Oculus Rift dev kits to ship in March 2013, orders fulfilled by mid-April

Oculus Rift dev kits to ship in March 2013, orders fulfilled by midApril

Were you one of the many folks to donate your hard-earned cash to the crazy folks developing the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset? Sadly, we've got some bad news for ya -- you won't be playing Doom 3: BFG Edition with your new headset any time this year, as the device isn't shipping to its Kickstarter backers until some time next March. Citing a variety of factors, the folks at Oculus say it's simply impossible to get the dev kits manufactured and shipped to all 7,500 backers within the previous time frame of "before 2012 ends." The company hopes to have all dev kit orders fulfilled by mid-April 2013.

Moreover, a handful of tech specs have changed on the OR since we last saw it, including a display change from 5.6-inch LCD to 1280 x 800 7-inch -- that's a lot of screen connected to your face! As such, the whole device is a bit heavier than before (by 30g). Additionally, previously off the shelf motion sensors were replaced with a custom one "that excels in VR-critical areas." Should you wish to get into all the (extremely) nitty gritty details, Oculus has a detailed Kickstarter update right here.

3 Calif men indicted in terror plot case

(AP) ? Three California men have been indicted on terrorism-related charges for allegedly plotting to kill Americans overseas.

An indictment filed Wednesday charges Ralph Deleon, Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales and Arifeen David Gojali with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. If convicted, they each could face up to 15 years in prison.

The three men were arrested earlier this month. Federal authorities say they planned to board a plane headed for Istanbul and eventually make their way to Afghanistan. Authorities allege the men were to meet up with a ringleader, 34-year-old American Sohiel Omar Kabir, who also is facing terrorism-related charges.

In a 77-page affidavit, which includes references to the group's online video conversations and audio recordings, federal officials say the men planned attacks on military bases overseas.

Digital society from the bottom up - Harvard News Office - Harvard ...

As communications takes an increasingly central role in the postindustrial economy worldwide, the transition to a digital society is threatening those at the bottom ? and could marginalize people of color, a University of Southern California scholar said Tuesday as he opened the three-part fall W.E.B. Du Bois Lecture Series, ?Exclusions and Inequality in Digital Societies: Theories, Evidence, and Strategy.?

Defining the gap simply by access to the Internet ?is the old digital divide,? said Ernest J. Wilson III, the Walter Annenberg Chair in Communication and dean of the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. ?The new digital divide is ownership, control, and content.?

Wilson described a ?scissor effect,? in which minority ownership, control, and content in the media has decreased in lockstep with the growth of media importance. In 2009, he said, African-Americans owned 1 percent of broadcast assets; today, that number has shrunk to 0.7 percent.

?We should care about this because we are citizens and these are matters of the life and death of democracy,? he said. ?There is no democracy without a free press. The free flow of information is essential to a democracy, and with the death of so many newspapers it is not clear that we have a healthy flow? in which issues important to minority classes are responsibly reported, and correspondingly addressed.

Wilson identified unequal access to capital as a primary factor in the new digital divide, but said other considerations needed to be examined: ?Is this a problem of a pipeline, with not enough people in the pipeline? Is it a problem of a glass ceiling? Is it a problem of a club? Is it a problem of mentoring?? he asked the Barker Center audience.

Wilson said the lectures were intended to begin a dialogue, to which end he has started a website. There he has posted four questions ? including how the introduction of new social media and other communication technologies has affected the African-American community, and what their impact has been on African-American engagement with other communities ? as well as responses from authorities such as NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous and Michael Copps of Common Cause. He also encourages responses on Twitter, @Digital_Du_Bois, and he urged feedback from those attending the lectures.

?African-American status in a knowledge society may not be a happy picture in the future. We in this room need to prevent a dystopian future,? he said.

Wilson provided his own five-point response to the question he posed others ? what would W.E.B. Du Bois say about the information revolution?

?Whatever the answer is, it has to be based on sound empirical evidence,? he said. ?It would require rethinking, and perhaps rewriting, perceived conceptual frameworks. Matters of exclusion, oppression, and discrimination, especially by race, must be front and center. All of this must lead to purposeful and progressive action. Finally, we should be aware at all times that we are operating in a global environment.

?The point I want to make is that we?re in a tough place,? Wilson said. ?[But] there are these weird moments in time [when] there is a coincidence of a bunch of scholars working on an issue and a federal, state, or public actor who wants to know about it and in turn there is a political world, instead of political actors, who need that information. We happen to be in one of those moments right now.?

