"By doing that, that keeps you focused, that keeps you anchored, that makes sure you are conducting yourself in a way that you want to," Ryan answered before getting up.

The interview concluded with Salinas' saying that, as a reporter, he's a "straight shooter" and didn't want any "gotcha" questions.

"I've never really done anything like that before. That was interesting," Ryan said, as the shot widened to show aides and Ryan removing his microphone.

Later in the evening on his campaign plane , he laughed with reporters about the interview.

"I really like asparagus. Part of it is how much I like asparagus and how much I don't like cake," he said. "I don't eat cake."

This Interactive Social Skills Series consists of four 1.5 hour segments and is designed to assist individuals with disabilities (ages 16 and up) in moving forward in the areas of familial relationships, social networking and employment opportunities by increasing their social skills.

Areas to be addressed include meeting and greeting, learning body language, dealing with difficult emotions, and using observation techniques for success. The presenters will use instructional techniques, such as social stories, role play, visuals and activities. All segments are interactive and repetitive in nature and all participants will be integral components of every interaction.

There is no cost for this series. Registration is limited and required. Participants are asked to commit to attend all sessions. One family member or caregiver per participant must also attend.

DOT's passenger rights rules have teeth, experts say

Hefty fines levied this week by the Department of Transportation against big travel companies are sending a message that regulations looking out for fliers finally have teeth, industry observers said.

?It?s the start of a new era for passenger protections. I don?t think any DOT in history has ever taken on airline passenger protections like this one has,? said Kate Hanni, founder of FlyersRights.org.

?The rules that have come on board are some of the strongest that we?ve had for passenger rights,? added Anne Banas, executive editor of SmarterTravel.com.

On Tuesday, the DOT fined Royal Jordanian Airlines $70,000; EgyptAir $60,000; and Royal Air Maroc $60,000 after reviewing their websites and finding various violations of U.S. airline passenger protection rules, such as not advertising the entire price of the flight and not disclosing bag fees.

On Monday, the agency fined JetBlue $90,000 for not telling passengers on a delayed flight that they could leave the plane as it sat at the gate with the door open.

The incident happened in March on a flight from New York to San Francisco. Boarding began just after 7 p.m., but the flight could not depart and the doors to the aircraft did not close until almost 10 p.m.

Under the DOT?s year-old airline consumer protection rule, carriers must tell passengers if they are able to leave the plane. The announcements must come 30 minutes after the scheduled departure time and every 30 minutes afterward.?But a DOT investigation found that passengers on the delayed JetBlue flight were never notified.

?In reference to this fine, we?re very happy. I think that it?s a significant enough fine for one flight that the airlines are going to sit up straighter and take notice and be more careful about these incidents,? Hanni said.

?They just think they can get away with it. They think nobody is watching.?

Banas wondered whether anyone on board the plane even knew they were entitled to leave, so she said broadcasting such incidents would serve as a kind of public service to let consumers know what is within their rights.

She also noted the incident happened on an airline usually considered to be one of the most customer friendly and the same one that made news for keeping travelers on board planes for hours during a winter storm in 2007.

Also on Monday, the DOT fined Orbitz $50,000 for not ?clearly and prominently? telling its customers that they may have to pay baggage fees.

DOT?s expanded airline passenger protection rule, which took effect in January, requires carriers and ticket agents to warn travelers who are booking a flight online that additional bag fees may apply. The information must be displayed on the first screen that offers a specific itinerary.

But Orbitz customers may have had to scroll to the bottom of the first webpage to see the disclosure ? a violation of the rule, the DOT said.

Hanni emphasized it?s vitally important that travelers find out these fees up front and in a transparent way.

?We get hundreds of calls from people who get stuck with the bag fees at the airport and for one reason or another can?t pay it? college students often don?t have a credit card or often don?t have any extra cash,? Hanni said.

This isn?t the first time the popular booking site has drawn the government?s ire. Last year, DOT fined Orbitz $60,000 for displaying ads that did not adequately disclose information about additional taxes and fees.

