Foxman said he thought the proposed restrictions on aid to the Palestinian were "fine," because they were prospective, not retrospective.

"It does not punish them (the Palestinians) for what they did" in seeking membership at UNESCO, he told Reuters. But the language makes clear that "if you act on a similar fashion from now on, there will be consequences" from the United States.

The Palestinians' campaign to gain recognition as a state at the United Nations and its organizations has upset Israel and its main ally, the United States, who say only a peace treaty can establish a universally recognized Palestinian state.

But the Palestinians pushed ahead and won admission to UNESCO in October, a move that prompted the United States to cut off funding to that agency. U.S. lawmakers also responded by holding up millions of dollars of aid already appropriated in 2011 for the Palestinians but not yet spent.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who hoisted the Palestinian flag at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on Tuesday, has said the Palestinians plan to apply to 16 other international organizations for membership.

The fiscal 2012 spending plan says that no U.S. economic aid can go to the Palestinians "if the Palestinians obtain, after the date of enactment of this act, the same standing as member states or full membership as a state in the United Nations or any specialized agency thereof, outside an agreement negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians."

It would allow Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to waive the restriction if she can certify to lawmakers that this would be in U.S. national security interests, and report to them on how continuing the U.S. aid would further Middle East peace.

The leader of another prominent American Jewish group, the American Jewish Committee, offered a mixed review of the proposal.

"On the one hand, we understand the sentiment in Congress on sending a clear message that any unilateral act will have immediate and direct consequences for Palestinian aid. On the other hand, it is important that any such decision not prove counterproductive regarding the balance of forces in Palestinian society, nor should it negatively affect security cooperation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority," AJC Executive Director David Harris told Reuters.

Last year Congress appropriated $400 million in economic aid and $150 million in security aid to the Palestinians. Representative Kay Granger, a Republican, still has a hold on $138 million of the 2011 economic aid because of the Palestinian push for recognition at the United Nations. She is the chairwoman of the House subcommittee on foreign aid.

Venezuela honors Simon Bolivar with new coffin (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez paid tribute to 19th century independence leader Simon Bolivar on Saturday by unveiling a new coffin containing Bolivar's remains and adorned with gold, pearls and diamonds.

Soldiers lifted a flag from the mahogany coffin during a ceremony marking the anniversary of Bolivar's death in 1830. Bolivar is both a national hero in Venezuela and the namesake of Chavez's Bolivarian Revolution political movement.

"You live on in us," Chavez said in a speech, standing next to the coffin. "As the years pass, you will be more alive, father Bolivar."

Officials have said Chavez's government is spending 119 million bolivars ($27.7 million) to build a new mausoleum to house Bolivar's remains. The mausoleum is to have a soaring roof, and a metal framework has been partly erected behind the National Pantheon, where Bolivar's remains have long been entombed.

Chavez oversaw the exhumation of Bolivar's remains last year, seeking to confirm his idol's identity and investigate a theory that Bolivar could have been killed. Researchers confirmed Bolivar's identity through DNA tests but were unable to pin down the cause of his death.

The new coffin bears golden stars and the national seal, as well as Bolivar's initials and golden laurels. An announcer said the decorations on the coffin include diamonds and pearls from Venezuela.

Chavez has made Bolivar a central symbol throughout his nearly 13-year-old presidency. He often speaks below a portrait of Bolivar. In 1999, Chavez promoted the approval of a new constitution that changed the country's name to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

TUF 14 openers: Delorme surprises Ferguson with rapid third-round finish, Albert and Siler also winners

TUF 14 openers: Delorme surprises Ferguson with rapid third-round finish, Albert and Siler also winners

LAS VEGAS - Roland Delorme has some pretty nasty jiu-jitsu. It took a while to pay off, but when Josh Ferguson got rocked in the third, Delorme ran roughshod over him. He got the finish at 0:22 of the final round via rear-naked choke in fight No. 3 of the night on the Season 14 "Ultimate Fighter Finale" undercard.

Ferguson, a strong puncher, had a lot of steam taken away in the first when Delorme caught him in a triangle choke predicament. The 5-foot-5 Ferguson used a ton of energy to avoid tapping out as he struggled for nearly two minutes. The second round was basically even with Ferguson scoring a takedown and neither fighter landing any of significance on the feet.

The third opened with Ferguson moving forward and getting nailed with a hard jab. It didn't look like much, but Ferguson went down and looked stunned. He jumped forward from his knees to try and grab Delorme's leg. The Canadian threw him to the side and jumped on his back. In a split second, he turned it over, locked on the choke and trapped Ferguson's right arm. He was helpless and had to tap.

Siler uses Thai clinch to bust up Clopton

Steven Siler had a height advantage and he used it tonight against Josh Clopton.

