MANCHESTER, England (AP) ? U.S. women's soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo didn't back down Monday from her Twitter outburst against NBC analyst Brandi Chastain, saying the tweets were her way of expressing her opinion about the quality of television announcers.

"It's not about what made me unhappy," Solo said. "It's not about one game. You can take it or leave it, to be honest, so it's my opinion, and I think analysts and commentators should bring energy and excitement and passion for the game, and a lot of knowledge, and I think it's important to help build the game, and I don't think Brandi has that.

"It's just my opinion, and nothing else really matters, to be honest. What matters is tomorrow's game against North Korea, playing at Old Trafford. The team's excited. It's my birthday. I don't really care to answer any other questions about Brandi."

She indeed declined to answer follow-up questions about the matter, including whether she has spoken to Chastain.

Solo railed against Chastain's commentary following the Americans' 3-0 win over Colombia on Saturday, upset over Chastain's criticisms of the team's defensive play. She tweeted that Chastain should "lay off commentating about defending" and goalkeeping "until you get more educated" and "the game has changed from a decade ago."

The outburst led to a meeting with Solo, coach Pia Sundhage and the team captains on Sunday, with the coach expressing concern about how the tweets reflected on the team's image and the need to cut out distractions and focus on the next game. The coach did not tell Solo to stop tweeting.

Solo has never been shy about expressing opinions. Her criticism of then-coach Greg Ryan got her kicked off the 2007 World Cup team. She's also been promoting a memoir that is scheduled for release two days after the Olympics.

Chastain, one of the most accomplished players in U.S. team history, has refused to be drawn into the dispute, saying Monday that she's doing her job as an "honest and objective journalist at the Olympics."

The Solo-Chastain saga has been a diversion from the buildup to a historic match. About 35,000 fans are expected Tuesday, which would be a record for a women's game at the home of Manchester United. The stadium hasn't hosted a women's match since 1989.

"You can see why they talk of all the magic inside. It's pretty amazing," midfielder Megan Rapinoe said after the players spent about 20 minutes taking photos at midfield. "Walking into the changing rooms and seeing all the trophies and legends, it's pretty cool."

The Americans won their first two games and have already clinched a berth in the next round, but they'll want a victory to sustain momentum and get a better draw in the quarterfinals.

A former House Republican lawmaker could siphon votes from Mitt Romney in the battleground state of Virginia and boost President Obama?s chances of winning a second term.

Former five-term Rep. Virgil Goode, who represented southwest Virginia?s 5th District, has a strong chance of making it on the state?s general election ballot. That would set up a potential Ralph Nader-like spoiler scenario circa 2000.

At that time, then-Vice President Al Gore, the Democratic presidential nominee, lost the state of Florida by fewer than 600 votes to former President George W. Bush. Nader, a liberal third-party candidate, won nearly 100,000 votes in the Sunshine State.

A similar scenario could play out in Virginia if Goode?s name appears on the ballot in November, according to a recent poll.

According to a Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey of Virginia voters, Goode would win 9 percent of the vote, with Romney winning 35 percent to Obama?s 49 percent, with a margin of error of 3.9 percent.

Goode discounted the polling firm?s numbers, which showed him taking votes from Romney.

The Democrat, turned Independent, turned Republican, turned Constitution Party member told The Hill that he?s not worried about taking votes from Romney, sharing an anecdote from a recent petition signature gathering event.

?A local Republican committee member from Bedford [Va.] said, ?I want you to know Virgil that I'm not going to vote for you; I'm going to vote for Romney. But I?m going to sign your petition because I know a lot of disgruntled Democrats that won?t vote for Romney under any circumstances. But if you?re on the ballot, they will vote for you ? not all of them but a lot of them,?? Goode said.

But one political insider says that while Goode may win votes from southern Democrats who are not fond of Obama, the Constitution Party candidate will win more votes from Republicans frustrated with Romney.

