Split-finger or HGH? Trial debates Clemens career

(AP) ? Knowledgeable baseball fans can argue all day whether it was the split-finger fastball ? and not performance-enhancing drugs ? that kept Roger Clemens on top of his game well into his 30s and beyond. His lawyers are trying to make that point at a trial where basic terms such as "Fenway Park" and "foul pole" require an explanation for a jury of nonfans.

Former journeyman catcher Charlie O'Brien was on the stand Wednesday for the defense at the Clemens perjury trial. He was fuzzy about lots of details, couldn't come up with a real name for the player known as "El Duque" and totally dissed the 1997 Toronto Blue Jays medical staff. But there was no doubt in his mind about two things: Clemens was not a cheater, and the weapon Clemens mastered at age 34 was the chief reason the 11-time All-Star was able to pitch for another decade.

"That pitch right there ? the split-finger fastball," O'Brien said.

O'Brien caught Clemens' games for much of the 1997 Blue Jays season, a crucial time period as prosecutors attempt to prove that Clemens lied when he told Congress in 2008 that he never took steroids and human growth hormone. After being discarded following 13 seasons with the Boston Red Sox ? Boston's then-general manager, Dan Duquette, said at the time that Clemens was in the "twilight" of his career ? a motivated Clemens arrived in Toronto and promptly won back-to-back Cy Young Awards in 1997-98.

But it was also in 1998 that Clemens met strength coach Brian McNamee, who says he injected the pitcher with steroids and HGH over the following three years and testified that he had the impression the Clemens had used steroids previously. The government used its cross-examination of witnesses Wednesday to reinforce its claim that Clemens turned to performance-enhancing drugs to help his aging body recover more quickly during the physically demanding major league seasons.

Also on the stand was Darrin Fletcher, Clemens' catcher from the 1998 Blue Jays season. Fletcher testified that he didn't see Clemens at a pool party at teammate Jose Canseco's house in Florida in June of that season, but Fletcher also said he left the party around 1:30 p.m. A government witness recalled seeing Clemens at the party later in the day. One of the lesser charges against Clemens is that he lied when he told Congress that he wasn't at the party at all.

In front of a jury consisting mostly of people who know little about baseball, Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin went for a visual effect to explain how the split-finger revolutionized Clemens' game, striking a pose as a left-handed hitter in front of O'Brien, who pantomimed the grip of a baseball while seated in the witness chair.

"It just totally changed how he could approach each hitter," O'Brien said.

O'Brien was even a better witness for the defense during cross-examination, when he volunteered that Clemens would refuse to throw scuffed baseballs because Clemens considered it "cheating." He said he once approached Clemens on the mound during a game with a scuffed ball and said, "This is a great ball to use." He said Clemens responded: "I don't need that."

"I don't think he'd cheat," O'Brien said.

"Would Roger Clemens do anything to cheat in baseball?" Hardin asked during the defense's following-up questioning. "No sir," O'Brien said.

O'Brien also said he would sometimes see multiple needles of vitamin B12 "lined up ready to go" in the Toronto clubhouse, supporting another statement made by Clemens that the government has sought to disprove.

As a sidelight, O'Brien said the Blue Jays' medical services at the time were "very poor" and that former Blue Jays head athletic trainer Tommy Craig was a nice guy but "might have been one of the worst trainers." O'Brien also had trouble recognizing Clemens in a Blue Jays team photo and couldn't explain to the jury the identity of the former New York Yankees pitcher known widely as El Duque. "What's his name, Roger?" O'Brien blurted out toward the defense table. Clemens didn't give the answer that baseball fans already know: Orlando Hernandez.

Fletcher was nearly as entertaining as he gave up some of Clemens' trade secrets as a pitcher. Clemens, for example, would purse his lips on the mound to ask for curveballs.

"You're not making a comeback any time are you, Roger?" Fletcher said. "I'm not giving anything away, am I?" Clemens laughed.

Fletcher caused laughter again when asked about the pool party. Fletcher indicated it would have left an impression if he had seen Clemens.

"I've always wanted to see Roger in a bathing suit," he said.

The day began with more testimony from Todd Howey, one of Clemens' high school teammates. Then came former Red Sox assistant general manager Steven August. Both spoke glowingly of Clemens' talent and work ethic, but the pace was again painfully slow ? even for a trial now in its seventh week. Among the rudimentary baseball terms explained to the jury: fungo bat, platoon player, won-loss record and the 1994 players' strike.

Prosecutor Gil Guerrero, perhaps out of exasperation with all of the testimonials that Clemens was receiving, at one point told August: "You understand he's not on trial for how great he was in baseball."