Giving away four inches, Clopton couldn't stay out of or free himself from Siler's constant efforts to lock on a Thai clinch. Siler's big knees allowed him to crush Clopton's nose, get the blood flowing and score with the judges on his way to a unanimous decision win, 29-28 on all three scorecards, in fight No. 2 of the night at the TUF 14 Finale.

"The win feels great. ?That was a hard hard fight for sure. He took a beating, I thought he'd go down but he kept coming. I started off slow, I was a little bothered by that but once I got it going, I got into a groove and I think I finished off really well," said Siler.

Siler's fighting style isn't pretty, but he likes to brawl. His size was simply too much for the diminutive Clopton. You don't often see high level fighters dominated for minutes at a time in the Thai clinch (in standing position, hands locked together behind the opponent's head), but that's exactly what happened to Clopton. He blocked a lot of the knees coming from Siler, but way too many got through.

By the middle of the second, Clopton's face was a bloody mess and he was having trouble breathing.

It was an accomplishment just to make it to the TUF 14 Finale for Siler. In the featherweight round of 16, he was matched up against Micah Miller, one of the pre-show favorites. Siler (19-9, 1-0 UFC) pulled the massive upset and went on to lose to eventual finalist Diego Brandao in just 30 seconds in the next round.

"You know The Ultimate Fighter was the best thing that ever happened to me. I appreciate everyone who got me involved in the show. I wouldn't change it for the world," said Siler.

Brimage lands heavier shots in decision win over Bass

Marcus Brimage can slug with the best of them so he was a little surprised that Stephen Bass chose to duke it out. Bass didn't leave on a stretcher, but he didn't land enough shots to counter the nasty kicking game of Brimage. Brimage scored a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

"The game plan didn't go like I wanted to. Stephen was able to utilize his angles as well but it ended up being a good fight. I'm not ecstatic about the outcome but I'm very grateful," Brimage said. "This has been a crazy experience, almost better than sex, that's the only way to describe it."

Brimage found a home for his left hand throughout the fight, but never landed one that? knocked Bass down. His biggest shots came on inside leg kicks. Several of them whipped Bass' leg into the air. One outside leg kick actually dropped Bass in the second.

TUF 14 openers: Delorme surprises Ferguson with rapid third-round finish, Albert and Siler also winners

Albert runs through Pague with quick first-round TKO

John Albert and Dustin Pague went for broke from the opening seconds of the TUF 14 Finale bout. Albert landed the first big shot and it spelled doom for Pague.

After he landed seven unanswered rapid fire shots to the downed fighter, Albert forced referee Herb Dean to save Pague at the 1:22 mark of the first round.

"It's the best feeling in the world, I didn't know whether to cry or scream. I honestly thought it was going to be a three-round war," said Albert.

Pague, one of the strongest strikers on the show, wanted to slug it out and Albert, who's more of a ground specialist, stood with him. An Albert left stunned Pague and a right hook buckled his legs then dropped him. On the ground, Albert showed some brilliance by securing Pague's right arm and trapping it across his face. With his free right hand, Albert pounded away. When Dean saved Pague, the stunned fighter turned to trying to fight the ref. His head had clearly been scrambled in taking dozens of shots to the arm and dome.

"He is an amazing kick boxer and I was going to try to dictate the fight but I didn't think I hit that hard. ?I want to fight Dominick Cruz next, but I'll do whatever the UFC says. ?I'll fight next week, I'm ready. I feel good," said Albert.

Caraway abuses Neace on the ground for choke victory

Bryan Caraway still has to overcome that confidence bugaboo, but when he's feeling good and on his game, he's a pretty tough fighter at featherweight.

The Team Alpha Male camper opened tonight's card with an easy win over Dustin Neace.

In the first and second, Caraway settled down by trading hands with Neace. As soon as he decided it was time to go to the ground, it did.

Caraway (16-5, 1-0 UFC) scored a double-leg takedown with 2:45 left in the first and controlled Neace on the mat for the remainder of the round. With 2:33 left in the second, he did the same. This time, Caraway quickly transitioned to take Neace's back. Caraway slapped on the rear-naked and it took about four seconds for Neace to bail on the fight and submit.

"It went well, it was different, a little strange because he is one of my main training partners on the show, became pretty good friends with him, so it didn't feel quite the same as a real fight," Caraway said. "But it was good, I got the W, that's what matters. It feels good to win. It's been a crazy up and down experience but all for the better. ?I'm excited for my future."

This wasn't Caraway's Zuffa debut. He fought twice for the WEC losing to Fredson Paixao and Mark Hominick. His only other losses have come against solid featherweights like Wilson Reis, Ian Loveland and John Gunderson.