The W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research?s series continues today with ?Policy Responses to Digital Inequality: Beyond Economics? and concludes Thursday with ?Structure, Agency and Culture in Digital Societies: Struggles at Home and Abroad.? Lectures are free and open to the public and begin at 4 p.m. in the Thompson Room of the Barker Center, 12 Quincy St., Cambridge.

?

?Just as a university is responsible for providing its student-athletes with solid instruction and guidance both in the classroom and on the field of play, a robust conference values educational excellence as well as athletic achievement,? said University of Denver Chancellor Robert Coombe. ?Considering its strong academic focus along with the competitive success of its member institutions? sports programs, we could not be more pleased than to find a permanent home in The Summit League.?

?

?The current climate within collegiate athletics has made it imperative that the University find a stable home for the majority of our sport programs,? said DU Vice Chancellor for Athletics, Recreation and Ritchie Center Operations Peg Bradley-Doppes. ?The Summit League is an excellent alliance for our teams, with many institutions within the conference already familiar to residents of the Rocky Mountain region. Our student-athletes will be able to jump in and compete for NCAA post season play right away, which is the goal for all of our athletic programs.?

?

?The extensive document review and the recent site visit verified the close alignment of the University of Denver, academically and athletically, with the member universities of The Summit League. DU has very strong undergraduate, graduate and professional programs and very competitive and accomplished intercollegiate athletics programs,? said South Dakota State University President Dr. David Chicoine, the chair of The Summit League?s President?s Council and a member of the site visit team. ?The discussions the site visit team had with faculty leadership, the Chancellor, the Provost and athletics department leadership affirmed the value DU brings to the League and the value The Summit League can bring to DU.? It is an outstanding opportunity for us and we are pleased to have DU join The Summit League.?

?

?The inclusion of the University of Denver into The Summit League continues the commitment to strengthening our membership academically and athletically,? said Western Illinois Assistant Vice President for Student Services/Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. ?Denver has a rich history of competing at a high level and it will certainly bolster the already impressive national profile of The Summit League.? I know our coaches and student-athletes will welcome the Pioneers and will look forward to competing with them.?

Creativity and Affect | Self Improvement & Personal Growth ... - David

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. Continental Coal commences production from Penumbra mine in South Africa

EBR Staff Writer Published 28 November 2012

South African thermal coal production, development and exploration company Continental Coal has achieved first thermal coal output from its Penumbra Coal Mine in the country.

Underground operations at the mine add to the two other operating thermal coal mines of the company.

Continental CEO Don Turvey said that first coal production from the Penumbra Coal Mine is a significant milestone for the company after 14 months under development.

"Penumbra will soon be making its first export thermal coal sales and generating its first cashflow," Turvey added.

"It is set to be a long-life and low-cost operation which should generate significant and sustainable returns for shareholders."

Hosting reserves of 5.4 million tons and resources of 68.3 million tons, the Penumbra mine is projected to generate 750,000 tons of ROM coal a year over an initial 10 year mine life at nearly $57 a ton.

Coal from the mine will be transported to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal by rail and sold under existing off-take agreements, with export sales scheduled for December 2012.

On Dec. 23, 1954, in Operating Room 2 of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Dr. Murray took the healthy kidney of Ronald Herrick and sutured it into the donor's dying identical twin, Richard. With that 5?-hour operation, Dr. Murray and his team saved a life, sparked an ethical debate that still echoes today, and opened medicine to a new frontier. Moon rocks discovered in Minnesota, but more rocks missing

The Minnesota National Guard said it found some missing Apollo 11 moon?rocks. The discovery in Minnesota now leaves 11 states, including Massachusetts, Texas and Wisconsin, still missing their Apollo 11 moon?rocks.

The Minnesota National Guard said Monday it found a few small fragments of the moon's surface in storage in a state building in St. Paul. They'll be turned over to the state Historical Society on Wednesday.

The moon?rocks came from the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the moon. Some of the rocks, pebbles and dirt they collected have gone missing after U.S. states and territories and 135 countries each got tiny samples encased in plastic. Authentic moon?rocks are considered national treasures and can't legally be sold in the U.S.

Minnesota's moon?rocks disappeared sometime after then-President Richard Nixon gave them to the state, along with a state flag that was carried on the mission.

