We Should Cover Stories Like Newtown With a Press Pool

The sign ?No Media Beyond this Point? is a mark of dysfunction. It?s been popping up in Newtown, Conn., in church parking lots, around Sandy Hook Elementary School, and elsewhere since Friday?s tragic shooting at the school.

I?m a reporter in my bones. I love going places and asking people questions?the trust they show in answering is a privilege. I?m always worrying that I don?t do enough on-the-ground reporting for Slate. I live about 45 minutes from Newtown, and if I hadn?t been in New York on Friday, I?d surely have gotten in my car as soon as I heard the reports of the shooting. But on Friday night, when I got home and saw photos of the ?No Media? signs on Twitter, I felt sick about the idea of joining the hordes of reporters converging on one small city. So I?ve stayed away. I don?t mean to sound sanctimonious or to denigrate the work of the journalists who made the trip. But I do think that the cost of intrusion and the sheer waste of the media stampede that follows tragedies like this one far outweigh the benefits of such a mass presence. We shouldn?t do it this way. We should switch to a press pool.

The White House press corps signs on to pools to cover events when it?s not possible, for reasons of logistics or sensitivity, for a large group to attend. For example, when the president visits wounded soldiers or a foreign leader, only a couple of reporters go along. The print pool person files copy to the newspaper reporters, and the TV person sends pictures and sound by satellite to the TV outlets. The networks also set up TV pools in D.C. to cover events they think are somewhat important but not worth the money to duplicate effort. The point, of course, is to set aside competitive advantage in situations where to insist otherwise is impossible or would cause distress. Everyone relies on the pool reporters; they become the collective?s eyes and ears. I asked a veteran White House reporter if there?s a downside, and he said:

I suppose you could argue that the competition for the scoop gets better stories out there, and then we understand more, and that leads to better policy. But I highly, highly doubt that. The press rumbles into these towns like the 101st (Airborne). You might also argue that the push for scoops is killing the network staffs: the poor people who have to scrape and claw to beat the competition, which means they have to be ever more pushy with people who can't stand one more inch of pushing.

For a story like Newtown, I?d propose say a dozen reporters, not one or two. You?d want enough people to knock on doors and go to coffee shops to find the people who want to talk. They exist, and their voices are crucial and sometimes searing. They are our conduit to understanding and to empathy. They gave us testimonies of loss like Robbie Parker?s tribute to his daughter Emilie, who died, and accounts of harrowing near-misses like Michelle and Curtis Urbinas? about their daughter Lenie, who is alive. I?m still recovering from this pastor?s account of the 6-year-old girl who was the only one to survive in her first-grade classroom. We need to know what happened, only the people of Newtown can tell us, and journalists are there to ask and listen.

But we don?t need reporters blocking the front door to a vigil ceremony, as they did last Friday at the St. Rose of Lima Church, or pouncing on people as they left the service. We don?t need to clog a small city of 27,000 with traffic and satellite trucks. We don?t need to shove 50 microphones in front of the police chief during his news conference or 50 photographers taking the same pictures of Sandy Hook or 50 reporters chasing down the same residents for the same quotes. When the press turns into a pack, when we swarm a story like this, we stress out victims and their neighbors for no good reason, and we make people hate us. Also, we do a disservice to our whole professional purpose.

An anonymous Romenesko reader, who says he has reported for a New York tabloid, floated the press-pool idea earlier this week. He writes:

Putting that many reporters in one small place creates an environment that?s counterproductive to good journalism. No person?whether it?s a victim?s family or neighbor?is going to have an in-depth, insightful conversation when they?re surrounded by a dozen correspondents (no matter how well-intentioned), with microphones shoved in their faces. Imagine if that crowd was thinned to one reporter, who could sit down for a nuanced, sensitive interview.

Yes, that?s it exactly. The mass invasion of the press makes it harder for any journalist to go deep. It warps the story, as the people who have talked to reporters already become wary and jaded and just plain tired.

The Newtown shootings raise the sensitivity bar, of course, because so many of the witnesses were children. I hope every journalist who talked to a small child, especially on camera, got his or her parent?s permission, but in the crush and jostle, the temptation rises to cut those ethical corners.

The press also got key facts surrounding the shooting wrong in the first few days. Worst of all, CNN misidentified the shooter (Adam Lanza), and outlets including Slate tweeted the Facebook page of his brother. The press also misreported that Lanza?s mother was a kindergarten teacher at Sandy Hook (she wasn?t), Principal Dawn Hochsprung buzzed Lanza into the building (he shot his way in, and Hochsprung died lunging to stop him), and that an altercation took place at the school between Lanza and four staff members a day earlier (it didn?t). It?s hard to say how much of this error to attribute to reporters on the ground running with unfounded rumors, mistakes by overwhelmed local law enforcement, or the too-rapid speed of the Internet. But the current rituals of our tribe aren?t working. We need to call off the scoop and come up with a press-pool agreement the powers that be in the profession can put into play when there?s a desperate?and desperately important?tragedy like this one. That much, at least, is in our control.

FG urged to incorporate flooding, natural disasters in budget allocation

By PETER EGWUATU

Federal and State Governments have been urged to consider flooding and other natural disasters in budget allocation and also put in place insurance schemes and other processes that would protect the citizens against human and natural disasters currently prevalent in the country.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Custodian and Allied Insurance Plc, Mr. Wole Oshin, made the call recently at the Delta State?Liaison office in Lagos when his firm donated relief materials to Delta State flood victims.