Computer virus briefly hits Iran's oil industry

(AP) ? Iran's key oil industry was briefly affected by the powerful computer virus known as "Flame" that has unprecedented data-snatching capabilities and can eavesdrop on computer users, a senior Iranian military official said Wednesday.

The comment is the first direct link between the emergence of the new malware and an attack inside a highly sensitive computer system in Iran, which counts on oil revenue for 80 percent of its income. The full extent of last month's disruptions has not been given, but Iran was forced to cut Internet links to the country's main oil export terminal presumably to try to contain the virus.

It would be the latest high-profile virus to penetrate Iran's computer defenses in the past two years, boosting speculation that Israeli programmers could have struck again.

Experts see technological links between Flame and the highly focused Stuxnet virus, which was tailored to disrupt Iran's nuclear centrifuges in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Gholam Reza Jalali, who heads an Iranian military unit in charge of fighting sabotage, claimed that Iranian experts had detected and defeated the "Flame" virus. He told state radio that the oil industry was the only governmental body seriously affected and that all data that had been lost were retrieved.

"This virus penetrated some fields. One of them was the oil sector. Fortunately, we detected and controlled this single incident," Jalali said. "We could also retrieve the information that was lost."

Jalali said there has been no report of any other governmental agency being affected by the virus.

Iran's government-run Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center has said the highly sophisticated Flame virus appeared linked to espionage, but cited no specific country or source. International suspicion, however, immediately fell on Iran's archfoe Israel.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the cyberattack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame on Tuesday. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Ali Hakim Javadi, Iran's deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying Wednesday that Iranian experts have already produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from computers.

The Computer Center "has produced an anti-virus capable of detecting and removing the Flame for the first time in the world," IRNA quoted Javadi as saying. "The anti-virus software was delivered to selected organizations in early May."

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the Flame virus is unprecedented in size and complexity.

Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government has fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Aftana.ir, a government-run website, said the Flame has been active since 2010, the same year when a virus known as Stuxnet disrupted controls of some nuclear centrifuges and some other industrial sites in Iran.

Iran has acknowledged that Stuxnet affected a limited number of its centrifuges ? a key component in the production of nuclear fuel ? at its main uranium enrichment facility in the central city of Natanz. But Tehran has said its scientists discovered and neutralized the malware before it could cause serious damage.

Iran says is has previously discovered one more espionage virus, Duqu, but that the malware did no harm Iran's nuclear or industrial sites. Jalali said Flame is the third.

Iran says Stuxnet and other computer virus attacks are part of a concerted campaign by Israel, the U.S. and their allies to undermine its nuclear program and economy.

Stealing sound | Feature | Life & Times - The Lifestyle Newspaper ...

Nepalese music industry has never been far from controversies. As of now, the entire industry?artists and producers alike?are facing a state of recession that has traumatized most of the stakeholders in this field. Standing tall amongst all of the controversial issues in Nepal?s music field is?music piracy.

Modern advents in entertainment sector have been changing the face of recording, producing and composing music. In Nepal, usage of cassette players is still prevalent. But we cannot deny the fact that the introduction of CRBT downloads (via telecom services) and online payment systems have been widely popular amongst majority of Nepalese consumers. This has been a surplus to the pre-existing royalty schemes and channelized purchase of artists? albums but the market lacks a strong government Act to control music piracy from every level.

music.jpgTalking about advances in technology, the arrival of multimedia phones and Bluetooth have been revolutionary?making the old and somewhat nostalgic music players and devices less and less visible. Furthermore, we can see various new models of music players in the market that can play music from the user?s pen drive by inserting it into a device?s USB inputs. This is applicable to laptops and computers too as we know. These technological simplicity do not require any permission or any other form of copyright issues as well. Hence, they have been a great source for music?s piracy.

Downloading and quick sharing from worldwide web have also been jabbing in the heart of true listeners. As the resources are lesser, and the market retail price is higher?an individual is bound use the cost effective internet, which basically provides everything for free! It?s a costing saving option for someone living in a third world nation. Expecting a person to buy an authentic factory release compared to an easy option is near to zero. Yes, a few websites like muncha.com and fursad.com are trying to legalize online music selling in Nepal. There are also various international websites and applications like iTunes where some of the Nepali artists? album have been displayed for online purchase. But the reality of online music selling and buying is still a doubtful issue for Nepalese music industry. ?With the increasing interest of the public towards illegal music downloads, the effort to tame their habits are becoming quite impossible nowadays?, says Jems Pradhan, celebrated singer and well-known music arranger and composer.