Twitter and Facebook were barely a speck on the horizon in 2008. The Olympics were NBC's eye-opener to the power of social media. Others have their own stories. When Mitt Romney proposed a $10,000 bet to Texas Gov. Rick Perry in a December debate, it was barely noticed at the debate hall, but exploded on Twitter and influenced ABC's decision to emphasize it in debate sum-up, said Marc Burstein, senior executive producer at ABC News in charge of convention coverage.

The challenge for networks comes in harnessing social media for effective use in their coverage.

"I can't say anybody has found the secret sauce yet but there's a lot of great experimenting going on," said Mark Lukasiewicz, producer in charge of NBC's convention coverage. "One of the fantastic things about this is you do get real-time feedback about what you do on the air."

NBC is trying several different approaches, including flashing Twitter messages at the bottom of its TV screen, setting up several hashtags to gather tweets and give both viewers and correspondents a destination to share thoughts, streaming speeches on Facebook and hiring a company to measure the sentiment of online commentary.

ABC, by contrast, is keeping its social media plans quiet in advance.

"You'd be a fool to ignore social media," Burstein said, "and we don't plan to do so."

Current TV is trying a bold new approach, devoting half of its screen to a real-time Twitter feed divided into dozens of categories. Viewers can see what mainstream media figures are tweeting, what politicos attached to Obama or Romney are saying, and even voters in key swing states. The tweets will take up more screen space than pictures from the convention or commentators like Al Gore.

On TV, Current producers choose the Twitter feeds that run on the air. Online, viewers can choose what feeds to follow.

"There's a swirl of conversation going on right now in the country, and TV has never found a way to tap into it," said David Bohrman, who runs Current.

The different online approaches also speak to the spirit of experimentation. NBC is offering an unadorned gavel-to-gavel feed because it is also providing a network summary (except for Wednesday, Sept. 5, when it is pre-empted by a football game) and full nights of coverage anchored by the left-leaning anchor team on MSNBC. CBS is preparing online specials for both directly before and after its television coverage, the latter anchored by Scott Pelley. PBS will have presidential historians on hand for analysis of convention speeches.

The online specials allow CBS a chance to reach an audience that doesn't normally follow the network regularly, said Susan Zirinsky, who is producing the network's coverage.

"It affords us an opportunity on exciting new platforms to spread our original reporting, our seasoned veterans and coverage that can give you a wide perspective," she said. "I think that's way cool."

Lead anchors on the network coverage include Pelley on CBS, Brian Williams on NBC, and Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos on ABC. The Republicans meet next week in Tampa, with the Democrats meeting the following week in Charlotte.

With the dynamic media landscape, the media's long-held role as agenda-setters is changing, too. The convention coverage will be much watched to see who can best take advantage of them and rule a world where tablets, smartphones and laptops are as much a part of many people's big-event experience as flat-screen TVs.

"I have five screens at my desk right now," Lukasiewicz said. "That's kind of where I max out."

Obesity, metabolic factors linked to faster cognitive decline

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? People who are obese and also have high blood pressure and other risk factors called metabolic abnormalities may experience a faster decline in their cognitive skills over time than others, according to a study published in the August 21, 2012, print issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Metabolic abnormality was defined as having two or more of the following risk factors: high blood pressure or taking medication for it; low HDL or "good" cholesterol; high blood sugar or taking diabetes medication; and high triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood) or taking medication to lower cholesterol.

The study involved 6,401 people with an average age 50 at the start of the study. Information on body mass index (BMI) and the risk factors was gathered at the beginning of the study. The participants took tests on memory and other cognitive skills three times over the next 10 years.

A total of 31 percent of the participants had two or more metabolic abnormalities. Nine percent were obese and 38 percent were overweight. Of the 582 obese people, 350, or 60 percent, met the criteria for metabolic abnormality. The metabolically normal obese individuals also experienced more rapid decline.

Over the 10 years of the study, people who were both obese and metabolically abnormal experienced a 22.5 percent faster decline on their cognitive test scores than those who were of normal weight without metabolic abnormalities.