According to him, nobody expected some of the crises (human or natural causes) being witnessed in the country. He stressed that now that natural disasters have started to happen, governments at both state and federal levels should put in place structures and processes to mitigate the risks.

He noted that? government cannot continue to fund the enormous disaster? that are beginning to happen as a result of climate change or? general recklessness among Nigerians.

In his words, ?Some years ago, we never thought some of the disasters we are seeing in Nigeria could happen. We do not know when it would happen next and when it happens, will we go through this process again of raising fund, donating materials and so on. This is not a sustainable approach.

The more sustainable approach is risk management and in so doing, it is important? and critical for? government to? embrace insurance? such that? a? fixed? sum of money? is set aside? and at the end of the day,? they call on insurance? companies who are experts in this area to pay claims and restore? the people back to where they were prior to the losses?

Speaking on the relief materials (1,000 mattresses) presented to Delta State, Oshin said it was part of Custodian and Allied Insurance? Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to give back to society where they operate.

According to him, ? When this (flood)happened months ago, we thought of how to help communities that were displaced and Delta State came to our mind because of the enormity of? flood in that region.?

Receiving the relief materials on behalf of the Delta State Government, Commission for Information, Mr. Chike Ogeah, said, ?Delta State thanked the company and others who had rendered similar support for their kind gestures. You have come to donate to displaced people. On behalf of Delta State government and the good people of Delta State, we say thank you to Custodian and Allied Insurance Plc.?

Tulane's freshman women's golf class hailed as top rookies in country, Golfstat.com says

Tulane?s freshmen women's golf class made a big impact this fall. Silvia Garces, Madison Opfer and Emily Penttila form a first-year class that has been hailed as the nation?s top freshman class to impact their team according to Golfstat.com.

?I?m very proud of my first recruiting class and their ranking is a testament to their dedication and work ethic last fall,? Tulane head coach Andrew Pratt said in a statement issued by the athletic department. ?They each possess the tools to become outstanding collegiate golfers and I know they will continue to work hard this off-season.?

In four tournaments last fall, the trio combined for a 75.47 scoring average, two top-10 finishes, four top-20 showings and seven rounds of par or better. The group helped Tulane to two top-3 finishes as well.

Garces played in every tournament and completed the fall campaign with a 77.50 scoring average. She turned in her best performance in the season opener with an 18th place effort at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational.

Opfer also played in every tournament and has already proven to be one of the team?s most consistent golfers by shooting 76 or better in 11 of 12 rounds and posting a 74.67 scoring average in her first fall campaign. She produced two rounds of par or better, including a 1-under 71 during the opening round of the Alamo Invitational, and posted her best finish with a 15th-place showing at the Mason Rudolph Invitational.

Penttila led the group with a scoring average of 74.25, a low round 4-under 68 and notched two top-10 finishes in four tournaments, including a third-place effort at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational and a 10th place effort at the Alamo Invitational. She registered five rounds of par or better and her 212 total ranks as the seventh-best 54-hole total in school history.

Mayor on the Roof of Local McDonald's

Story Created: Dec 17, 2012 at 10:02 PM CST

Story Updated: Dec 18, 2012

Mayor Raul Salinas is giving up his bed and a roof over his head, but it's all for a good cause.
The Mayor will spend the next three days on top of a local business.
Mayor Raul Salinas will on the McDonalds roof on McPherson and Del Mar, hoping people will stop buy to drop off toys for those less fortunate.
"I've never forgotten where I come from and the reason I decided to do this for 21 years because we had some very lean Christmas's at my home. There were nine of us and we were poor and it was hard for us when Santa didn't come."
Even Santa Clause came for the special event.
The city teamed up with the fire department, who safely delivered the mayor on top of the roof where he will be staying for the next three days.
"He (the mayor) said we're going to sleep on the roof for a couple of days and raise some toys and gifts for needy folks. It's something we couldn't say no to and we're excited to be a part of that."
People can drop off toys at any McDonald's location in Laredo.
The mayor said this is his 21st year doing this and hopes to do it for many more to come.
"As long as God gives me the health and energy, I'll do it. And it gives you a good feeling to help others."
The business said they will be giving away a free soft drink also to anyone who donates a toy.

Japan seeks a real leader after 7 PMs in 6 years

Shizuo Kambayashi / AP, file

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, fifth from right, of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, poses with nine other leaders of political parties after a debate last month.

By Arata Yamamoto, NBC News

TOKYO - Kazuyoshi Enokido has lost faith in traditional Japanese politics.

"I'm placing my bet on something new because there's no hope with existing parties," the salesman told NBC News as he finished submitting an early ballot ahead of Japan's election, which is scheduled for Sunday.

"Even if it means being a bit more aggressive, I would like to see someone who can pull everyone up and exert his leadership skills," said Enokido, as he stood with his wife and one-year-old child in Tokyo's Ginza District.

Voters in Japan are witnessing one of the most complex and confusing general elections in the country's history. A total of 11 political parties, most of them formed within the past year or two, are vying for parliamentary seats.

Yoshihiko Noda, 55, is Japan's seventh prime minister since 2006. And if polls are accurate, another leadership change looms. Not everyone is happy about that prospect.

"In my honest opinion, I don't know why we have to keep changing our leaders," Hiroma Shindo, 22, told NBC News. "There's no way anyone can produce any results in just two or three years."

Most of the groups vying for power are splinters from the two main parties ? the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and the?Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has held power in Japan for most of the post-war period. Their familiar faces make it that much more difficult for voters to distinguish each individual party's position on key issues.