Due to the widespread habit of illegal music copying in public, the artists and record companies are experiencing a cold war between themselves. The record labels are finding it difficult and are skeptical when it comes to investing their money for an artist?s album since they have been become quite unsure of the returns. ?The problem with music?s piracy in Nepal is directly related to the common notion of public. A lot of them take music for granted without realizing that it is an outcome of someone?s hard work, creativity and investment?, says Nabin K. Bhattarai, a singer who has redefined pop music in Nepal.

music2.jpgLike the singer said, we are really lacking behind in understanding good music. It is also essential to note that pirated music will not have the required sound quality that the original musical tracks beheld. Despite this fact, a lot of us are ignoring the fact that quality associated with music depends upon the musical knowledge of artists, sound engineers at recording studios and our choice for music as well.

Whensome of the individuals I interviewed mentioned that piracy has both positive as well as negative aspects; I got a writer?s block for a while because their perception was indeed logical. I remembered how singer Bryan Adams sold so many tickets when he performed in Kathmandu. Had it not been for the selling of his pirated CDs in our country, then almost the entire mass of Nepali audience present at his concert would not have known what his music was like!

Controversies abound, the case of music piracy is indeed a serious issue. With the rise of electronic culture, it is rather doubtful whether a significant number of people would attend concerts and watch their favorite artists perform live in the near future. Therefore it would be wise decision to control this mayhem before it is too late.

VOX POP

nabin_k_bhattrai.jpgNabin K. Bhattarai, Famous Nepali pop singer
?If we are to stop music piracy, then the only way is to make the public conscious about its negative impact. Furthermore, more than 90% of record companies are distributing music solely for the purpose of business rather than promoting it as an important form of art. An ideal record company owner should have a fair knowledge of music and its related genre before embarking into the business of selling it?.

james_pradhan.jpgJems Pradhan, Singer/Music arranger/Composer

?It is a fact that music piracy is a major problem in the worldwide context. As with the case of Nepal, it is evident that the CD selling shops have been converted into mobile shops where most of the people are downloading songs of artists/musicians illegally. Hence, this has created a lack of a good royalty scheme for artists in our country. Therefore people should be encouraged to buy the music of their favorite artists in a legal way?.

rajan_isan.jpgRajan Ishan,Music Arranger/Video Director
?The efforts to stop music piracy would be rather impossible because it is true that artists themselves are not acting strongly to prevent it. Using electronic medium has really hampered music business globally. Unless the Nepalese community decides to buy an artist?s album by going to a CD shop or paying for music, the culture of respecting music will definitely take some time?.

pravin_shrestha.jpgPravin Shrestha, Music video Director/Editor Mokshya Graphics
?Music piracy has become a major problem for producers and artists worldwide. Spreading awareness in public regarding its consequences is the only way to control it. Artists should rather opt for putting up their music through legalized distribution sources such as CRBT downloads and the content of their album should be worth people?s expenditures on buying their music. Moreover, record companies should adopt merchandising themes to promote the artists, which really lacks in Nepal?.

jagat_bohora.jpgJagat Bohara, Manager, Z-Entertainment (Record Company)

?If you look at the market, you would be rather surprised to know that free distribution of music has been a good option for new artists who would want to promote themselves and get established in the music industry! But this is indeed harmful for senior artists who are making a living out their music. Record companies like us are trying to set new trends to make people aware about such issues as we are also incorporating various electronic media to sell an artist?s album?.

sunit_kansakar.jpgSunitKansakar, Chief Sound Engineer (Rec Records)
Guitar Instructor (Nepal Sangeet Vidyalaya) Guitarist: Looza

?The effort to stop music piracy would be a vague effort in today?s context since a lot of people tend to listen to music for free. But if people really want to show respect to their favorite artists, then going to their concerts and paying for tickets will really help musicians. The problem here in Nepal is that lot of people don?t see music as a profession. People must learn to respect musicians for who they truly are?.

The Auto Loan Purchase Contract - Bad Credit Auto Loans

Even consumers with bad credit will want to go over this check off list before signing the sales contract

Checking it over

Even for credit-challenged consumers it?s very important to know what to look for before signing the documents for a car loan.

Here at Auto Credit Express, where we?ve spent the last two decades helping car buyers with less than perfect credit, we?ve seen what can happen if a buyer isn?t paying attention. It?s also one reason we created our website ? so that people with low credit scores can understand the issues surrounding no credit auto loans that include today?s topic, the purchase contract.