?Goode is a household name in the 5th district, and could be Romney?s worst nightmare if he qualifies for the ballot,? GOP political operative Ford O?Connell told The Hill.

Should Goode get on the ballot, his name would appear as an ?independent.?

Even though some GOP insiders discount the PPP poll, they do worry that Goode could garner one or two percentage points from Romney. That would be enough, they say, to hand a Virginia victory to Obama.

Despite the high stakes, Goode says that he hasn?t heard from any of his former congressional colleagues to ask him to back down.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told The Hill that he has not reached out to Goode in light of the recent poll, nor have Reps. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) or Randy Forbes (R-Va.).

Forbes said, ?I don't know of any contact made to Virgil on that yet.?

?They're not going to call. They probably wouldn?t want to discuss the issues with me,? Goode said, noting his stance against illegal immigration and recent call for a moratorium on green card admissions to the U.S.

Both positions hold more appeal to hard-line conservatives.

In fact, Goode says that he became a member of the Constitution Party because it was the only party to support Arizona?s controversial immigration law.

Some say that Goode?s former colleagues know better than to ask him to back down because doing so would ?embolden? him.

Goode, who did not endorse Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for president in 2008, lost his 2008 reelection race to former Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello. Before he had a chance to enter the race in 2010, Republicans had already endorsed Rep. Robert Hurt?s bid to win the seat. Hurt defeated Perriello two years ago.

One Old Dominion political official pointed out that the closer it gets to Aug. 24 ? the Virginia deadline for petition to appear on the general election ballot ? the more serious local Republicans may become about approaching Goode.

To date, Goode is on the ballot in 17 states; he hopes to be on the ballot in 30-40 states by Election Day. He told The Hill that his campaign has already turned in 14,000 signatures to the state election board, with a goal of submitting 18,000.

Only 10,000 signatures are required for inclusion on the ballot, but those signatures must be collected from registered voters in Virginia. Goode wants a healthy cushion to allow for invalid signatures from unregistered signers.

According to the Federal Election Commission?s most recent reporting, Goode has less than $60,000 in his campaign coffers. He has spent so much time gathering petition signatures that he hasn?t been able to fundraise, Goode said, noting that his campaign isn?t taking PAC money and won?t accept checks for more than $200.

Goode?s admitted that he?s unlikely to win the popular vote but, he says there?s a ?slim chance? that he could win the Electoral College.

?The big money is behind Obama and Romney, and if you want a fundamental change that would be somewhat of an upheaval in Washington, vote for me,? Goode said.

And if his name makes it on the ballot in Virginia and enough voters check the box beside his name on Election Day, he may just cause an upheaval for team Romney.

After all, O?Connell says, ?for Obama, Virginia is not a must. But for Romney, it is a must have in terms of winning the White House.?

BOSTON (AP) ? Divers have discovered a World War II-era German submarine nearly 70 years after it sank under withering U.S. attack in waters off Nantucket.

The U-550 was found Monday by a privately funded group organized by New Jersey lawyer Joe Mazraani. It was the second trip in two years to the site by the team, some of whom had been searching for the lost U-boat for two decades.

Using side-scan sonar, the seven-man team located the wreck listing to its side in deep water about 70 miles south of Nantucket.

Sonar operator Garry Kozak said he spotted the 252-foot submarine during the second of an exhausting two days of searching. Kozak said the team asked him if they'd found it, then erupted in joy without a word from him.

"They could see it with the grin (on my face) and the look in my eyes," Kozak said.

On April 16, 1944, the U-550 torpedoed the gasoline tanker SS Pan Pennsylvania, which had lagged behind its protective convoy as it set out with 140,000 barrels of gasoline for Great Britain, according to the U.S. Coast Guard website and research by Mazraani.

The U-boat slipped under the doomed tanker to hide. But one of the tanker's three escorts, the USS Joyce, saw it on sonar and severely damaged it by dropping depth charges.