Citing surveys, Reuters reported Friday that?between 30 percent and nearly 50 percent of voters were undecided with just days to go.

Franck Robichon / EPA

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda waves to voters after an election campaign speech in Tokyo on Thursday.

"I can't decide. It's hard to know exactly what we're voting for," said Hiroko Takahashi, a 51-year-old part-time worker from Machida, a city west of Tokyo, told The Associated Press.

The challenges faced by the country ? the world's third-largest economy and one of the United States' most important allies ? are formidable.

"This time around the voters are concerned about one single simple issue, which can be called 'security'," said Tomohiko Taniguchi, former spokesman for the foreign affairs ministry who now teaches at Tokyo's Keio University.

More Japan coverage from NBC News

Security covers a lot of ground.

"Job and economic security," he said. "Secondly, nuclear security. And thirdly national security. And what is complex is, these three 'securities' are not necessarily compartmentalized. They are mutually interrelated."

More than 20 years after its "miracle economy" bubble burst, Japan seems trapped in a vicious circle of sinking prices and weak demand as sluggish growth forces businesses to slash prices and frugal-minded consumers put off spending.

There does seem to be some agreement among the parties when it comes to the economy, Taniguchi said.

"Economic security is the one that overlaps party boundaries," he added. "There is little difference if you look at the platforms of LDP and DPJ. There is little difference between them and other parties are pushing similar agendas."

None of the parties would disagree that Japan needs to wean itself from its dependence on nuclear power after last year's Fukushima disaster, while at the same time, securing a stable source of power.

"Unlike the past two (lower house) elections, the main points of contention are not so clear and in that sense, it is hard for voters to understand," said Yukio Maeda, a political science professor at the University of Tokyo.

With the exception of the Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party, the majority of the political factions also acknowledge Japan's need to rebuild its diplomatic strength by restoring its alliance with the United States.

Relations deteriorated over the handling of a bilateral agreement to relocate a controversial key U.S. airbase on Okinawa Island, a situation made even more acute because of the contentious territorial dispute with China over a group of islands in the East China Sea.

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

Opinion polls by the Asahi, Yomiuri and Nikkei newspapers on Thursday predicted that the LDP was?on track for a stunning victory in the election, with hawkish former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returning to power. They?forecast that the LDP was headed for a hefty majority in the powerful?lower house of parliament.

Abe abruptly resigned in 2007 for health reasons after leading the country for just a year.

Buddhika Weerasinghe / Getty Images

Shinzo Abe, a former prime minister who is currently leader of Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party, waves to supporters from his car on Thursday.

Reuters reported that the polls suggested the LDP and its smaller ally, the New Komeito party, could even gain the two-thirds majority needed to break through a policy deadlock that has plagued the country since 2007.

If no single party wins the majority in the 480-seat lower house, a coalition government would be formed. With so many fledgling parties, a few, no matter how tiny, may end up wielding considerable clout, getting wooed to join a coalition government.

The new party with the most momentum -- and one that could be part of the coalition government -- is the Japan Restoration Party, led by Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara and Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, who have been pushing for a more assertive Japan capable of flexing its military muscle in territorial disputes with China.

Taniguchi said one thing appears certain: Japanese voters desire "a government that could stay long in power."

At Tokyo's Shimbashi Station on Friday, one retiree agreed with that assessment -- warning that political instability was damaging Japan's international reputation.

"The way our leaders come and go, it's too frequent," said the 66-year-old woman, who only gave her name as Ms. Itoh. "The world will stop paying attention to us."

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Three Piers Down And Three To Go For Brooklyn Bridge Park

It has been a busy few weeks at?Brooklyn Bridge Park. Last week, AN got a preview of the Squibb Pedestrian Bridge, which will be completed before the end of the year, and today, Mayor Bloomberg announced the opening of the new sports fields on Pier 5 and the nearby Picnic Peninsula, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Regina Myer, the President of Brooklyn Bridge Park, told the crowd that they have been advocating for these recreation fields since the mid-1980s, which will now be used for a variety of field sports including soccer, lacrosse, rugby, flag football, and cricket.

This $26 million project spans 5-acres and offers turf fields supported by shock pad and organic infill made of sand and coconut fibers, shade sails on the northern and southern sides of the pier, and lighting for evening games. In addition to field recreation, there will be an area reserved for fishing with bait and preparation tables provided and a 30-foot promenade on the periphery of the field.

While Mayor Bloomberg said that ?Pier 5 is designed to withstand sever weather events,? it didn?t make it through Hurricane Sandy unscathed. According to the press release, the electrical equipment ?sustained significant flood damage during Hurricane Sandy,? and evening play will be postponed until the equipment can be replaced.

The Picnic Peninsula, next to Pier 5, will offer a barbeque area outfitted with picnic tables made from salvaged long-leaf yellow pines, umbrellas, grills (to accommodate more than two dozen grills), a concession area, and a tetherball court.

?Before Mayor Bloomberg, most of Brooklyn?except for Coney Island and Brighton Beach?was closed off from the water,? said Borough President Marty Markowitz. ?I think one of your legacies, frankly, is that we?ve opened up to the waterfront.?

The last three unfinished piers planned for recreation space are wedged in the middle of Brooklyn Bridge Park, and are slated for completion in Fall 2013. The 5-acre Pier 2 will be reserved for basketball, handball, and bocce, in addition to a skating rink and swings. Pier 4 will offer an area for non-motorized boating and an upland park. Pier 3, however, is the only unfunded slice of the park, but the plans for it include a ?reprieve? said Paul Seck, Associate Principal at Michael Van Valkenburgh Landscape Architects, with lawn areas and an esplanade.