Purchase contracts

When you sign a finance contract you?re agreeing to all the terms it contains. Since most states have no ?cooling off? period, if you change your mind later you won?t be able to return the car.

This means that for your own peace of mind you need to pay attention to be sure the terms listed in the contract are those you agreed to, including:

??? ?Selling Price ? check to see this is correct. It should include the vehicle?s price plus tax, title and license fees. The dealer may also charge a documentation fee to process the paperwork. These fees should be broken out as to the type and amount for each.
??? ?Amount Financed ? this is the amount that you?ll be financing. It should equal the selling price less the cash down payment, rebates and/or trade equity.
??? ?Contract Term ?the length of the contract in months should reflect the loan term you agreed to.
??? ?Interest Rate ? this is the interest rate you?ll be changed. It should match the interest rate you were quoted.
??? ?Monthly Payment ? this is the amount you?ll be required to pay each month over the contract term. It should match the payment you agreed to.

If you disagree with any of the above items or anything else contained in the finance contract you have the right to walk away instead of signing it. If you sign the documents the dealer is required to give you a copy of every one you signed. Before you leave, be sure the dealer has also signed your copies, as well.

The Bottom Line

You should be paying as much attention to the sale and finance documents as you did to the other aspects of the sale. Signing a document without first checking it means you?re as much to blame as anyone. By taking a few extra minutes at this time you could save yourself a lot of trouble later on.

Another suggestion we have is that if you have problems with your car credit, Auto Credit Express can assist you in finding a dealer for your best chance at an auto loan approval.

So if you?re ready to reestablish your auto credit, you can begin now by filling out our online car loans application.

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact

Image

The wait for the Sony Xperia Ion in the US has been a long one, but that summer release feels considerably closer now that the Android flagship has swung by the FCC. As we'd hope, the Ion is passing through in full AT&T regalia, carrying the 700MHz and 1,700MHz 4G LTE bands it needs to run on Big Blue -- albeit with a legacy Sony Ericsson label. Along with the expected 850MHz and 1,900MHz HSPA 3G frequencies, we're also seeing an odd instance of 1,700MHz 3G that would normally be reserved for T-Mobile. Given that there isn't matching 2,100MHz support, we're more inclined to see the 1,700MHz block as related to AT&T spectrum refarming or other, more practical purposes than as a ghost of attempted mergers past. An FCC approval still doesn't provide any direct clues as to the release date, although removing that one major hurdle gives AT&T the option of launching sooner in the summer rather than later.

Sony Xperia Ion hits FCC with AT&T LTE intact originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 May 2012 17:10:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

USC Dornsife Scientific Diving: Diving into Apra Harbor s Western Shoals and CB Junkyard

By Santiago Fernandez-Barrera

Drenched by the torrential rains of Guam as a tropical depression petered out to the northwest, my classmates and I loaded up the dive boat with gear as we prepared for our first set of dives since leaving Catalina Island. Suddenly, the clouds cleared and we set off through the mangrove forests into Apra Harbor.

Our destinations for the day were Western Shoals Reef and SeaBee Junkyard, where we would be making our first coral reef dive and practicing our data collection methods for use on Palau. Out in the distance, on the south side of the harbor, I could see the naval base that is one of the principal uses of Apra Harbor. Although it already covers a large area, I had to remind myself that the military footprint on Apra Harbor might increase still more if the proposed carrier berthing goes through.

Pulling myself back into the task at hand I prepared for our dive at Western Shoals. After a dive briefing by USC Dornsife Dive Safety Officer Gerry Smith, we put on an unusually light amount of gear, looked out at the horizon and stepped off the swim step, unprepared for the sight that awaited us.

Unusually free without the clumsiness of a 7-mm wetsuit, I descending onto the reef below. Thousands of coral heads fanned out forming tiny skyscrapers for multicolored fish to swim between.

I followed my dive buddy and professor, Dave Ginsburg, deeper along the reef to take a closer look at the marine environment below. Covering a majority of the reef, Porites coral takes on several forms, creating a multilayered landscape speckled with brightly colored fish, sponges and soft corals.

After a few meters Dave turned to me and pointed at his ears and then at a peculiar blue mantle emerging from the coral. I immediately recognized that he was pointing at a massive elephant ear sponge, a species found in Guam only in Apra Harbor. As I considered the sponge I realized that dredging a nearby reef for the proposed carrier berthing would very likely cover this area with sediment and threaten not only sponges but other reef species as well.

Swimming forward, Dave began to wave his fingers out in front of him at a school of butterfly fish. Puzzled I followed suit and was amazed to see them school around us, curiously inspecting our fingers. My classmates soon caught on and before we knew it we were surrounded by dozens of other curious little fish.