"More research is needed to look at the effects of genetic factors and also to take into account how long people have been obese and how long they have had these metabolic risk factors and also to look at cognitive test scores spanning adulthood to give us a better understanding of the link between obesity and cognitive function, such as thinking, reasoning and memory," said study author Archana Singh-Manoux, PhD, of INSERM, the French research institute in Paris and University College London in England.

Singh-Manoux said the study also provides evidence against the concept of "metabolically healthy obesity" that has suggested that obese people without metabolic risk factors do not show negative cardiac and cognitive results compared to obese people with metabolic risk factors.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Academy of Finland, the Bupa Foundation and the British Medical Research Council.

This year's college freshmen don't.

They never lived in a world where Kurt Cobain was alive or an NFL team played its home games in Los Angeles. The Class of 2016 has no need for radios, watches television everywhere except on actual TV sets and is addicted to "electronic narcotics."

These are among the 75 references on this year's Beloit College Mindset List, a nonscientific compilation is meant to remind teachers that college freshmen, born mostly in 1994, see the world in a much different way.

The students are also accustomed to seeing women in position of leadership. They were born at a time when Madeline Albright was serving as the first female U.S. secretary of state, and women have held the position for most of their lives.

And the old Hollywood stereotype of ditzy blonde women has given way to one of "dumb and dumber males," according to the list.

"In general, there was always the complaint that it was too slow for women to get to positions of responsibility," said Ron Nief, one of the two Beloit College officials who compiles the list. "Now the question is, 'What took so long?'"

The compilation, released Tuesday, has been assembled every year since 1998 by Nief and Tom McBride, officials at the private school in southeastern Wisconsin. Over the years it has evolved into a national phenomenon, a cultural touchstone that entertains even as it makes people wonder where the years have gone.

The lists have begun attracting attention from government agencies, athletic organizations and other groups that want to know how the younger generation thinks. Nief and McBride will be sharing their insights with employees of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., in October.

The new generation gets a lot of its news from Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show." But if they miss an episode, they can always get instant news from YouTube (No. 5 on the list).

Here are some other items to make you feel old: These teens weren't born when "Pulp Fiction" came out. Instead of asking who shot J.R., they wanted to know who shot Montgomery Burns. And to them, "Twilight Zone" is about vampires, not Rod Serling.

But Thorin Blitz, 18, disagreed with that item. He said it's 13-year-old girls who watch "Twilight."

"I've seen quite a few 'Twilight Zone' episodes," said the incoming freshman from Charleston, Ill. "Most of us know what that is."

Similar list items have drawn criticism in previous years. Some teens were insulted by the insinuation that they had no knowledge of events that happened before they were born, as if they had never studied history. So Nief and McBride have softened the tone, replacing "They don't know about..." with "They never experienced..."

The theme of last year's list was how wired the incoming class was. This year's class includes students who might be bitter at the previous generation, Nief said. While their elders went to college in good times and had jobs waiting for them, these students grew up watching their parents worry about unemployment and foreclosures.

That sentiment was captured in item No. 16, which notes unemployment has risen 2 percent in their lifetimes.

But they also live in an era of potential. Gene therapy has always been available, and they don't waste time with outdated technologies like radios and point-and-shoot cameras.

They're also less likely to identify with a specific religion. McBride noted that many church denominations have been losing members, while membership is up at nondenominational churches.

"When I teach Shakespeare or Milton there are a lot of biblical allusions, and I have to explain them all," said McBride, an English professor.

Reuters: Russian church leader rejects criticism over state ties

MOSCOW, Aug 16 (Reuters) - The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, who has called President Vladimir Putin's rule a "miracle of God", defended its close ties with the state on Friday against criticism fuelled by the trial of three members of the Pussy Riot punk band.

In remarks published a day before a court issues its verdict in the trial over the band's protest against the Church's political role on a cathedral altar, Patriarch Kirill said the Church and state were merely bound by a "common agenda".