Engadget's CES 2013 Preview: Digital Cameras

With CES looming like an electrically charged storm of news and announcements, it's time for us to give you our best bets on what you'll see come January. During the month of December, we'll bring you a series of CES preview posts, forecasting what you can expect when the news deluge begins. For more of what's to come, check out our hub.

Engadget's CES 2013 Preview Digital Cameras

Las Vegas has seen its fair share of digital camera launches, but with the PMA show all but defunct, manufacturers are shifting their focus to overseas events, like Photokina in Cologne, IFA in Berlin and even newcomer CP+ in Yokohama, Japan. That trade show trio helps to keep the international airlines in business, but it doesn't do us much good at CES, when nearly every other consumer electronics category gets a major products boost. That's not to say there won't be any new cameras at all -- PMA does have a small presence at the show, and major players like Canon, Nikon, Samsung and Sony all invest in significant floor space (they'll need some new products to fill their shelves, after all). But announcements are largely spread throughout the year.

Teen fashion blogger branches out with book

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tavi Gevinson has accomplished more in her 16 years than most people double her age.

The style blogger, writer and darling of the fashion set launched a fashion blog from her suburban Chicago home before she turned 12. Two years later it was getting 50,000 hits a day and she was a fixture in the front row of fashion shows in New York, Paris and Tokyo.

Profiles of the young fashionista followed in the New York Times and the New Yorker, along with stories in French Vogue and in teen magazines.

Gevinson has added editor to her credits with the publication of "Rookie Yearbook One," a compilation of articles, photographs and drawings from her Rookie website, which she started about 15 months ago.

"I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to do a print component. Each month on the site is a different theme. I eventually realized that to do a yearly book, and call it a yearbook, would be the best format," she said.

The second book, due next September, is already in the works.

Despite its young audience, the yearbook claims it is not a guide to being a teenager. But with topics ranging from family, friends, relationships, to fashion and school its appeal is obvious.

And Gevinson admits she started the website, which focuses less on fashion and more on teen life, because there wasn't an online magazine for adolescent girls that respected its readers' intelligence.

"I decided to make a website and now a book that didn't talk down to teenagers and had beautiful art, fine articles about TV and all of that."

FROM BEDROOM BLOGGER TO BOOMING BUSINESS

With more than 300 pages, 80 contributors, and articles ranging from "How to Bitchface" to "Breakup Breakdown" and "How to Approach the Person You Like Without Throwing Up," the book navigates teenage angst and a range of other topics and includes photos and graphics.

"Rookie is a place to make the best of the beautiful pain and cringe-worthy awkwardness of being an adolescent girl," is how Gevinson described it.

It has also attracted some star power, namely online interviews with "Mad Men's" Jon Hamm giving advice about love and guys, and wise words from actor Paul Rudd and producer/director Judd Apatow.

When Gevinson started her blog at 11 she saw it as an outlet that helped her get through middle school. She never expected it to mushroom into a website and the business it is today with a huge fan base.

The youngest of three children, Gevinson recently completed a tour to Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Toronto and other cities to promote the book and still manages to keep up with her school work.

Her father, a retired English teacher, oversees the business side of Rookie, and there is a staff of paid adult editors, photographers and designers who work on the website and manage its contributors.

Despite it all, Gevinson seems unfazed by her success and the celebrity status that has come with it.

"I've enjoyed feeling I make something and people understand it, and that there are other people going through the things that I go through," she said. "That to me is the most valuable thing -- being heard by people who understand it."

Less partner abuse, substance abuse and post-partum depression among married women, study finds

Dec. 13, 2012 ? There's new evidence about the benefits of marriage.

Women who are married suffer less partner abuse, substance abuse or post-partum depression around the time of pregnancy than women who are cohabitating or do not have a partner, a new study has found.

Unmarried women who lived with their partners for less than two years were more likely to experience at least one of the three problems. However, these problems became less frequent the longer the couple lived together.

The problems were most common among women who were separated or divorced, especially if the couple parted less than 12 months before their child was born.

Dr. Marcelo Urquia, an epidemiologist at the Centre for Research on Inner City Health at St. Michael's Hospital, said that as more children are being born to unmarried parents, he wanted to delve deeper into the risks and benefits of not just single vs. cohabitating parents but the various kinds of relationships.

The results of his study were published today in the American Journal of Public Health.

"What is new in this study is that for the first time we looked at the duration of unmarried cohabitation and found the shorter the cohabitation, the more likely women were to suffer intimate-partner violence, substance abuse or post-partum depression around the time of conception, pregnancy and delivery," Dr. Urquia said. "We did not see that pattern among married women, who experienced less psychosocial problems regardless of the length of time they lived together with their spouses."

Dr. Urquia said knowing the differences between married and cohabitating partners was important as the number of children born outside marriages rises. Thirty per cent of children in Canada are born to unmarried couples, up from 9 per cent in 1971. In several European countries, births out of wedlock outnumber those to married couples.

Dr. Urquia found about one in 10 married women (10.6 per cent) suffered partner or substance abuse or post-partum depression in his study of data from the 2006-07 Canadian Maternity Experiences Survey, a nationwide sample of 6,421 childbearing women compiled by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

He found 20 per cent of women who were cohabitating but not married suffered from at least one of those three psycho-social conditions. The figure rose to 35 per cent for single women who had never married and to 67 per cent for those who separated or divorced in the year before birth.