The Germans, forced to surface, manned their deck guns while another escort vessel, the USS Gandy, returned fire and rammed the U-boat. The third escort, the USS Peterson, then hit the U-boat with two more depth charges. The crew abandoned the submarine, but not before setting off explosions to scuttle it. The submarine hadn't been seen again until Monday.

The U-550 is one of several World War II-era German U-boats that have been discovered off the U.S. coast, but it's the only one that sank in that area, Mazraani said. He said it's been tough to find largely because military positioning of the battle was imprecise, and searchers had only a general idea where the submarine was when it sank. Kozak noted that the site is far offshore and has only limited windows of good weather.

The team towed a side-scan sonar vessel in a mow-the-lawn pattern over the search area and found the U-550 after covering 100 square miles of ocean, between the trip this year and last year, Kozak said.

Just the nose of U-boat was visible on sonar on the first pass, but the team was delirious after the second pass, when the sonar image made it obvious they'd found it, Mazraani said. Quick dives to the wreck to beat bad weather confirmed the find with pictures.

The other team members were Steve Gatto, Tom Packer, Brad Sheard, Eric Takakjian and Anthony Tedsechi.

Mazraani is cagey about the vessel's precise location, saying only that it's in deep water. Mazraani's said his best estimate was that the team spent thousands of dollars of its own money on the expedition. He joked that no one on the team, whose members range in age from the mid-20s to mid-50s, stands to make money from the find unless someone writes a book.

Mazraani said the next step is to contact any sailors or their families from the escort vessels, the tanker and the German U-boat to share the news and show the pictures. Another trip to the site is coming, he said, adding the investigation has just started.

"The history behind it all is really what drives us," Mazraani said.

Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center say new research could offer hope for people with advanced prostate cancer.

They are not ready to call it a major breakthrough, but researchers say it is a possible new route for tackling treatment resistant prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in men.

Essentially, nearly all prostate cancers treated with hormone therapy become resistant over a period of months or years and the cancer makes what researchers call an ?unwelcome comeback.? The new data seems to show a way to target the substance that?s causing those cancer cells to grow.

Dr. Stephen Hammes says this is not a major breakthrough.

Dr. Hammes said, ?We?ll, it?s an important starting point for trying to understand how to treat prostate cancer.?

Dr. Stephen Hammes is both a medical doctor and has a Ph.D. in the field of endocrinology. He?s on the hunt for a way to attack those cancer cells that are resistant to hormone therapy.

Dr. Hammes said, ?Hormone therapy where you try to eliminate those hormones that allow prostate cancer cells to grow. And that works for a while but eventually that stops working. And then the cells grow even though there are no hormones around, they figure out a way to do it anyway.?

Dr. Hammes and fellow researcher Aritro Sen have discovered a possible culprit and a way to attack it. A protein in every cell that holds the cell together and allows it to interact with other cells, but when it invades the cell nucleus, it can play havoc with genes and DNA.

Dr. Hammes said, ?It goes into the nucleus of normal cells as well but it?s controlled. It goes in a controlled way. But in cancer, what happens is it happens in an uncontrolled way. So signals that are normally just enough to make cells grow but not out of control, in cancer they go out of control.?
?
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and can be cured with radiation or surgery. The hope is finding a new treatment to target cancers that are more aggressive.

Dr. Hammes said, ?We started looking at this molecule in a frog. And now we found out that it might be important in a cancer cell. And it just shows you how even the smallest project in the laboratory can have some meaning.?

They stress there?s a lot of things about cancer that they don?t understand, so they think they?ve found one small piece and can build on it. Researchers say this is a promising step forward, but don?t expect any new drug available in a clinical setting anytime soon.

For the past three days I have been trying to work myself into a state of exhausted numbness. I'm not sure if this is healthy, but I fear the alternative. If I sit, I think. When I think, I cry. I cry many times throughout the day anyway, and right now idleness feels like a dangerous way to sink into a deep self-pitying depression. I am hurting, and the exhaustion of constant physical activity feels good.