Still mesmerized by the sight below I slowly ascended, readying myself for the next dive. Above water we were reminded that this area hosts an active military site by a passing nuclear submarine being escorted back to the naval base. We headed to SeaBee Junkyard to do our first transact tape survey in Micronesia.

Located next the Glass Breakwater, SeaBee Junkyard is characterized by an assortment of discarded WW II relics that are sometimes overgrown with marine life. Due to its shallow depth and sandy bottom, this was the chosen location to practice our data collection techniques. Tying off our transect tape to a bulldozer dropped here 67 years ago, my group and I headed out at 330 degrees to begin our survey of the area.

Surveying both fish and invertebrates we were able to identify the indicator species that we had so diligently memorized prior to our arrival in Guam. Having finished our survey and rolling up our transact tape we were free to swim around and inspect the junk dropped by the military so long ago.

I was able to collect a little souvenir, a 1945 Coca Cola bottle. Exhausted after a long day of diving we readied ourselves for the next part of our journey through Micronesia. Apra Harbor was just a taste of what?s to come and a firm reminder of the importance of our work in the field.

About the Author: Santiago Fernandez-Barrera is a junior pursuing a BS in Environmental Studies in the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. He hopes to return to his home country of Mexico and promote environmentally sustainable business practices.

Editor?s note: Scientific Research Diving at USC Dornsife is offered as part of an experiential summer program offered to undergraduate students of the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. Syria denies responsibility for attack killing 90

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? The Syrian government on Sunday denied responsibility for killings in a string of villages that left more than 90 people dead, blaming the killings on "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" who also attacked soldiers in the area.

Friday's assault on the central area of Houla was one of the bloodiest single events in Syria's 15-month-old uprising, and gruesome images of dozens of children killed in the attacks prompted a wave of international outrage.

The U.N. said 32 children under the age of 10 were among the dead and issued a statement appearing to hold the Syrian regime responsible. Persistent violence has cast doubt about the future of international efforts to halt 14 months of bloodshed between the regime and forces fighting against it.

The U.N. Security Council convened an emergency session for late Sunday to discuss the killing. Diplomats said Russia blocked a strong statement condemning the killing, insisting on a briefing from the head of the observer mission first.

Activists from Houla said Saturday that regime forces had peppered the area with mortar shells after large demonstrations against the regime on Friday. That evening, they said, pro-regime fighters known as shabiha stormed the villages, gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi disputed those accounts, saying Syria is being subjected to a "tsunami of lies."

"We categorically deny the responsibility of government forces for the massacre," Makdissi said Sunday during a news conference in Damascus.

Giving the regime's version of events, Makdissi said "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen carrying machine guns, mortars and anti-tank missiles" launched a simultaneous attack against five army positions from several locations, starting about 2 p.m. and continuing for nine hours. Three soldiers were killed and 16 were wounded, he said.

"There were no Syrian tanks or artillery in the vicinity" of Houla, Makdissi said. He said that gunmen used anti-tank missiles and "Syrian troops retaliated in defense of their positions."

"Children, women and other innocent people were killed in their homes, and this is not what the Syrian army does," Makdissi said. "The method of killing was brutal."

Makdissi said a committee was set up to investigate the attack, and results should be out within three days. He added that Kofi Annan, the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy, will fly to Syria on Monday.

But a senior Arab League official said Syria has denied permission for Annan's deputy to travel to Damascus. Syria insisted the decision against former Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasser al-Kidwa was not personal, but rather because it did not want to deal with the Arab League, the official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

The Houla attacks sparked outrage from American and other international leaders, and renewed concerns about the relevance of a 6-week-old international peace plan that has not stopped almost daily violence. The U.N. put the death toll weeks ago at more than 9,000. Hundreds have been killed since.

U.N. observers, among more than 250 who were dispatched in recent weeks to try to salvage the cease-fire plan, found spent artillery and tank shells at the site Saturday ? a finding that points toward the government's heavily armed mechanized units.

On Sunday, Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said he would summon Syria's most senior diplomat in the U.K. on Monday so the Foreign Office's political director could "make clear our condemnation of the Syrian regime's actions."

Syria says the Arab League has become a tool of the West. The group suspended Syria's membership and approved sanctions against it late last year.

Kuwait, which currently heads the 22-member Cairo-based Arab League, announced it is calling for an Arab ministerial meeting that aims to "take steps to put an end to the oppressive practices against the Syrian people."