Dr. Urquia said it was unclear whether problems such as partner or substance abuse were the cause or result of separations.

'Downton' stars tease 'roller coaster to come'

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The U.S. season three premiere of "Downton Abbey" is just weeks away, and thanks to the some new tidbits from the cast, fans have several fascinating twists and turns to focus on until the upstairs-downstairs drama is back.

Stars Hugh Bonneville (Robert, Earl of Grantham), Elizabeth McGovern (Cora, Countess of Grantham), Joanne Froggatt (Anna), Sophie McShera (Daisy), Jim Carter (Mr. Carson), and Rob James-Collier (Thomas) visited TODAY Wednesday morning and delivered the "Downton" details.

"It kicks off with the discovery that Robert has made a catastrophic financial investment, so we might have to move house," Bonneville explained to TODAY's own "Downton" superfan Savannah Guthrie. ?

"The for-sale sign is going up, and there's an open house on alternate Saturdays," he joked before adding, on a serious note, that "there's a roller coaster to come."

The addition of veteran stage and screen actress Shirley MacLaine in the role of Cora's mother is sure to account for some of those ups and downs.

"She brings a lot of the pizzazz that you would expect from Shirley," McGovern assured. "She doesn't have to do much. It's just there in her. And she also really presents a different culture -- which is America -- coming in to 'Downton Abbey.' We see her knock against Maggie (Smith's Dowager Countess) as the sort of English culture, and interesting things spark from that."

Another spark viewers can look forward to is the continuing romance between Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley, which is headed precisely in the direction it appeared to be last season.

"Well, at the end of season two, we saw that wonderful proposal, and I think we can reveal that a wedding is on the horizon," Bonneville teased.

But beyond that, the cast was determined to remain tight-lipped.

"I can't give anything away really," Carter insisted. "It's terrible. I don't want to be a spoilsport here on the program, but it would ruin it for people if they knew the story. It's more of the same, but bigger and better -- let's put it like that."

See what else the cast had to say, including talk of their adventures in America, in the clip above.

"Downton Abbey" returns to Masterpiece Classic on PBS Jan. 6.

Facebook takes down Pakistan Taliban page

2 hrs.

Facebook removed a page set up?by the Taliban in Pakistan, after a monitoring group reported on its existence as a fresh example of a social media tool being?used for the recruitment of terrorists.

SITE, a non-governmental organization that monitors terrorist propaganda online and how terrorist groups use the Internet, called attention?on Dec. 3?to the Facebook page that belonged to Umar Media TTP, the media arm of the?Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Noted was Umar Media's?October posting?for "online job opportunities" for "video editing, translations, sharing, uploading, downloading and collection of required data."?

Then, in late November, page administrators posted a new item seeking writers, SITE said in its?report. The Facebook?solicitation said, in part:

Dear brothers and sisters 'Pen is mightier than the sowrd [sic]' Now you have a chance to use this mighty weapon.

?'AHYAH-E-KHILAFAT' is an official quarterly magazine of 'TEHREEEK-E-TALIBAN PAKISTAN'.

?Would you like to be a writer for 'AHYAH-E-KHILAFAT'?

"Umar Media's recruitment drive highlights the extent to which Jihadist groups recruit online as well as the professionalism of Jihadist propaganda production houses," SITE said in its report.

The page,?which Facebook took offline in the past few weeks,?has not been the only Taliban-related one on Facebook???there are others, including one supportive of the Afghanistan Taliban and another about Taliban news?(neither of which appear to be very active).

A Facebook spokesperson told NBC News in an email that the social network ? with more than 1 billion users worldwide now ? does have rules that "bar direct statements of hate, attacks on private individuals and groups and the promotion of terrorism."

"We have?a large team of professional investigators both in the U.S. and abroad who enforce these rules," the spokesperson said.?

"Where abusive content is posted and reported, Facebook removes it and disables accounts of those responsible. Whenever we become aware of possible violations of our terms, we will investigate these instances and take action if violations of our statements of rights and responsibilities take place."

Facebook, however, will not comment on specific pages, other than to tell NBC News: "Yes,?we have removed the page."

The?SITE report suggested that the group knew it might not stay visible?on Facebook. "Knowing that their Facebook account may be taken down,?the call for contributors was also posted on a page for the 'Ghaza-E-Hind'?Facebook group." That group?no longer appears to be on the social network, either.

The Pew Research Center's new report about social networking worldwide says that those in Arab countries are more likely than others around the globe?to use sites like Facebook and Twitter to talk politics and religion, finding freedom of expression?flowing more easily online than in real life, although several?Middle Eastern countries having squelched Internet use at various times in recent years.

In more recent months, online propaganda campaigns?even monitored the moment-by-moment actions of war in the Israel-Gaza conflict.

"It's a new method (of propaganda) added onto other methods,"?Charles Ries,?former ambassador to Greece and vice president of the international division of the?RAND Corporation,?told NBC News at that time. "Both?sides combine whatever they do in kinetic fashion with an effort to mobilize international opinion."

Comprehensive Guide to U.S. Junk Bond ETF Investing - Zacks.com

Despite the low rate environment, the bond market is seeing a great deal of popularity as of late. Yet although the broad sector is seeing significant inflows, many investors are zeroing in on the high yield segment instead thanks to their outsized yield and the relatively low default levels that these securities have seen over the past few years.

This combination has made them increasingly popular destinations for yield starved investors who don?t really want a huge upgrade in risk, but are willing to look beyond U.S. Treasury markets as well.