My sister and brother-in-law will be moving in with us in a couple of weeks (for about a year, while they go back to school), and I have been busy turning my basement craft room into a bedroom for them, and turning the main floor guest room into a combination office/guest/craft room. I am taking advantage of this transition to finally unpack some boxes that have been sitting in the basement, untouched, since we moved in three years ago. Kevin was a little dismayed to realize that I didn't intend to simply move boxes from one area of the house to another, but that instead I was embarking on a grief-fueled total re-organization of our house. I have sifted through dozens of boxes of old school notebooks, photographs, craft supplies, papers (oh, the paper!), and random miscellany. I have gathered about a carload's worth of stuff to either sell or donate, and I have collected at least six paper bags worth of paper to be recycled.

Between all of Kevin's business school papers that he decided he no longer needs (after having never looked at them in the five years since graduating), and all of the papers I've saved from my ten years of on-and-off undergraduate work, there was a lot of paper to sift through. One of the funnier moments of the night came when Kevin realized that I had an entire box full of half-used notebooks that I have been saving (and carting around with me from home to home) since my first round of college at UC Davis in the early 2000's. I was raised by a man who saved every scrap of scratch paper, used every pencil until it was an ungraspable nub, and was known to unwrap gifts very slowly in an effort to save the wrapping paper for later re-use. Throwing away notebooks with clean pages feels wrong. So, Kevin and I spent a not insignificant amount of time tonight going through each notebook, tearing out the clean pages, and transferring them to binders. Our efforts were fruitful - we ended up with nine 1-inch binders full of clean notebook paper! That should last us the next ten years at least.

A few noteworthy things I came across during the basement unpacking and organization:

1. Endless note cards, greeting cards, handwritten notes, and little scraps of paper with sweet notes from Kevin and friends and family, that I have saved in the years between high school and the present. 2. Many old journals of mine that are written in such a melodramatic way that I couldn't read most of it without cringing. There was one lovely entry, however, from December of 2003, when we had been dating for four months, in which I wrote about falling in love with Kevin. 3. A few "things to do before I am (enter an age here)" lists. It was satisfying to see that I'd accomplished a number of the items on these lists. There were also items that I no longer have any intention of every accomplishing, and items which are now on my "Before 30" and "Before 35" lists. 4. Many love notes written to Kevin, or from Kevin, from our early dating days, our engagement years, and the early marriage years. I'm so glad I've saved these notes. A particular favorite is a note from Kevin with an Einstein quote that reads, "Exhausted from a silence long/This is to show you clear how strong/The thoughts of you will always sit/Up in my brains little attic," with a funny little drawing of Einstein. The most difficult note to read was a rough draft of my wedding vows to Kevin. Most of it was fine, but when I got to the line, "I promise you summertime baseball games, fall walks, and babies," it felt like I'd had the wind knocked out of me. I've delivered on the first two parts of that vow (many summertime days have been spent rooting for the Giants, A's, and Twins, and there have been lots of fall walks), but the last part - ouch. What a promise.

5. Of course, old photographs dating back to my seventh-grade trip to Washington DC and New York City. A trip where I spent an entire roll of film on headstones in Arlington Cemetery, and during which I got lost in Manhattan and had to be rescued at a Sbarro's by one of the teachers on the trip. Majorly embarrassing, and I think it took a couple of weeks off my mother's life to get that phone call.

6. The worst photograph ever taken of me. It's so bad that I don't have the guts to show it to you on this blog. Some day. Maybe. If you were a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis about four years ago, you might have seen said photograph. Please know that is not what I really look like.

I am so thankful to have a reason to stay busy, though I know that exhaustion and lack of sleep will eventually catch up with me. Also, I am running out of boxes to sort through. Anyone have a basement that needs organizing?