Late Saturday, Foreign Minister Sheik Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates condemned the killings in Houla and called for an urgent meeting of the Arab League.

Activists said government troops shelled residential areas in other areas of central Syria on Sunday.

The shelling hit neighborhoods in the central city of Hama and the rebel-held town of Rastan north of Homs, the Local Coordination Committees and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The two groups also reported clashes between troops and rebels in Hama, in the Damascus suburb of Harasta and in the capital's central Midan district. They said a bomb struck a security vehicle in the capital's upscale district of Mazzeh, near a military airport, according to the LCC.

The Observatory said the vehicle bombing caused casualties but did not have further details.

Damascus is tightly controlled by regime forces but has been hit by a wave of bomb blasts over recent months that killed scores of people. Most of the blasts have targeted Syrian security agencies.

CIA remembers those lost in covert operations

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The CIA is remembering those lost in the hidden, often dangerous world of espionage, adding a new star to the intelligence agency's memorial wall and more than a dozen names to its hallowed Book of Honor.

The new star carved into the wall is for Jeffrey Patneau, a young officer killed in a car crash in Yemen in September 2008.

"Jeff proved that he had boundless talent, courage and innovativeness to offer to our country in its fight against terrorism," said CIA Director David Petraeus at a private ceremony at CIA headquarters this past week.

Petraeus' tribute was the first public identification of Patneau. The stars on the memorial wall at headquarters in Langley, Va., bear no names.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, was the site of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors. Patneau was part of the fight against militants in the country in a tense year in which the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa was attacked.

With the addition of the star for Patneau, the wall now commemorates the lives of 103 Americans who died in service of the CIA, "never for acclaim, always for country," Petraeus said at the annual event attended by hundreds of employees and family members of those lost. The rememberance came just days ahead of Memorial Day, when the nation remembers its military veterans and those who died in war.

The addition of 15 names to the CIA's Book of Honor means family members can openly acknowledge where their loved ones worked when they died.

Leslianne Shedd was lost when hijackers forced down her plane over the Indian Ocean, killing more than 125 people.

"Everybody who was on the plane with her who survived said she was not at all scared," her sister, Corinne Collie, told The Associated Press on Saturday. "She was saying it's all going to be okay, holding the hand of the person sitting next to her."

Collie says the agency approached her family a year ago, saying it was now possible to acknowledge her death ? likely meaning the cases she had worked on had been wrapped up, or staff she worked with had either retired or were no longer in harm's way. Collie said being able to share what her sister did has been a relief.

"To lose a sister and not be able to talk about the full picture of who she was has been hard," said Collie of Tacoma, Wash.

"The biggest relief is my parents ... get to acknowledge and brag about her, especially my dad," she said.

Like Shedd, most of those honored were killed in the clandestine war on terrorism, the list reading like a grim roll call of terrorist acts of the last three decades. Matthew Gannon was among the victims of the December 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Molly Hardy was killed in the August 1998 suicide bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. She urged others to take cover as she was hit by the blast from an al-Qaida car bomb.

Jacqueline Van Landingham was killed in a terrorist attack in Pakistan in 1995. The CIA did not disclose how she died.

CIA officers face constant threat in Pakistan, hunting and hunted by the Taliban and al-Qaida. They often play a cat-and-mouse game with Pakistan's intelligence service, sometimes able to work with them and sometimes forced to work around them to gather intelligence on al-Qaida's militant diaspora. U.S. officials say it gets support from elements of the Pakistani government.

Five of those remembered were victims of the April 1983 suicide bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people.

Among the CIA officers lost was Phyliss Nancy Faraci, "one of the last four Americans evacuated from the Mekong Delta when Saigon fell" during the Vietnam War, according to CIA spokesman Todd Ebitz. Faraci had volunteered to work in war-torn Beirut.

Deborah Hixon, a young officer fluent in French who volunteered for a temporary posting there, also died in the attack. Frank Johnston was a 25-year agency veteran who had accepted the assignment though he was close to retirement.

Paramilitary officer James Lewis, who had joined the CIA after his military career, and his wife, Monique Lewis, also were killed. Lewis was "only hours into her first day as an Agency officer when the bomber struck," Ebitz said.

Canon Vixia HF R300

With video-capable phones and cameras, consumer camcorders?are in a tough spot when it comes to balancing price and usefulness. The Canon Vixia HF M50?($649.99, 3 stars) captures great video, but at that price, you might as well get a high-end digital camera that also takes great still images. The Canon Vixia HF R300 ($349.99 direct) falls in the lower range of the company's consumer camcorder line, but offers a far more compelling combination of performance and value. It lacks some of the low-light prowess found in the M50, but takes the advantage with a wider angle lens and 32x optical zoom. The smaller sensor still produces some great looking high-definition video, making the R300 a solid choice for the weekend videographer looking for a no-frills, easy-to-use standalone camcorder.