High Yield Bond Market

High yield bond ETFs invest in below investment grade securities (often called junk bonds), which are more volatile than the top rated ones with similar maturities. Investing in high yield bonds is a risky choice as these have a much higher default rates than Treasury bonds (Read: Forget T-Bonds, Invest in These Top Corporate Bond ETFs).

An outsized default rate can result in lower returns overall, although the higher yields do help to compensate for the added risks. Additionally, these bonds are vulnerable to economic downturns and can be hurt by a rising interest rate environment.

Currently, interest rates remain at a subdued level. As the Euro-zone continues to be a mess, U.S. recovery remains spotty and a worse-than-expected slowdown shrouds the emerging economies, the rates are unlikely to go up any time soon (Read: Is The Bear Market For Bond ETFs Finally Here?). Further, default rates would rise but at a modest pace and could remain below the long-term average of about 4%.

However, the current default rates seem to be lower when compared to historical levels for junk-rated securities. But yields in this sector still offer a significant premium over the more highly rated Treasury bonds.

Further, junk bonds tend to be more short-duration focused, suggesting that when rates eventually do rise, these securities are likely to be less impacted than their peers. All these situations call for an ideal condition for high yield bond investing in the short-term (Read: Do You Need A Floating Rate Bond ETF?).

Rather than playing directly on the bond markets, investors can look towards bond ETFs as these often offer up a more diversified and lower risk choice in this uncertain market segment. In addition to greater flexibility in terms of trading and tax liabilities, ETFs provide investors better transparency while the basket approach helps to cut down on risk and volatility when compared to single bond investments.

Here, we look at the domestic high yield bond ETFs, which offer an attractive upside potential and strong returns. Given a low rate environment, strong bond fundamentals and an uncertain economic growth, yield-hungry investors find it difficult to ignore this opportunity to tap meaty dividends (Read: Follow Buffett With These Developed Market Bond ETFs).

Peritus High Yield ETF (HYLD)

Investors seeking capital appreciation in addition to high yields may find AdvisorShares entrant in December 2010, an attractive play in the bond market. This is an actively managed fund with securities that offer the best value and least credit risk to investors in the high yield space.

The fund focuses on the junk corporate market, with the lower effective duration of roughly 3.46 years, higher average yield to maturity of 11.57% and a higher average coupon rate of 9.67% (Read: Are Investors Taking Another Look At Junk Bond ETFs?).

In terms of credit quality, HYLD focuses on low-investment grade bonds (B+ and lower) and holds about 40 securities. With AUM of $177 million, the product has an average bond maturity of five to ten years. It also invests in certain equities, which pay higher dividends or are otherwise consistent with the fund?s investment objective, to a lesser extent.

The ETF is widely diversified across sectors. Healthcare takes the top position in the basket followed by transportation and oil & gas (Read: Could The Small Cap Healthcare ETF Be A Great Pick?).

The product has gained added a few percent in the past year and trades in volume of about 35,000 per day on average. It pays out a high annual dividend yield of about 8.93% per annum.

The 30-day SEC yield is greater at 9.1%. Nevertheless, the fund charges a fee of 1.36% per year, which looks expensive, and has a higher portfolio turnover ratio of 81% on average.

SPDR Barclays Capital High Yield Bond ETF (JNK)

For another option in the high yield bond ETF space, investors have the ultra-popular JNK, initiated in November 2007. With assets of $12.6 billion under its management, the fund tracks the overall performance of the Barclays Capital High Yield Very Liquid Index, which includes fixed-rate, taxable, low rated corporate bonds usually ?BBB? and below. The individual bond has more than $600 million in face value and remaining maturity of at least one year.

The fund is heavily exposed to the industrial sector and holds around 225 bonds in its basket (Read: Three Industrial ETFs Outperforming XLI). The product has a modified adjusted duration of 4.32 years and average yield to maturity of 7.60%.

JNK is one of the most liquid funds as it trades in heavy volume of more than 4.5 million shares a day. The fund delivered decent returns in the trailing one year period while its 30 day SEC yield comes in at 5.7%. It is a low cost choice in the high yield bond space, charging 40 bps in fees per year from investors.

iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond Fund (HYG)

The fund, issued by iShares in April 2007, seeks to match the performance of the iBoxx $ Liquid High Yield Index, before fees and expenses (Read: iShares Debuts Two High Yield Bond ETFs). HYG is the largest bond ETF in the high yield bond space and holds 623 securities with heavy focus on short and intermediate term corporates.

About 70% of the product?s holdings mature in less than 10 years, giving HYG an effective duration of just 4.1 years and yield to maturity of 6.69%. In terms of credit quality, the fund focuses on higher quality non-investment grade bonds, allocating just 15% of the portfolio to bonds rated ?B? or lower. Instead, ?BB? bonds make up nearly 42% of the portfolio while ?B? rated securities comprise the rest. These lower rated bonds reduce the risk of higher defaults. Further, the fund has a solid yield with the average coupon of 5.7% (Read: Top Three High Yield Junk Bond ETFs).

From a sector look, consumer service makes up about 17% of the total, while financials and oil & gas sectors comprise another 12% each of the product. The product has so far attracted assets worth $16.4 billion and is the most popular and most liquid ETF in the bond space.

The fund charges fees of 50 bps from investors per year and trades in heavy volumes of 3.3 million shares, suggesting that it is a very liquid choice in the space.