Fruit Tea Smoothie Recipe (with Pure Leaf Tea) ~ Lille Punkin'

I drink lots of iced tea during the summer, but I often don't have time to brew it myself. ?I also like to keep some packaged tea cold and ready to drink in the fridge. ?I don't, however, like tea that tastes too processed or that has compromised genuine flavor for sugar. ?I recently sampled Lipton's Pure Leaf tea; it was the first time trying this new variety. ?I really enjoyed the unsweetened variety, and I was able to use the sweetened varieties in some fun new recipes.

Here is my fave, a version of the fruit smoothie!

FRUIT-TEA SMOOTHIES?
Servings: 4?
Prep Time: 10 minutes?

• 16 ounces Pure Leaf Iced Tea with Lemon or Pure Leaf Unsweetened Iced Tea
• Chilled 2 cups frozen strawberries?
• 1 cup fat free vanilla ice cream?
• 1 tablespoon sugar?

In blender, process all ingredients until smooth. Serve immediately in tall glasses and garnish, if desired, with fresh strawberries.

My store didn't carry the fat-free ice cream, so I used light. ?We also did this recipe with the Lemon sweetened tea. ?It came out deliciously, and the kids could taste the tea, but didn't know exactly what it was. ?They gobbled it up!

The?Curiosity rover, also called the Mars Science Laboratory, was launched in late November 2011, and is expected to land on Mars on the night of Aug. 5 PDT (early Aug. 6 EDT). The $2.5 billion rover will touch down at Gale Crater, and is designed to search for clues that Mars could be now, or in the ancient past, a habitable planet for microbial life.

NASA first set its sights on landing on the Red Planet in the 1970s. The agency achieved its first Mars landing in 1976 with the Viking 1 lander. Since then, the agency has had six spacecraft successfully?touch down on the Martian surface. But with the impending arrival of Curiosity, NASA will showcase the most sophisticated Martian rover yet.

"The Curiosity landing is the hardest NASA robotic mission ever attempted in the history of?exploration of Mars, or any of our robot exploration," John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said in a news briefing Monday (July 16) at the agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Bigger and better

For starters, the way Curiosity will lower itself to the surface of Mars in less than 20 days is unprecedented. The rover will use a new and complex sky crane system to slow its descent.

According to Doug McCuistion, director of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters, Curiosity's landing "could arguably be the most important event ? most significant event ? in the history of planetary exploration." [How Curiosity's Nail-Biting Landing Works (Pictures)]

Previous Mars rovers, such as the twin Spirit and Opportunity rovers (collectively known as the?Mars Exploration Rovers), used airbags to cushion their landing. Spirit and Opportunity arrived at the Red Planet about three weeks apart in January 2004. Each rover weighs about 384 pounds (174 kilograms), but since Curiosity tips the scales at 1 ton, it was deemed too heavy and too large for an airbag-assisted landing.

"The mass of Spirit and Opportunity was just about at the limit for what that airbag design could handle," McCuistion said.

Spirit and Opportunity were designed for three-month missions on Mars, but both far outlived their warranties. After getting stuck in Martian sand and losing contact with Earth, Spirit was officially declared dead in May 2011. Qualcomm axes its own Mirasol production, will only bring some devices to market itself

Talk about flying under the radar. While everyone's focus on Qualcomm's results last week centered on the mobile chip business going gangbusters, the company quietly revealed during its fiscal results call that it's backing out of producing Mirasol displays itself. CEO Paul Jacobs instead wants the company licensing out the butterfly-inspired screens to interested companies and will limit its direct commercialization to "certain" devices. The company isn't explaining why beyond the plan more closely matching "addressable opportunities," although the absence of any widescale launches (and unconfirmed but repeated talk of low yields at The Digital Reader) suggests that factory output never quite reached critical mass. We're hoping that someone picks up the color e-reader torch before too long and delivers more than just the reference model derivatives we've seen to date.