Design and Features
The R300 looks a lot like the higher-end M50, measuring 2.2 by 2.1 by 4.5 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 8.8 ounces. It feels a bit flimsier than the M50 (2.5 by 2.7 by 4.8 inches / 10.9 ounces), but is still comfortable to hold and shoot for long periods. The control layout is nearly identical on the R300 and M50, with a Record button on the right side, where your thumb naturally sits, and a zoom rocker on top, within reach of your index finger. In the LCD recess are Video Snap, Home, and Playback buttons, as well as a 3.5mm headphone and microphone jack, mini HDMI out, and mini USB out. There is no built-in memory, only a single slot for an SD, SDHC, or SDXC card. The lens cover is engaged and disengaged by a small switch to its right, which is less convenient than the automatic cover on the M50.?

All controls are accessed with the 3-inch touch-screen LCD. It definitely gives the R300 a clean and minimalist look, but I found navigating the touch menus to be a bit cumbersome. Focus, white balance, and exposure are all buried in touch menus, and getting precise control is too difficult. With this type of camcorder, however, I expect most users will stick to the fully automatic mode, which I found to be fast and accurate in most situations. The 230k-dot LCD is the same as the one found on the M50, and is still a bit too grainy and dim for bright outdoor light.

The R300 uses a smaller 1/4.85-inch HD CMOS sensor, but also packs a far more versatile lens. The 32x zoom lens features a 38.5-1232mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with an f/1.8-4.5 aperture, which is wider and longer than the M50's 10x zoom (43.4-436mm) with its f/1.8-3.0 aperture. Canon advertises a 51x zoom factor, using what it calls the Advanced Zoom feature, but really this is just a combination of optical and digital zoom.?

Performance and Conclusions
Though it lacks the "Pro" designation found on the M50, the R300 is a capable shooter, capturing crisp and clear high-definition video. You can choose from three shooting modes?Auto, Manual, and Cinema?with the latter simulating the look and frame rate of most film projects. Video format and quality can also be adjusted, with the highest setting, MXP, recording 1080i60 video in AVCHD format. Much like the M50, the R300 is limited to interlaced video as opposed to progressive, capturing 60 interlaced fields per second and encoding the video at 30 frames per second.

The resulting video is very similar to the M50, which is to say good, with sharp detail and fine textures. White balance is a bit less accurate with the R300, with colors skewing towards cooler hues. The smaller sensor means smaller pixels, which results in reduced low-light performance. The difference is most evident in the amount of image noise apparent in low-lighting situations. The M50 excelled, while the R300 showed noticeable grain in low-light. It didn't ruin the video by any means, but it is evident when playing back on large screen HDTVs.

Image stabilization is solid, helping steady shots at both the wide end and telephoto max. The 32x zoom is impressive, and could really come in handy if filming, say, a school play from the back row of a large auditorium. Obviously even powered image stabilization can only do so much, and when fully zoomed, video had the same dreamy wobble found on the M50, though it was a bit more noticeable on the R300. Autofocus was quick and accurate, and I actually encountered fewer instances where the focus would shift to the background inadvertently than on the M50. Audio quality was on par with the M50, with similar issues with picking up wind and other ambient room noises. And as with the M50, the R300 has a 3.5mm mic input for better audio capture with an external microphone.?

When compared with video captured by a point-and-shoot camera, like our Editors' Choice Canon PowerShot S100?($429.99, 4.5 stars), the R300's video lacked some of the saturation and vibrancy, but was able to achieve similar levels of detail and sharpness. The R300 does have an advantage in moving shots, like a slow pan, where the S100 turned in slightly choppy video. Still images, which are captured at 2-megapixel resolution, however, don't loook great on the R300, with too much image noise and loss of finer details.

The Canon Vixia HF R300 strikes a solid balance between performance, features, and price. At $349.99 it's less expensive than most digital cameras that shoot comparable video. It lacks the built-in memory, Wi-Fi, and low light performance of the M50, but also costs considerably less. A solid camera like the PowerShot S100 is more versatile, taking far better stills and capturing relatively sharp 1080p video. However, if you're sold on the traditional camcorder form-factor, the R300 is a solid, easy to use, and relatively affordable option for more casual shooters.

Beverly Hills subway approved after fiery films

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Flames, explosions, sophisticated soundtracks, slapstick comedy with harmonizing hillbillies.