PowerShares Fundamental High Yield Corporate Bond Portfolio (PHB)

Launched in November 2007, this ETF seeks to replicate the price and yield of the RAFI High Yield Bond Index, holding 220 securities. The fund holds U.S. bonds registered for sale in the U.S. that have at least one year until maturity and focus on B to BBB rated bonds.

The ETF weights securities by a combination of fundamental factors and puts about 13% of the assets in top 10 holdings (Read: Are The Fundamental Bond ETFs Better Fixed Income Picks?). With total assets of $887.3 million, the fund has a low effective duration of 4 years and targets only mid-term corporate bonds.

Consumer discretionary constitutes the top spot in the basket, followed by financials and energy (Read: Play A Consumer Recovery With These Discretionary ETFs). The product yields about 3.9% in 30 Day SEC terms, a reflection of its lower overall effective duration. It also looks cheap as it charges 50 bps from investors in fees per year. However, it is less liquid, which might increase the cost of investing in the form of a higher bid/ask spread.

Market Vectors High-Yield Muni ETF (HYD)

Investors seeking to target an array of municipal bonds from across the country may find Van Eck product an intriguing option. Being the nation?s first ETF to focus on high-yield munis, this ETF tracks the Barclays Capital Municipal Custom High Yield Composite Index and puts 75% in non-investment grade munis while allocating about 25% to Baa/BBB rated securities as well (Read: Looking For Income? Try High Yield Muni ETFs).

Launched in February 2009, the fund has so far attracted around $1 billion in assets and holds 259 securities in the basket. It allocates about 14% securities in top 10 holdings with heavy focus on industrial revenue and healthcare. These two sectors comprise the lion?s share (70%) of the assets in the basket.

Maturity of the munis is tilted towards the longer period giving the fund a greater focus on yield and interest rate risk. As a result, the average modified duration is higher at 10.82 years and yield to maturity is 6.22% (Read: Forget About Low Rates With These Three Bond ETFs).

Further, the product is widely spread out across various states as New York bonds comprise about 8.4% of the fund, while California bonds make up another 7%. Beyond these two, the rest of the top five is rounded out by the states of Illinois (6.9%), Texas (6.9%) and New Jersey (6.1%).

The fund is the low cost choice in the space with an expense ratio of 0.35%. Trading with volumes of about 300,000, the product has seen a solid double digit appreciation in the trailing 12 month period, while its 30 Day SEC yield comes in at roughly 4.5%.

SPDR Nuveen S&P High Yield Municipal Bond ETF (HYMB)

This ETF is the new entrant in the high yield munis bond space with AUM of $196 million. Launched in April 2011, the fund seeks to replicate the price and performance of the S&P Municipal Yield Index, before fees and expenses. Bonds in the fund include municipal bonds issued by the U.S. states and territories or local governments or agencies and should be exempt from federal taxes. (Read: The Forgotten Municipal Bond ETFs)

In terms of credit quality, the fund comprises BBB and lower rated munis bonds having longer maturities. With holdings of 122 securities, the product has yield to maturity of 5.90% and modified adjusted duration of 10.32 years.

It is also widely spread in the U.S., with California and Florida munis comprising 15% and 10%, respectively. The other top three bonds are from New York, Illinois, and Colorado and together these make up nearly 23% of the fund.

The product trades in lower volume and charges 45 bps in fees per year. However, the 30-day SEC yield of 4.0% and tax equivalent yield of 6.2% could make the fund attractive to yield hungry investors, especially if tax rates make these investments even more appealing.

0-5 Year High Yield Corporate Bond Index Fund (HYS)

This is the first ETF that provides exposure to the short-term high yield corporates and was initiated by PIMCO in June 2011 (Read: PIMCO Files For Three More Active Bond ETFs). The fund seeks to match the performance of the BofA Merrill Lynch 0-5 Year US High Yield Constrained Index, holding 217 securities in the basket.

With lower effective duration of 1.7 years and an effective maturity of just 2.9 years, the product is less volatile than the broad maturity high yield counterparts. The fund has total assets of $725 million under its management. It is less liquid, as it exchanges only 70,000 shares per day.

The product has generated average returns for the trailing one year period, in line with many other products in the category (Read: Checking In On The PIMCO Total Return ETF (BOND)). However, its 30-day SEC yield of 4.1% appeals to investors seeking current income, while it represents a reasonably priced choice in the space as it costs 55 basis points a year.

SPDR Barclays Capital Short Term High Yield Bond (SJNK)

Investors looking for short-term exposure to the high yield space may also look at the State Street?s entrant into the space. Launched in March 2012, this ETF seeks to match the price and performance of the Barclays Capital US High Yield 350mn Cash Pay 0-5 Yr 2% Capped Index, before fees and expenses.

With holdings of 275 securities in the basket, the fund consists of corporates having maturity of less than 5 years and has BB and lower rated bonds. This gives a lower average duration of 2.17 years and a 30-day SEC yield is 5.1%.

The fund has so far attracted about $550 million assets and trades in quantities of 230,000 shares per day (Read: Guide to the 25 Most Liquid ETFs). It generated modest returns since inception, while it costs just 40 basis points a year in fees.

Market Vectors Fallen Angel ETF (ANGL)

This innovative fund debuted in April 2012 in the high yield bond space (Read: Van Eck Launches Fallen Angel Bond ETF (ANGL)). It seeks to replicate the performance of the BofA Merrill Lynch US Fallen Angel High Yield Index, holding 65 securities in total. The fund seems to be an interesting choice for investors as it focuses on ?fallen angel? bonds.