Joseph Gutheinz, a University of Phoenix instructor and former NASA investigator who leads an effort to find missing moon?rocks, said Minnesota's discovery leaves 11 states, including Massachusetts, Texas and Wisconsin, missing their Apollo 11 moon?rocks.

He said the lunar samples from the first moon landing command high sums on the black market, and some have been stolen or otherwise migrated away from the public domain.

"To a collector, it's invaluable," said Gutheinz, whose students have been looking for Minnesota's moon?rocks since 2002.

He added, "Somebody in the National Guard there decided to do the right thing and rather than walk off with something that had a great value on the black market, said, 'Hey, this doesn't belong to me.' "

The handoff to the Minnesota Historical Society will take place at an event with students at STARBASE Minnesota, a math and science program.

Villegas, Gainey share early lead at Disney

(AP) ? Camilo Villegas stopped getting angry with his golf game and started having more fun. The change of attitude paid off Thursday at Disney, and he can only hope it has come soon enough for him to keep his card.

Villegas ran off three straight birdies late in his round on the Palm Course for a 7-under 65, giving him a share of the early lead with Tommy Gainey in the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, the final PGA Tour event of the year.

Disney is depleted of some of the top players, with only one from the top 50 in the world. Most of the attention ? and tension ? is toward the bottom of the money list.

Villegas is No. 150 on the list, a precarious place to be. Only the top 125 keep their full tour cards for next season, and if the Colombian were to fall out of the top 150, he would have to go to second stage of Q-school to try to get his card.

"Trust me, people remind you, 'Hey, you're 150th on the money list.' And I'm kind of like, 'Life is good. Just keep going.' If you're good at this game, if you're out, you'll be back in. Who knows? Just take it one shot at a time."

Gainey won three weeks ago at Sea Island by closing with a 60, and he's now 17 under in his last two rounds. He also played the Palm, which was 1.7 shots easier than the Magnolia, where the final two rounds are played. Gainey doesn't have much to gain this week, other than an additional year of being exempt. Even if he were to earn $846,000 for winning, it still wouldn't be enough to crack the top 30 and qualify for the Masters.

The group at 67 included Kevin Chappell, who is No. 123 on the money list and in jeopardy of going back to Q-school if three players pass him. Chappell, who played in the final group a year ago and tied for third, overcame an early bogey and was solid the rest of the way on the Palm.

"I feel like if you give me enough opportunities, which I've had, I've got to play well at least one week," Chappell said. "If it's the last week of the year, that's great."

Chappell is well aware of his standing on the money list, though he was doing his best to hit good shots and try to make putts. He changed coaches this year and was making decent progress until getting a six-week break when he failed to get past the first round of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

"I got engrossed with the golf swing, and when I came back to the fall finish, I was playing golf swing. I wasn't playing golf," Chappell said.

The first two days of Disney are a pro-am, and it's common for some players to ask to be paired with friends ? Mike Weir and Dean Wilson, Harris English and Brian Harman. A year ago, the tour put Luke Donald and Webb Simpson in the same group as they battled for the money title.

This year is a little different.

Rod Pampling is at No. 124 on the money list. He was paired with Billy Mayfair, who is at No. 125. Right behind them were Gary Christian and Alexandre Rocha, who are at No. 127 and No. 128 and right in the mix to keep their jobs.

Pampling opened with a 70 and Mayfair a 72. Christian and Rocha each had a 71.

"I was a bit surprised by that," Pampling said with a grin. "We're all grinding. ... You don't need the guys right behind you and next to you. But that's OK. Billy is easy to play with. And it's not going to change anything, anyway."

The biggest change belonged to Villegas.

He won back-to-back events in the FedEx Cup playoffs in 2008, going over $4.4 million in earnings and finishing the year at No. 7 in the world. He has fallen so far that Villegas didn't qualify for any of the majors this year and is No. 214 in the world.

At some point this year, he realized that he played golf for a living and figured it wasn't worth getting overly frustrated about his scores.

"The game comes and kind of bites us, and the last year and a half hasn't been pretty, I can tell you that," he said. "Even though I kept putting in the hours, sometimes it doesn't matter. You put those hours in and if you're not having fun, you're not going to get much out of it. So I've definitely changed a little bit the attitude. And, yes, I've been playing a lot better. ... I've had a great attitude the last few months and I've been really close."

The tough part will be going to the Magnolia course Friday, which didn't yield a score better than 68 among the early starters.