What started as a typical municipal dispute over public transportation ended up getting a heavy dose of Hollywood.

When the drama ended, Los Angeles County transportation officials voted Thursday to send a subway route 70 feet under Beverly Hills High School, though a long legal fight likely looms in the dispute that spawned productions that in some ways overshadowed the policy and geology of the project.

One is a virtual disaster movie, produced by Beverly Hills parents against the project, that shows students walking to class paired with images of flames and explosions.

The other, a pro-subway satire called "The Hillfolks' Lament," suggests residents of the 90210 are backward-looking hicks who fear progress.

It was "Armageddon" vs. "The Beverly Hillbillies."

It was unclear if any of it swayed the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority that heard pleas for further studies and threats of lawsuits before voting 7-2 for the extension of the Purple Line.

The MTA approved one leg of the project last month but delayed the second and third phases while the board heard more about the potential dangers of the project.

The plan now awaits federal approval and inevitable legal challenges from Beverly Hills.

"We're going to exercise all of our rights," said Brian Goldberg, president of the Beverly Hills school board and a leader of subway opposition.

Before the vote, board members emphasized their previous findings that creating a tunnel under the high school to the proposed Century City station could be done safely and without disruption, despite some pockets of underground methane gas.

A video made by members of the Beverly Hills Parent Teacher Association titled "No Subway Under BHHS" takes a different view, to say the least.

It begins with ominous music and a sober narrator saying: "Methane gas, toxic chemicals and teenagers don't mix, but this dangerous combination is on the verge of exploding at Beverly Hills High, turning the school into a mega-disaster."

The line, spoken over images of students walking into the school, gives way to a huge blast that has drawn comparisons to images in "The Avengers" movie.

It continues with images and headlines from a huge 1985 methane explosion at a Los Angeles clothing store that left 23 people injured.

Zev Yaroslavsky, an MTA board member and county supervisor, decried what he called "the hysteria campaign" promoted by the video and similar public statements.

"Buildings aren't going to blow up," Yaroslavsky said. "This is not even a high methane zone."

The "Hillfolks' Lament," made in response by an anonymous group calling itself LAontheMove, gives the argument a comic turn, but its mocking tone is just as over-the-top.

It shows a man in overalls, accented with a preppy sweater tied around his shoulders, singing with bluegrass backing in front of Beverly Hills backdrops and featuring choruses such as "M-T-A, no Purple Line, we hill folk wanna stay stuck in 1959," and "don't make us into a tunnel-diggin' school kid-killin' place."

Opponents of the tunnel under the high school said they still want the subway to run through Beverly Hills but would like to see it travel a different route along Santa Monica Boulevard that avoids the campus.

The MTA said that route is too close to earthquake fault lines, and the station would be too far from heavily populated areas.

"The Hillfolks' Lament" takes on that proposal too, saying if the train is rerouted "no one'll use it, it'll never get dirty!"

Transportation officials did not appear to know who was behind the video, and The Associated Press could not locate anyone involved for comment.

Thursday's meeting included more of the dramatic statements that have marked the long-running debate.

Metro brought scientists, including seismologist Lucy Jones of the U.S. Geological Survey, to reiterate the position that the route under the school is safe and the alternative ill-advised.

After the testimony, county Supervisor Mike Antonovich, one of two board members who later voted no, called them "so-called experts that will behave like trained seals."

School board member Lisa Korbatov warned the transportation board, "you will not succeed and we will stop you at every turn."

If all continues to go well, by about 10 a.m. EDT, the craft will have moved to within 10 meters of the International Space Station. Space station flight engineer Don Petitt, the mission's grappler-in-chief, will use the station's Canadian-made robotic arm to grasp Dragon.

To watch the history-making event and listen to the play-by-play, point your Web browser to NASA-TV at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html.

Although the process of grappling and berthing looks to be fairly simple, it isn't, notes astronaut Catherine Coleman, who grappled the Japanese HTV on its second supply mission to the station in January 2011. She likens it to trying to pass something from one car to another ? when both are traveling at interstate speeds.

On orbit, it's a Grey Poupon moment at 17,500 miles per hour between one vehicle that weighs more than 1 million pounds and another weighing a tiny fraction of that. Still, Dragon can inflict a world of hurt on the station if something goes wrong. Hence the delicate touch Petitt must apply and the slow pace he'll use to pull Dragon to the station's docking port.

Flight controllers are trying to maintain a schedule that allows Dragon's capture and berthing to take place during the sunlit portions of the station's 90-minute orbits.