These bonds consist of securities that were once investment grade but have fallen from grace and are now trading as junk bonds.Bonds in the underlying index generally consist of BB and B rated corporates, which together make up for 91% of the asset base.

The index is weighted towards industrial bonds with 63% share, with the biggest allocations in this space going to telecom and basic industries (Read: U.S. Telecom ETFs: Opportunities and Threats). Financials and utilities make up for the remaining portion in the fund. It has good yield to maturity of 6.38% with modified duration of 5.48 years.

The ETF pays out a 30 Day SEC yield of about 5.7% while it charges a low expense ratio of 0.40% like many other ETFs in the space. It has delivered modest returns since inceptions, and could be a fresh way to target undervalued and overlooked bonds in the space.

iShares Baa-Ba Rated Corporate Bond Fund (QLTB)

Initiated in April 2012, this fund targets the U.S. corporate high yield bond market with securities of Baa1- Ba3. It seeks to match the performance of the Barclays Capital U.S. Corporate Baa - Ba Capped Index, holding 260 securities in the basket.

Since the fund does not have any limitation to maturity, its average maturity comes in at relatively high 10.03 years. Compared to many other funds in the space, QLTB has lower yield to maturity of 3.2% and higher effective duration of 6.6 years, which raises the interest rate risk.

With AUM of $10.1 million, the product puts more focus on the industrial sector with 67% share followed by financial institutions and utilities (Read: Utility ETFs: Slumping Sector In Rebounding Market). This fund is cheap, charging 30 bps in fees per year, but it has low volume and it has been a bit of an underperformer for most of 2012.

iShares B-Ca Rated Corporate Bond Fund (QLTC)

This fund, launched in April 2012, is similar to QLTB. It comprises B1?Ca rated securities with 126 holdings in total. The securities in the fund generally have maturities of 5-10 years, with average maturity of 4.5 years. With low effective duration of 3.8 years, the product has a relatively low interest rate risk compared to others on the list (See more ETFs in the Zacks ETF Center)

With AUM of about $10 million, the fund tracks the Barclays U.S. Corporate B-Ca Capped Index. It gained a bit since inception and yields a solid 6.4% in 30 Day SEC terms. However, when compared to QLTB, this fund is quite expensive as it charges 55 bps in fees per year.

Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular and effective ways to get results from your online business. The advertising benefits of a good affiliate program are superior to alternatives like contextual networks or banner ads. When you are ready to pick your affiliate program, look at the payment that you will get for giving a referral, how popular the directory is, and how easy it is to navigate.

Affiliate programs differ greatly. The different vendors offer a variety of products and levels of flexibility to the marketer.

Even though affiliate marketing can be an excellent method of making some extra cash, you must have some basic knowledge before you can truly make great money. You should have the goal in mind that your website or blog rank highest when Internet audiences perform a search for content via search engines. You will get more cash and better affiliate links this way.

Keep your ear to the ground to current industry trends so you can stay ahead of the curve. If your clients get the impression that your competitors are more up to date than you are, there?s a good chance they?ll give their business to them instead of you.

An affiliate marketer should be honest about the business he is engaged in. Inform your readers about affiliate programs you promote, especially if you are writing articles, reviews or blog entries that include your affiliate links. When the visitors feel you are not honest about your affiliations to the retailer, they can easily bypass your site and go directly to the merchant to buy the product they want.

Always have confidence in the products that you are promoting. When you make suggestions to customers it will reflect on you. The kinds of products you offer will help or harm your ability to gain the respect and trust of your customers. If you want to keep good customers, you have to promote excellent, fairly priced products.

You can improve the effectiveness of your affiliate marketing program by holding a sweepstakes or contest on your site. You will find this to be a great method of generating repeat visitors and helping those individuals communicate information about the incentive to others if they find it particularly appealing.

Understand that simply reading good tips does nothing for you; rather you should select a few to act on. You will be taking a slight risk by putting your efforts into affiliate marketing programs prior to being compensated. If you keep reading book after book, see this for what it is ? stalling. Put away the books, choose one easy step, give yourself a time limit, and do it.

Although most users react positively or not at all, full disclosure of the fact that you are posting affiliate links is usually required. Being honest will give you an advantage, even with affiliate marketing. When users know that you are doing this they will see you in a better light.

Create an e-book that is very short in length, and place it on various document sharing sites. This will help you show off your knowledge on the topic and also attract those that are searching for information that is similar to content on your website. Always place links that lead straight to your website into the document.

Have a plan in place for your accounting. It is not necessary to have a physical person available as your accountant, you can use any one of the many programs that are designed to do your accounting for you. Having accounting skills lets you see if there?s anything amiss with your payments. Before starting your business, have an accounting plan in place.

Use many different venues to promote your affiliate products. Some customers want to find their products online. Other customers may respond better to brochures and fliers. It is key to see real time statistics. This is because these statistics show you the traffic through your site and the number of sales conversions.

When you are ready to choose prospective affiliates, make sure you already have a good feel of who the target audience will be. This will show consumers you are in tune with their needs and understand them.

Don?t count on just one or two affiliate product companies to provide you with an ongoing source of good products to promote. Have a large variety of vendors and products. A spread out group of affiliates will prevent you from experiencing big losses when you cut out one that is unprofitable. If you?re not promoting as many items as you can handle, find a few more.

Now you know that affiliate marketing can serve you well in promoting your services or products. Following these tips leads you on the road to becoming an expert in affiliate marketing.
